Police trying to piece together why a gun was stored in a family's couch and how it ended up in a three-year-old's hands.
According to police the boy found the gun in it's hiding place in the couch. When the boy's mother saw her son with the gun she took it from him, removed the clip, and put the gun back in the couch not knowing it was still loaded.
"The three year-old picked up the gun and fired it - there was a round still in the chamber - striking the mother in the knee," St. Paul Police Officer Pete Crum told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.
An ambulance took the 43-year-old woman took Regions Hospital where she's in fair condition. Investigators plan to forward the case to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for possible child endangerment charges.
Officer Crum wants this case to serve as a reminder to other gun owners to always lock the slide back, open the chamber up and feel the chamber with their finger before they assume the gun is unloaded.
She wasn't killed, but she was pretty stupid.
"Anyone stupid enough to hide a gun in the couch with children in the house probably shouldn't be allowed to raise children."
She's beyond stupid. She put it back after the child already found it there.
And you don't read prior comments before making your smart ass comments. I had already been corrected by two members before you commented. I have since acknowledged my mistake.
Some life lessons are more costly than others. Grasshopper - have you learned about the round in the chamber? Now you won't forget will you?
Different households have different gun storage requirements.
"Secure storage" does not have to mean "inaccessible in a crisis."
Exactly. To put the gun in the same spot where the 3-year old just found it, it is obvious that he would pick it up again. If her story is true, education might have helped, both knowing how to check the chamber and knowing to treat all guns as loaded. But that is dwarfed by the basic stupidity displayed.
Oh, my mistake. You DID read the story, I guess. Right...
Couches should be banned.
I'm not dead I've only been shot in the knee!
As far as I'm concerned, no gun is unloaded until I've verified the breech is clear or the pieces are laid out for cleaning.
some semi autos can't fire after removal of a magazine...some can.....
None should be stored in a couch, especially in a home where children have free run of the place.
Patently stupid move on Moms part. She should have won a coveted Darwin award had the tots aim been better.
Isn't too stupid to live a reasonable diagnosis?
Was the kid's name "Stewie", by any chance?
LOL!!
Some people are just morons. I would think the police would notify child services as this woman doesnt seem to have her act together. Hasnt she heard of gun locks? Why on earth would you put a gun in a couch? That seems very odd to me.
Wow! Knee capping by the age of three! This little tyke has a future in "Waste Management Disposal" (wink, wink)
"It is not a clip, it is a MAGAZINE!"\
yes....yes it is. But getting this terminology right is the least of the MSM's problems.
I would say that she will certainly die someday.
