Media shockingly ignorant of Muslims among us
Chicago Sun Times ^ | 3/12/06 | MARK STEYN

Posted on 03/12/2006 10:24:50 AM PST by mathprof

This week's Voldemort Award goes to the New York Times for their account of a curious case of road rage in North Carolina:

"The man charged with nine counts of attempted murder for driving a Jeep through a crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last Friday told the police that he deliberately rented a four-wheel-drive vehicle so he could 'run over things and keep going.' "

The driver in question was Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar.

Whoa, don't jump to conclusions. The Times certainly didn't. As the report continued:

"According to statements taken by the police, Mr. Taheri-azar, 22, an Iranian-born graduate of the university, felt that the United States government had been 'killing his people across the sea' and that his actions reflected 'an eye for an eye.'"

"His people"? And who exactly would that be? Taheri-azar is admirably upfront about his actions. As he told police, he wanted to "avenge the deaths or murders of Muslims around the world."

And yet the M-word appears nowhere in the Times report. Whether intentionally or not, they seem to be channeling the great Sufi theologian and jurist al-Ghazali, who died a millennium ago but whose first rule on the conduct of dhimmis -- non-Muslims in Muslim society -- seem to have been taken on board by the Western media:

The dhimmi is obliged not to mention Allah or His Apostle. . . .

Are they teaching that at Columbia Journalism School yet?

The interesting thing for me is not the NY Times' studied obtuseness--they have become so consumed with hatred of all things that puncture their world that little surprises me there--but that 40 percent of British Muslems want to see sharia (traditional Islamic Law)imposed on Britain.

Sharia is so against what we in the West have treasured since the Greeks that it is difficult to convey to American students--particularly on the left--just what the imposition of sharia would mean to their lives. They don't understand it.

Is it not odd that those who most favor cultural relativism are those who would learn that not all cultures really are equal. I presume that they would learn this as people have their hands cut off, as they witness large numbers of executions (and don't forget: no multiple appeals), as the women among them are forced into veils and as the men among them are required to live modest lives, complete with beards. What would they say when barbers and hairdressers begin to be executed?

Media shockingly ignorant.

They are purposefully ignorant, as you may be implying. They don't want their friends to look bad as it makes it harder to bash Bush and the Republicans if they actually admit we have an enemy and then describe them.

...of course if this guy had been a conservative or Republican the story would have mentioned it a dozen times in the first three or four sentences...

"it makes it harder to bash Bush and the Republicans if they actually admit we have an enemy and then describe them."

Liberals are still totally locked into the 1960s slogan "we have met the enemy, and the enemy is us." They actually do seem to believe that Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson pose a bigger threat to liberal values than Osama Bin Laden and Al Quaeda. I first saw this mentality attending movies near the UW campus 35 years ago. Any character who expressed any traditional idealistic sentiments, any chivalry, any sense that Western civilization embodied authentic values, was greeted with hoots of derision and mockery.

This same contingent is on Free Republic, too. Whenever people dare to speculate on the motivation of the perps in a crime of political nature, they are denounced as stupid by the "brilliant" ones. No speculation (brains) allowed!

For once, liberals are right. They have met each other and they are the enemy. ;)

It is interesting that Rush and Tony Snow have trouble with the M-word too. All during this dustup over the "ports" deal, they never once mentioned that the UAE was a predominately muslum country...and a dictatorship at that.

Speculation of the stability of the UAE governments was never questioned, and it was never put forth just how the UAE government supress and contain the "radicals" within the country....and just long they will be able to supress and contain....

They must be running out headline ideas.

The words "media shockingly ignorant" can precede so many phrases. Talk about a "dog bites man" headline. LOL

bingo.

I saw an anchorette on Fox one time describe the "bulldozer picking through the wreckage". It was a backhoe/front end loader not a bulldozer. Also bulldozers don't "pick" through anything.

Of course you are right but there is more to it than that. Their fight against Falwell and Robertson is a fight against God and Falwell and Robertson just happen to be high profile representatives of God. Same with James Dobson. Religion and morality mitigate against their attempt to impose moral relativism and their Godless "earthly paradise".

They also want to see this administration defeated so that they can regain power. They will pursue that even if it means the defeat of America, which they are trying to replace with another kind of government.
