We heard you loud and clear

According to a Gulf News poll, 64 per cent of readers say the DP World affair "changed their opinion for the worst" about investing in the United States. A number of businessmen told the newspaper yesterday that Arab investors would think about other destinations. The majority agreed that DP World has been forced out of the US port operations due to "racism".

President George W. Bush admitted Congress has sent the "wrong message" to the rest of the world.

We don't feel that DP World lost. It in fact won the respect of the international business community when it won the bid to acquire the British P&O Company. It gained the admiration of the political community when it showed the maturity to bow out with grace.

Nevertheless, the whole affair served as a lesson for other Arab companies who may have thought of investing in what has proved to be a hostile US atmosphere. All the free trade talk proved to be just empty rhetoric. Another irony is that the Democrats, the supporters of globalisation, were the key opponents of the deal. There must have been something else behind the sudden change of heart.

It was definitely not the concern for national security, as they fully know the Bush administration had run a meticulous review of the deal, which established it was not a threat. Was it the "Israeli element" as some have suggested? Maybe. Otherwise, why would some Congress members bombard the

DP World executive, during last week's hearing, with questions about the Arab boycott of Israel? Did they want to force the UAE to end the pan-Arab boycott of Israel in order approve the deal?

These questions need to be investigated. But the fact remains it was an ugly scene in Washington. Other foreign-owned companies run US ports but they were not Arab. That is the message.

And we got it.

Hopefully you are not one of those that have been making money selling out the US insterests at the expense of National security or hiring illigal alens.

I don't make money like that, I am retired Army. I live on a pension. Granted, it's a good pension, but I ain't getting rich anytime soon. I couldn't afford to hire an illegal for anything and frankly I'm the guy on my block that bitch's out the neighborhood Starbucks for having an idiot running the register that apparantly speaks no english. I was not so politely asked to leave by the managerbut he did give me a free $20 giftcard. I went home and called ICE. I expect they will do their usual bang up job and absolutely nothing will be done.

This was every bit as smart of a policy decision as was Smoot-Hawley. The long term consequences might also be the same.

Everybody is ignorant but bots.

The fact is where are Arab nations going to put their money?

With Hamas and PLO?
With France?
With Germany?

I don't think so.

If u are going to place blame...place blame on those in the administration
who PROPOSED this ignornat deal, instead of 70% of Americans who opposed.
The administration wasn't even big enough to cut away the deal themselves,
instead they got Dubai to do it for them. Now that is "ReaL Leadership"

We should keep security of ports where it belongs... with the American mafia! ------ Absolutely --- :-)

But..but... part of the argument was that the new management wouldn't change a thang.

And we should notify the Chinese that their management of US ports will not be tolerated either.

And while we're at it, let's make sure they understand that we don't want to turn over "operative control" of our nation's highways to foreigners either.

It is amazing how some think the USA cannot stand on its own two feet without selling out to foreign interests to buy loyalty and support, especially an Islamic government. IMHO, wrong attitude.

If a country, any country, is going to provide TRUE loyalty to our country, it will not have to be bought, but will come by virtue of what this country stands for, not how much money can be made off of it.

The majority of America does not agree with you.

Is that the same majority of Americans who, up until it suited some, people on this site referred to as "sheep" and "stupid?"

That majority?

Messed up your change, made you wait and can't speak English? You didn't just shoot him on the spot?

Everybody speaks English with a gun in their ear.

The majority of America does not agree with you.

How do you know what the "majority" of America thinks? Are you referring to the same "majority" that Teddy was referring to after the "real majority" re-elected President Bush?

The only reason DP backed out of the deal is that monarchies can not abide criticism. Had they stayed to fight we might have been able to redeem ourselves.
The Democrats have been trying to force Bush into a corner. This was red meat. They win by scrambling our Creigh policy and alienating an important ally. DP has direct responsibility for 70% of our naval fleet in foreign ports.
Educating the public about government run port authority, government port security and customs, and private sector terminal management would have been worthwhile.
Stupidity is the favored tool of demagogues. We are left to wallow in our ignorance.

thats a point I agree on..the rest well UAE, is what it is, and your not going to sell that pig in poke to the average American. This whole deal on our side was done by someone who lives in an alternate universe. The word fool would apply.

Exactly.

Come on now, you cannot expect to deter the true conservative FReeper by using well thought out arguments and call attention to their hypocrisies, do you? And your support of capitalism and the free flow of capital is quite disgusting coming from someone who uses a true conservative web forum.

I've tried the same tact [the exchange that took place in posts #253 & #255 and carried forward in #260 and #262] that you are now using, but apparently it doesn't work here against the true conservatives who disdain markets.
