Oberweis gains on Topinka!
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | 3-12-06 | Kevin McDermott

Topinka 36% Oberweis 25% Gidwitz 19% Brady 11% Martin 1% Undecided 8%

Oberweis closing on Topinka, poll finds SPRINGFIELD BUREAU 03/12/2006

Judy Topinka continues to pose the most serious threat to Gov. Blagojevich, still holding him under 50% support among likely voters, according to a new Post-Dispatch/KMOV-TV poll.

But two weeks out from the GOP primary for governor, Topinka herself faces a growing threat from Jim Oberweis. Oberweis, a wealthy dairy owner, has made substantial gains against her in the past month.

The poll of 800 likely voters was conducted Monday through Wednesday by Research 2000. The poll has a margin of error of 3.5%. The poll found that Topinka continues to lead over four other Republicans going into the March 21 primary, and that she is the only candidate within striking distance of Blagojevich.

"There's no question Blagojevich is vulnerable. He's under 50%, that's the bottom line," said the head of Research 2000. "If Topinka rides out this storm, it could be a very interesting general election."

But the primary may be a rougher storm for Topinka than it previously appeared. In a five-way race, the poll found Topinka is still comfortably ahead of second-place candidate Oberweis, by 36% to 25%. But that lead has shrunk significantly since early February, when a Chicago Tribune poll put Topinka ahead of Oberweis 38% to 17%.

Topinka is campaigning as a fiscal conservative/social moderate, traditionally the most successful combination for Republican candidates in Illinois general elections - though hard-right conservatives such as Oberweis have often found success in GOP primaries.

"It's tighter than it was, which you would expect, given the money that Oberweis...(has) spent," said Kent Redfield, political expert (U of I Springfield).

"She's certainly in a good position, still. If the dynamics don't change dramatically, she's going to win."

Brady needs to drop out, endorse Oberweis and run for the Senate in 08. Right now all he can do is help Judy win.

Aw jeez... I cannot believe that anyone is passing Brady by for Oberweis. What a bloody nightmare. I'm going to give this some thought, but I have to wonder if there's any way Topinka or Oberweis could beat Blagojevich. Sure, he's vulnerable, but both of them are Blago Lite.

You got it. That is the only way she can win. But these turkeys are too dumb to realize that apparently.

You might be right. I'd like to see Jack Ryan try in '08, too.

Those quotations do not make your case. He is correct that imposing one's religion on others is Taliban-like. I don't see that those quotes say anything about the Pro Life movement.

On two occasions recently, Oberweis, who is Catholic, explained that the reason he is not a pro-life candidate is because that would put him in the same camp with the Taliban. He was quoted in last Sunday's Springfield Journal Register as saying, "I think the Taliban is the best example that we've ever had about what is wrong about my trying to impose my religious views on you." On the "Steve Dahl Show" (WCKG-FM) on October 24, Oberweis said, "I think that right now we're getting a very, very strong symbol in the Taliban of what can happen if we try to impose our religious beliefs on others."

The quote was not taken out of context. Oberweis wants these seats way too much and will say anything to get it done. The guy was orbiting GOP HQ last year when Ryan was going down in flames.

At least Topinka is up front about the fact that she's a RINO.

That is not what he said. Nobody's imposing a religion. He said "religious views". As in, I'm pro-life so we should have pro-life laws. As in, he's saying if someone believes something because of their religion, they're just like the Taliban if they try to affect public policy.

Read it again.

And again, since it's apparently tough for you to grasp.

He's saying pro-lifers are equivalent to the Taliban.

Do I need to use smaller words?

Do I agree with her on the social issues. No. But the governor doesn't have that much to do with social issue legislation.

Topinka has said she will continue Blagojevich's pharmacy policy. In other wors, she doesn't believe in the FirSt Amendment and has the power and inclination to screw with it.

Of course, at least she's up front with it. I trust Oberweis as far as I can throw him.

It is almost impossible to escape the conclusion that the Illinois GOP is suicidal. Remember the last primary when the blood was flowing so much that no one could stand. This looks like it will be the same thing.

"Judy Baar is the only one who has the b**** to take on Blago and actually defeat him."

1. I've always figured JBTooPinko had the aforementioned equipment.
2. Does she have the "equipment" to keep what little personal freedom we have left WRT the Second Amendment and to fight the advancing "Daley creep" that wants to suck every firearm out of every hand in Illinois?
3. Where does she stand on the Constitution (both US and SoILL); constructionist or revisionist?

The only definite for me, right now, is Stop Topinka

I guess that puts me in the Obie camp even though I never get called for a poll...

I have to go, but I agree.

I'm going to end some conversations here for now, though, as to make my point about Oberweis I have to point out some of Brady's failings and/or miscues, and I don't want to do that because I really like Bill Brady.

I just think they're both fine candidates for us. Obviously, I see a Brady vote as noble but foolish right now; but the True Believer in me can empathize with the Brady backers. I like Brady, too.

I just wish it wasn't Judy on top of the polls right now.

That's exactly what I'm talking about when I say "up front with it." She makes no secret that she is social liberal.

Don't get me wrong...I don't want her to win, and I will not vote for her in the primary. However, if the choices for the person running Illinois in 2007 are Oberweis, Topinka or Blago, then what we have respectively is a liar, a fascist*, and another fascist who's dumber than a box of rocks on top of it.

*Refers to Topinko's endorsement of the Blago pharmacy policy. The economic definition of fascism is when you own your property, but the government can tell you exactly what to do with it.

Too little, too late. Oberweis has the money, the machine and the name recog and still probably won't beat Topinka.

I get your drift. Please get mine.

If Judy Bore Toooooopinka is the best the GOP can do for a nominee, I will gladly vote for Blago and urge every Republican to do so. The abortionist witch and supporter of exotic flora and fauna at the Chicago Machine's annual fiesta and parade for homos, lesbians, bisexuals, child molesters, multisexuals, transgenders, transsexuals, cross-dressers, dominatrices, dungeonmasters, twelvesome practitioners with or without household pets, has no business being a Republican at all. Send her to the same leftist oblivion occupied by Corinne Wood.

If you worked for this witch, you aren't very choosy about your employers. NO ONE who is "as conservative as they come" would be caught dead working for Judy Bore. As Ann Wegman points out in her commercials, Tooopinka won't pledge to refuse tax hikes. Uh, oh!!!!!!

If Judy Bore wants to have babies slaughtered en masse, wants to support lavender canoodlers, ran the Illinois GOP into the ground as state party chairhag, is the obvious choice of the Demonrat left for governor (therefore WORSE than Blago), what on earth are GOP members doing that is too important to put the witch out to pasture.

This race is not about whether or not the slimy crooks who run the liberal wing of the GOP for the benefit of lapdog jobseekers, contract thieves, abortionists and lifestyle leftists will be able to re-open the spigot of their massive corruption just four years after Lyin' George Ryan fled office but keeping them unemployed will do as a reason to destroy Judy Bore.

Does an allegedly GOP governor have influence in the Illinois GOP? Is that governor capable of buying a designer leftist GOP by hiring whores with local influence? Will Judy Bore be even more of a disgrace than Lyin' Ryan was? Emphatically, YES, YES and YES!!!!

If we are going to have a left-wing governor, let it be Blago, the brand name version while we rebuild Republican backbone here. Brady is certainly NOT going to be the nominee. His voters should vote Oberweiss and destroy Judy Bore. If anyone supporting Gidwitz wants to thwart Judy Bore and have an actual GOP in Illinois, then Oberweiss is the only viable alternative.

I disagree with Oberweiss on his signature immigration issue but recognize that we need Oberweiss against Judy Bore. If Judy Bore were to be nominated and win in November (how utterly unlikely is that???) she will owe her soul and our party to the feminazis and faggots of the Demonrat Party who may well find her preferable to Blago. Not with my vote!

Judy Bore "doesn't pull any punches, says what she means and means what she says"??????????? WHAT???????????? Restore credibility to the governor's office????????? How about enhance criminality in the governor's office???? Did I miss something???? When did Judy Bore blow the whistle on her pal Lyin' Ryan???????

Since you place such great store in her winning two statewide elections as being a desireable quality, do you think we should really guarantee victories by cross-endorsing Dickie "Eddie Haskell" Durbin and Barack Obama, either of whom are probably closer to Republican than is Judy Bore??????

Who gives a flying, ummmm, flying, ummm, fart whether she would live in Springfield?????? That is worth capitalizing????? Maybe it is just as well to have a governor who avoids Springfield and the governmental near occasion of spending and other sins.

I know I am being subtle but do you get MY drift?

you are SO correct

simple fact is that, if Brady and Obie both stay in, Topinka wins.

If they both stay in, maybe I'll pull a RAT ballot and vote for Claypool.
