The fact is you are GLAD Allen is not pro-life and you are doing all you can to water down the definition of what it means to be pro-life.

Are you and KyleM working tagteam on this thread?

Speaking of Leahy. He was vicious and hateful towards Sam Alito.

When the hearings were over I saw Leahy standing there with his camera taking pictures of Sam Alito.

He will eventually sell a book of his pictures of the very people he trashed.

Thanks, Miss Marple, for the advice against fractious debate and the call for unity. Lately there has been a tendency to take a "deductive" approach to rating candidates. Let me explain.

Candidate A says: "I believe we should (whatever issue is under consideration)".

Those opposed to that relative position immediately start the chants of "Not qualified" or "Not Conservative enough" and threaten to sit out the election rather than "compromise their principles". I say chant because they typically repeat (and embellish) their charges at every opportunity. Soon you have a guy with an indelible stain (usually undeserved) fighting this baggage instead of his opponents.

What we should be doing (IMHO) is doing inductive advocacy. Giving positive attributions where deserved with the final candidate meeting the most of our desires.

I started to write a critique of Allen's performance on Meet the Depressed which took a line somewhere between onyx and KyleM (Yes, I saw the same MTP too!). Your call for caution caused me to stop and rethink my criticism. My original assessment was to "damn with faint praise" Allen by referring to the interview as a talk with "Dumb and Dumber". I realize that this is unfair. I see that Allen is getting better at his talking points, but the thing that frustrated me no end was his "Senatorial" approach to debate. You know what I'm referring to - that phony "My esteemed colleague" crap. Too many times he gave away the contest to that dip-Shiite biden by falling on this old habit. One time he did it by giving credit to biden, and then tried to correct himself (Note to Allen: You can't unring a bell, and you can't take it back once said!).

IMO Allen let timmy hang him up on the abortion issue. This will come back to haunt him until he enumerates exactly his position (I believe that this is the sticking point that KyleM was saying). He could have avoided it by being more clear in his expression of his position. He set the premise by saying that "Times have changed since RvW was imposed". He could have easily deflected timmy (when timmy pressed on the "Will you overturn RvW?" by saying (in addition to the constitutionally correct "It's a States Rights issue") by saying "Perhaps it's time to revisit it". Obviously he is trying to straddle some sort of line, so this would be a compromise position of sorts, but at least it would have been more assertive than fumbling for an answer to little lord timmy.

Please understand that, right now, I consider Allen to be my personal front-runner for the presidential nod. My point is that:

1. It's still too early make our final choice
2. It's an evolving contest on very uneven ground.
3. It would be a foolish mistake to damage a good candidate by trashing him prematurely.
4. This rant is not against any particular FReeper, just against what I see as an unfortunate predilection to take assessments or criticisms and project them too far.

Back to lurk-mode ;'}

Those lined up to see the Gore filmaganza probably want to remind themselves why they DID NOT vote for him in 2000 and to be alert NOT to vote for him again...ever.

(I'd be willing to bet a dollar that the Bloodworths...Clinton's Arkansas film producers...made that advertisement/movie.)

Info on the "Other Port Deal" along with a good read on the future of the international shipping industry. Should be required reading for all the foreign divestiture crowd.

Can someone /country stop someone else from selling something to someone else?

There are all sorts of import/export restrictions, as well as customs and excises.

The "66 switches" story is fun. I researched it Friday morning.

Barack Obama just said that "the Democrats have to keep their talking points simple so the American people can understand them".

Hmm....

Matthews on Hillary: "Dukakis in a Dress"

Don't expect to see Chris Matthews and Hillary Clinton dining tête à tête any time soon. On this evening's Hardball, he described her as "Dukakis in a dress."

The comment arose in the course of his interview of House Majority Leader John Boehner. The topic was McCain. Boehner, perhaps with a grain of reluctance, labelled McCain a "good guy." But Boehner cut him short when Matthews floated a scenario in which the GOP would turn to McCain as its candidate "if you see HIllary coming, if it looks like she's got up a head of steam."

Boehner: "Wait a minute. You know, if ifs and buts and were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas. I don't think she can win."

That's when Matthews got off his zinger:

"There are a lot of Democrats around the country who don't think she can win the general. And as a result, there are a lot of Democrats who are wondering 'why would we want to nominate someone who can't win?'"

"You hear it everywhere: 'Dukakis in a dress.' You hear all kinds of lines like that."

Given that Rush constantly warns conservatives of friendly media, he too should have been more sceptical.

Rush now criticizes NBC, including Russert's show and/or his line of attack, but still goes easier on Russert than he should, imho.

FOX Panel

Brit Hume said of the Mempis straw poll, 'you don't have to be a political junkie to pay atttention to this, just a junkie will do. Meaningless say all on the FOXNews panel.

Mira thinks McCain's stunt was pretty clever. "strategic withdrawal" FOX News calls it.

Kristol thinks conservatives are re-thinking their opposition to McCain.

Good Lord, Kristol says Newt Gingrich is "out there" a sharp politician, and shouldn't be discounted. (Now that's some kind of junkie talking!)

Juan thinks McCain is "fascinating". He's attractive to independents, and therefore electable.

Brit says there is not a particle of evidence Condi would run for president.
Brit says Guilani wants to be president and thinks he could be elected. Brit reminds us of Guilani's speech at the RNC convention, how he wowed everyone. A verey interesting candidate, Brit says. Mira says no way to Guiliani. He's pro gay, pro-abortion, been married 3 times, she tells us.

Brit says about McCain...contrary to what Mira said, McCain hasn't mended fences with the party yet.

Kristol says McCain will defeat all comers, regardless of reasons why conservatives don't like him, if voters want someone who will continue to protect us and continue the war on terrorism.

Juan says ( YIKES)...a possibility Gore and/or Edwards could run again.
