BDS [Bush Derangement Syndrome] On the Right (Paleocons, and the like)
To The Point ^ | March 9, 2005 | Dr. Jack Wheeler

Posted on 03/11/2006 4:08:48 PM PST by quidnunc

Ever since George W. Bush won the presidency by preventing Al Gore's hanging-chad attempt to steal it, liberal Democrats have become progressively infected with BDS — Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Here's how I think that the contagion of BDS is now infecting a number of conservative Republicans.

If you're a guy, perhaps you have endured this unpleasant and bewildering experience. You're in a relationship and you and the lady have had some disagreements but nothing major. From your perspective things are pretty ok. Then one day you and she disagree on some minor trivial issue — and suddenly, inexplicably, it escalates as she unloads on you.

It seems like the love of your life has had a personality transplant, you're facing a virago disgorging a torrent of anger, and all you can think is, "Where did this come from?"

If you're a guy, you're nodding your head in understanding. If you're a gal, you're muttering, "Men are so clueless. We give them all these hints for so long that things are bugging us, they never get the message, then when we finally can't take it any more and snap, they're mystified."

I think you get the analogy.

A relationship that suffers this trauma can survive only if both parties calm down afterwards, focus on their mutual interests and commitment, and work together to solve their grievances.

-snip-

But it's another thing entirely when Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, goes around the bend and offers a bill to make all foreign ownership or leasing of any cargo terminal in any US port illegal. Duncan, my buddy whom I've gone quail hunting with, how could he get so nuts?

There are some 3,200 terminals in US ports. 80% of them are foreign owned or leased. Unions and government regulations have made it impossible for US shipping companies to stay in business, making them bit players in the international shipping business. (See this story in the New York Times, US Companies Weighed Anchor on Ports Long Ago.)

Duncan's bill would cause astronomical damage to the US economy, but he doesn't care because he's on a BDS rant.

Your point is well taken. I voted for W in the last election (held my nose) because of the Abomination that is JEffin'K.

The prior two elections, i voted Constitution Party. The CP went wobbly on the WOT (Peroutka especially) and they lost my vote because of it.

You are correct about lower court judicial appointments and about tax rate reductions (esp. after what His Slickness had done - remember the retroactive tax on Social Insecurity?).

However, W has done a number of very unwise things: Pills for Grandma, Farm Bill, Guest Worker proposal, etc. It is actions like these that deserve criticism.

Sweet Jeepers! you are right on! America IS in dire straights and yet you have all these Freepers crying about negativity - wake up folks it's called 'reality'. Before we had to worry about the uninformed, undereducated electorate trying to figure out what or who to vote for, now we realize that so many of these same folks have been elected into positions of power and they have'nt got a clue. Combine this with the continuing, declining education system and the P/C crap and it can only get worse. You get the Constitutionists hollering about rights ect. The founders produced this fantastic document assuming that the recipients would use it intelligently, as a guide and they included in it the ability to ammend for they realized that as the centuries rolled by we might need to adjust it a tad, to keep up with the times. What we do need are leaders and statesmen, not politicians. Leaders who place their nation first and not their frigging party. Leaders who are not afraid to offend, leaders who who will tell the people to get off their ass and go to work, leaders who will remind the people that they can achieve anything they want in this country if they will get off their ass, quit whining and grow up!

Roger wilco.

Howlin, OhioWfan, I'll agree to check fire if you will. We really do need to work on finding how to build a coalition. I'd like one where the conservatives are not treated like the jilted bride at the altar.

I'll offer a committment: I agree to restrict commentary to issues only, if you will reciprocate.

Care to bury the hatchet?

It's time to bury the hatchet.

How nice of you to offer. I'm sitting here wondering if you would have made that same offer if the Admin Moderator hadn't shown up.

:-)

Of course not ;-). I was having too much fun.

Seriously, we both need to examine our methods.

Any increase in Medicare programs like the Prescription Drug Program is and was a mistake that Bush can be faulted for. I would add the Campaign Finance Law, that should have been vetoed, and the imposition of quotas on steel imports which did more harm than good, as examples of other major mistakes in this administration. The overspending by the Federal Government I would place at the feet of Congress. Without the line item veto Presidents are hampered in dealing with out of control spending by Congress.

I only brought out the 'hatchet' to defend myself against the willy nilly swings at me from you.

I always prefer intelligent dialogue, but when confronted with mindless attacks, I will always defend, and counter with what I truly think about the people who continue to attack without substance.

Let's get one thing straight though, when talking about conservatives, you are including me, since my conservative beliefs are unshakable, and long held. As long as you understood that you have been wrong about that, we'll be fine.

(And I haven't drunk Kool-aid since I was forced to drink it at VBS. Crayolas, on the other hand, are fun......... ;)

This other guy was both ignorant and condescending, just like you were being last night, sour.

Take a look at how you handled yourself, and see what you think in the light of day.

Intelligent dialogue, no gratuitous (and ignorant.....i.e. lacking understanding of what I am, and what my beliefs and principles actually are) insults. That's what I expect on this forum from serious freepers (i.e. not trolls or serial disruptors).

Prove to me that EV is right about you. I haven't seen evidence that he is, but I trust him. You..........not even close.

Wow, what a crock of s888...

"Right after 911 he fails to lead congress to a Constitutionally mandated Declaration of War, like the days after Peal Harbor."

Wrong - September 2001 resolution was passed.

"We wait a interminable month and a half to strike back at the enemy in Afghanistan."
Wrong .. we DEFEATED Afghanistan in a month and a half...
our military assets were in motion on Sept 12th, a plan was drawn up in another 2 weeks, operations started in another week (early October), and by mid-November Taliban were defeated ...

"We sit 5 years later and the WTC's haven't been replaced. "

As a symbol, yes, but as office space, life moved on.

In WWII we had all but one of those sunken battleships back in action promptly.

"With war raging in Iraq and Afghanistan, he goes out barnstorming Social Security with the claim that if we don't fix it, it will be broke in 2042. That silly initiative falls flat on its face a ..."

Uh, saving the Federal budget from future metldown is hardly 'silly' but the MOST NECESSARY REFORM we need to make NOW to save America LATER. It's not as if we cant walk and chew gum at the same time.

And so it goes ...

Thanks for making the point of the original article so well .. your fact-challenged rant against our most excellent (yet human and fallible) President shows exactly what is going on. A piling on of media-driven cr*p that blames Bush for all the ills under the sun andgives him no credit for many correct, wise and bold decisions.

Embedded is the usual litany ...

"Iraq is invaded successfully, and the occupation is badly administered" uh ... compared to what?!? So far only 2300 have lost their lives, less than we lost on D-day, in 3 years when we have gone from dictatorship to democratic rule.

... "then the Katrina disaster,"

Yes, blaming Bush for the weather and for the incompetent acts of state and local official is standard-issue BDS behavior!

"The 80% who were against the Dubai ports deal were uninformed and reacting to the blitz of demagoguery unleashed by the MSM and their yapping MSM lapdogs.

The Bush administration was caught flat-footed and didn't react in time to counter it."

About as best a summation as any.
Bush PR is far from on the ball, but too many get so hung up on 'vox populi' poll-driven calculations in demanding Bush 'do something' they forget to ask: "Who's really right?" ... and the answer history will probably give us on this is ...

BUSH WAS ACTUALLY RIGHT ALL ALONG.

That's what history will say on other things as well - the invasion and liberation of Iraq; fixing Social Security; the global War on Terror actions such as Patriot Act (hated by ALCU) and program to intercept terrorist communications without warrants, etc. All these "scandals" over things BUSH IS DOING RIGHT!

And another thing: I hated the Miers nomination too, but anyone who brings up Miers now, right after the successful nomination and confirmation of Alito, is flogging a dead horse. They recovered from that, and to bring it up now is just Bush-hating for the sake of it.

Key words in your post: Arabs, panties, xenophobic, racist.

Thanks for the enlightenment, kiddo. (I've got 24 years on you so you could be my kid.)

Re-read my comment that you quoted. I was referring specifically to posters here at Free Republic fanning the intra-forum flame war by posting this "opinion" piece.
When name-calling appears, the real issue disappears.

"The 80% who were against the Dubai ports deal were uninformed..."

"Many disagree. "

Obviously, or they wouldnt be 80%!

"Just because you claim we're ignorant don't make it so."

True, but to show that this is not just knee-jerk, give us the specific actual evidence, not speculation/fearmongering/'we-cant-trust-Arabs', that a few terminals run by DP World as opposed to P&O would be a risk to national security. eg, examples where DP World management had more lax security than P&O of London. I asked this question repeatedly on the threads discussing it and got no answers ... it's how I concluded the anti-ports sentiment was not based on serious evaluation of reality.

IMHO, the ports deal opposition was riled up by the cartoon controversy. It showed the muslims as ignorant bigots. I thought it was crazy that muslims would cast aspersions on a whole country (Denmark) over something a few individuals did. At least we in the West are far more civilized than that, right?

"Yet look at George Bush. Always unfailingly kind to others, even in the face of terrible slanders, insults and untruths. He has a real operating Christianity. I hope someday to achieve being half the man he is."

Seeing past petty insults and keeping your eye on the prize is the path to greatness indeed.
