Ever since George W. Bush won the presidency by preventing Al Gore's hanging-chad attempt to steal it, liberal Democrats have become progressively infected with BDS Bush Derangement Syndrome.
Here's how I think that the contagion of BDS is now infecting a number of conservative Republicans.
If you're a guy, perhaps you have endured this unpleasant and bewildering experience. You're in a relationship and you and the lady have had some disagreements but nothing major. From your perspective things are pretty ok. Then one day you and she disagree on some minor trivial issue and suddenly, inexplicably, it escalates as she unloads on you.
It seems like the love of your life has had a personality transplant, you're facing a virago disgorging a torrent of anger, and all you can think is, "Where did this come from?"
If you're a guy, you're nodding your head in understanding. If you're a gal, you're muttering, "Men are so clueless. We give them all these hints for so long that things are bugging us, they never get the message, then when we finally can't take it any more and snap, they're mystified."
I think you get the analogy.
A relationship that suffers this trauma can survive only if both parties calm down afterwards, focus on their mutual interests and commitment, and work together to solve their grievances.

But it's another thing entirely when Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, goes around the bend and offers a bill to make all foreign ownership or leasing of any cargo terminal in any US port illegal. Duncan, my buddy whom I've gone quail hunting with, how could he get so nuts?
There are some 3,200 terminals in US ports. 80% of them are foreign owned or leased. Unions and government regulations have made it impossible for US shipping companies to stay in business, making them bit players in the international shipping business. (See this story in the New York Times, US Companies Weighed Anchor on Ports Long Ago.)
Duncan's bill would cause astronomical damage to the US economy, but he doesn't care because he's on a BDS rant.

That's so true. He needs some new staff before any more damage is done.
I'll never forget how angry I was when during the last election, he sided with John Kerry over the Swiftboat vets. That was such a stupid thing to do. It now appears that Mehlman was behind that. I cannot believe that men that are supposed to be so intelligent have such little common sense.
Actually, most wanted Janice R. Brown.
Everyone was thinking "female."
I was pleasantly surprised by Alito's selection. I never thought I'd see 5 Roman Catholics sitting on the bench of SCOTUS. (I am RC).
I like JRB also for SCOTUS, but happy she stayed on our CA court. We needed her here.
"I was pleasantly surprised by Alito's selection. I never thought I'd see 5 Roman Catholics sitting on the bench of SCOTUS. (I am RC)."
But we still can't get 5 to overturn Roe V Wade, its a shame.
Maybe she'll be next, provided we maintain the senate majority and Stevens keeps his word and retires under a GOP president.
Kennedy (Catholic) will have to be persuaded.
Alito was well known as someone on the conservatives' shortlist. He was a logical choice when the president decided to please his base.
Bush showed leadership by listening to his base and correcting a bad decision before it was too late. He's human, he made a mistake, and then made it right.
That's how true leadership works.
I would like to see it, knowing that GWB will also choose her replacement. It would be a win win situation.
Have a good night.
Me too. You're right -- a WIN, WIN.
You too!

It works if you reply to post 11. It worked for me.
I thought you didn't belong to a party.
Leaders are supposed to lead, not follow polls.
The poll just demonstrated that 83% of the people in this country don't want to be bothered by the facts, even if none exist.
That's all Dirty Harry does. He offers NO alternatives of his own.
Another caller got the same question from Rush and hung up.
Then what pray tell was the 45-day review for? Everyone found common ground over that issue. It wasn't until facts started seeping to the surface, Congress flinched and killed the deal.
If my synopsis is generally accurate, then the WH staff needs to resign now.
By complying with the law?
If you think Congress is just going to "drop the issue", you're not paying much attention. Congress' actions on Thursday laid out the template for future foreign investments in this country. If they only scrutinize Arab countries, and 83% of the public gets their panties in a twist, it will be seen as being xenophobic. If they allow China or Pakistan or India or Great Britain to do business here without scrutinization or 83% of the public is ok with it, then it will be seen as being racist toward Arabs.
