The appeals court said the banner was protected speech because it did not disrupt school activity and was displayed off school grounds during a non-curricular activity. I'm surprised the Ninth Circus didn't rule that the reference to bonghits was free speech, but not the part about Jesus.

Anything that degrades Christianity, as that banner did, is just fine with the enemies of Christ.

I'd like to see the Ninth Circus' ruling on the following free speech banners in or around government schools:
"Abortion is infancide."
"Homosexuality is perversion."
"The Second Amendment protects our right to keep and bear arms."
"Support our troops"
"Overthrow the National Education Association"

The court was right. It's none of the school's business what it's students do off school property on their own time.

Suggesting kids should smoke illegal things seems to be a violation of the student's right to a crime free school zone.

Freedom of speech is just that. I agree with the judge.
The rule doesn't say "freedom FROM speech". The high school principal was way out of line.

I once knew a guy who had a shirt that said "bong hits...they're not just for breakfast anymore". Very cute.
I hear that George Washington rolled a mean joint.

I'm surprised they didn't too.
But if he was off of school grounds and not part of an extracurricular event, I think I have to agree with the court.
The pothead was within his rights.
Now if he gets caught taking bong hits, or possession of bong, then that's an entirely different matter.

Principal Deborah Morse seized the banner and suspended the 18-year-old for 10 days The fact that it was a woman doesn't surprise me. As a mother of two boys, I've had more trouble with female principals.

The appeals court said the banner was protected speech because it did not disrupt school activity and was displayed off school grounds during a non-curricular activity. I confess I'm snickering as I write this, but this is another crazy ruling in an increasing long line of irrational decisions by our courts. Unfurling a banner that reads "Bong Hits for Jesus" across the street from a school is free speech?!
"Public schools are instrumentalities of government, and government is not entitled to suppress speech that undermines whatever missions it defines for itself."
Maybe another reason to rethink the whole government education thing.

If it had said Bush for President it would have been banned.

Apparently, the only way a student can get away with mentioning Jesus is if he or she is promoting drug use. Here's guessing the decision would have been different if the sign said, "Worship Jesus."
