From the Denver Post:

Controversial teacher keeps job

By DenverPost.com
DenverPost.com

A Cherry Creek social studies teacher will not lose his job, after a student went public with a tape recording of controversial comments the teacher had made in class.

Superintendent Monte C. Moses said Jay Bennish will be reinstated to his job at Overland High School, and will be teaching on Monday.

Moses said Bennish doesn't deserve to be praised, nor does he deserve to be fired. Moses said Bennish is a good teacher whose teaching abilities need "refinement.

The announcement came after Bennish's attorney, David Lane, promised to sue the school district if Bennish was fired.

At a meeting Thursday, Bennish told Cherry Creek school leaders that he should have used a different dictator when comparing President Bush to Adolf Hitler in a geography class.

Bennish also told district officials that he should have balanced each lecture "contemporaneously" on controversial issues rather than over the course of the term, according to Lane.

Bennish was placed on paid administrative leave last week while officials probed allegations that he was biased after sophomore Sean Allen went public with a recording he made of a Feb. 1 geography lecture.

Bennish had cited "eerie similarities" between Bush's State of the Union address and "things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

Today in Washington, President Bush was asked about the Bennish controversy.

"I think people should be allowed to criticize me all they want. And they do," he said.

Denver Post reporters Jennifer Brown, Allison Sherry and Annette Espinoza contributed to this report.

"Could you imagine what will happen now to the whistle blowing student?"

Yup. But when it does, the young man will have his college education paid for by Mr. Bennish and the Overland School District.

Bet on it.

I listened to much of the recording. Even if it wasn't so over the top and one-sided, I would pull my kid out of the school because they hired such an idiot to teach children.

Seriously, he has such absolutely pinheaded, illogical, and ill-informed opinions on the world.

He sounded like a parrot who spent thirty years in a poli-sci lecture hall. A bunch of canned phrases, complete misuse of terms and nothing approaching any coherent logic or point.

"Capitalism kills! Hello! Give us a kiss! America is a terrorist state! Hello! Europeans don't like us! Kyoto! Hello!"

I've heard Sean Allen say he's changing schools.

Bennish doesn't seem to be in the union, for some reason. The local union representative noted that they wouldn't be representing him for that reason. (And they seemed rather happy to not be involved in a firestorm, for once.)

"I was aching to be in his class when I heard the tape. I'm 16...it would have been so easy to defeat his pathetic rhetoric."

Easy to defeat perhaps, but difficult to get a grade higher than a D if you don't tow his line..I learned the hard way back when I was in college and had a WAY left leaning history prof..when I disputed what she was saying, I left that class with a D..(my test scores were in the B range..she brought it down because of a "lack of classroom participation"...

The minced words of an education bureaucrat. No wonder our kids are messed up.

He also said "a lot of years ago" when referencing how long ago he was taught geography.

Outrageous.....but not suprising. I'm sure 95% of the faculty hold similar leftist views.

Exactly.

Awww. Don't listen to GD ; ) I was aching to be in that class too...

and was in one somewhat similar. Teach called me "Lil' Miss Sunshine", cause he knew what I thought of hisselftheelf. He didn't DARE give me less than what I deserved. And I got an A.

GD's got a point though, it can be very tricky with some teachers, some are just outright vicious.

>>>I'm 16...it would have been so easy to defeat his pathetic rhetoric.<<

You'll have plenty of chances in the next few years to bounce your conservative ideals off of a bunch of dolt liberals; there is no shortage of them - unfortunately!

Keep your passion up - we need every "right thinking" teenager we can get for the future battles for the soul of this great country.

Ugh. And now David Lane is spinning things. Smuck.

Bennish: "I'm excited to be back in the classroom." He also babbled something about "social justice", but then went back on script and simply said he's excited to be in classroom.

I guess Bennish doesn't believe Bush was elected, still suffering from that weird democrat syndrome I forgot what they call it.
