Goodbye, Dubai (Protectionists Rejoice)
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 10, 2006 | The Editors

Posted on 03/10/2006 10:28:49 AM PST by RWR8189

PROTECTIONISTS, REJOICE! The dastardly United Arab Emirates company that would have presumed to unload containers of underwear and toothpaste on U.S. soil has backed down, and it will now divest its U.S. port interests to an American entity. Rest assured, the nation is now safe from dangerous Middle Eastern accountants and port logistics specialists.

Dubai Ports World did what was necessary, if not necessarily fair, on Thursday by agreeing to give up the U.S. operations of its newly acquired British ports company. The House Appropriations Committee had voted 62 to 2 on Wednesday to block the deal; a similar bill was pending in the Senate.

Although President Bush rightly stood by the acquisition and vowed to veto any bill that stood in its way, he was fighting a losing battle that only deepened a growing rift in the Republican Party. Dubai Ports World officials wisely recognized that they had to put some distance between themselves and their new U.S. assets. The company probably will sell its U.S. assets or create a U.S. company with a separate board to run them.

Much as we wish it would go away, the fight may not be over yet.

For one, the terms of the divestiture remain unclear, and some members of Congress are demanding more details. Will it be enough for Dubai Ports World to create a U.S. subsidiary? Will it have to open headquarters in the United States? Pay its employees in dollars?

Neither political party is homogenous. There are embarassing elements in both camps.

That said, this episode worries me too. Insulting a friend is bad strategery. This country supports our war effort and troops directly.

Let me put it this way -- I consider the UAE more of an ally than France.

When the UAE welcomes Jews and disavows Hamas, I'll listen.

There are people around the world who hate all Americans.

Hate is a big business and it is usually promoted by people who do so for reasons of acquisition of power.

So now you are comparing Arabs to animals.

I'll be quite happy to kiss Paula Abdul, except that my wife might object.

I've always been a borderline R, since I'm one of those folks who doesn't think the Rs are conservatives -- defined as folks who oppose govt control of private business.

Agreed, the D's are not a choice.

One year, I wrote in my father-in-law. Next election I might do the same.

This is close to the last straw with the Rs, for me.

It's probably the latter. Sadly.

It's worked for Jesse Jackson, Pat Buchanan, David Duke, Michael Moore -- not to mention Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Robert Mugabe, Saddam Hussein, Ayatollah Khomeini et al.

It works for acquiring power in basket-case nations, but the only people who cash in here are fringe lunatics who collect donations from bitter losers and shake down guilty institutions. It doesn't win elections.

So you are not afraid of Muslims? Is that why you didn't want them to own the terminals? Just curious.

Oh by the way? What about answering that little question...or is the answer not the one you want to give?

When the UAE welcomes Jews and disavows Hamas, I'll listen.

So the fact that the UAE, and DPW in particular, are apperently innocent of ever being a danger to you is not in any way important to you?

I'm against the folks that want to kill me. And I am allies with the folks who oppose those terrorists.

You are against all muslims, good or bad.

Being afraid of folks who are on your side . . . do you consider that rational?

Actually, it's convicting innocent arab muslims like DPW of being terrorists because of the actions of a few muslims is 'bigoted'.

Yes, a conviction should have a much higher standard of proof. Good thing most people here are only expressing an opinion.

BTW, it was the poster I was responding to who made the charge.

Hamas is a terrorist organization and the Palestinians are a wrecked people. That's what happens when any people put their fate in the hands of the United Nations.

However, the Palestinians and Syria and Iraq under Saddam and Eqypt under Nasser were NOT fanatical Muslim states, but artificial countries created by the British Foreign Office that were wrecked by aggressive secular dictatorships.

Iran, of course, is different -- but that is not an Arab state.

Is that why you didn't want them to own the terminals?
No, I don't trust them.

Israeli shipper endorses DP World

The chairman of Israel's largest shipping firm has strongly backed a deal that would give a United Arab Emirates-based shipping company control of several U.S. port terminals, while another GOP leader expressed strong opposition.

"little green apples?"

hahaha!

Have you heard the song that goes..."God don't make little green apples and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summer time"?

Well ..it's raining buckets here right now and I just thought I would throw it in for more surrealism...

I know..it was bad..:)

I never said I was afraid of them. I have no reason to be afraid of them. However, I do not want a country who supports Hamas and opposes Israel running anything in my country. Just my opinion, of course.
