PROTECTIONISTS, REJOICE! The dastardly United Arab Emirates company that would have presumed to unload containers of underwear and toothpaste on U.S. soil has backed down, and it will now divest its U.S. port interests to an American entity. Rest assured, the nation is now safe from dangerous Middle Eastern accountants and port logistics specialists.
Dubai Ports World did what was necessary, if not necessarily fair, on Thursday by agreeing to give up the U.S. operations of its newly acquired British ports company. The House Appropriations Committee had voted 62 to 2 on Wednesday to block the deal; a similar bill was pending in the Senate.
Although President Bush rightly stood by the acquisition and vowed to veto any bill that stood in its way, he was fighting a losing battle that only deepened a growing rift in the Republican Party. Dubai Ports World officials wisely recognized that they had to put some distance between themselves and their new U.S. assets. The company probably will sell its U.S. assets or create a U.S. company with a separate board to run them.
Much as we wish it would go away, the fight may not be over yet.
For one, the terms of the divestiture remain unclear, and some members of Congress are demanding more details. Will it be enough for Dubai Ports World to create a U.S. subsidiary? Will it have to open headquarters in the United States? Pay its employees in dollars?

Which "innocent" ones would that be? I rather be a live bigot than a dead infidel.
Where do you see a fallacy? If "protected enterprises" do exist, then the only question is the list of them. Or do you deny their very existence?
The only protectionists are the UAE government, which according to its own website, does not allow foreigners to own a business in their country (outside the very small free trade zone) unless IT IS 51-PERCENT OWNED BY AN UAE NATIONAL.
Google the UAE govt and do your own research if you don't believe me.
The UAE's official website requires one to register, and I dont feel like it.
I saw a representative today on CNBC confirm the 51-percent ownership, and that peaked my interest, so I checked it out and found that it is the UAE which is the TRUE PROTECTIONIST.
These people don't believe there is such a thing as an innocent Muslim. Nineteen Muslims on board four airplanes are enough evidence to convict 1.2 BILLION Muslims of Guilt by Association, apparently. That's what passes for Justice in the American Court of Public Opinion these days.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Muhammed Ali are just as guilty of mass murder as Muhammed Atta by this logic.
Bigotry is a poor substitute for thinking.
Well, so far, the evidence suggests that the UAE company DPW is innocent of being a danger to you . . . yet you chose not to trust them.
Do you really feel that it's either be a bigot or die?
I'm actually aware of another option . . . one a bit more "rational".
Because they are dogs, or behave that way(for they lilly livered pissants amoung us).
It's them or us, baby, face it, only one leader of the pack.
Oh, of course, we don't think or feel that way, but as long as there's more of them, that's how the game will go.
...but ....but "Mr. President"..I'm just reacting to my fears like all the rest...I know you are busy but please stop diverting the question...are you going to kill them all before they come and get us?
"Goodbye Dubai, Protectionists Rejoice"
I'd like my daughter to not ever have to explain to her child, as I had to explain to her a few years ago, why we couldn't go up in the Sears tower. I would like to be safe from a cult of dangerous, death-worshipping savages.
Apologists for weakness in this country called Reagan an "amiable dunce" and now call George W. Bush a "chimp"--and those of us who voted for him, but remain baffled by his notions of 'national security' at home, are being smeared . . . by fellow conservatives as . . . "idiots". (See tag-line)
I think those who agree with me have been very patient with you. You'd better stop and re-build all your ruins, peace and love can win the day . . despite all your losing.

& thinking your enemy thinks the way you do is a good way to get eliminated from the gene pool.
That's what he replied, in fact.
It makes me worry -- one of the common 'knocks' against the R party has always been the claim that there is a heavy dose of bigotry in the R's.
Not being one myself, I've always denied that. But this entire thing has made me reconsider who and what the R party is . . .
Jews constitute no more than 10 percent of the world's Semites. The overwhelming majority of Semites are Arabs. Supporters of the UAE are therefore pro-Semite.
I just call 'em bigots. Puts them on the same level as UAE, then I guess. Bigots not doing business with bigots. Makes perfect sense.
So if you dont want to do business with a bigot, youre a bigot? A bigot against bigots.
Have you considered asking your congeressman to introduce anti-bigotry against bigotry legislation. Bigots have for too long been treated unfairly those bigoted against bigoted views.
You set up a straw man by replacing entities legally owned by foreign companies with ones that are not legally owned by foreign companies then argued for a different premise (foreign ownership may be denied).
Yes it is. There are people around the world who hate all Americans. Those Americans who hate indiscriminately in return are a perfect example of your point.
Actually, blaming everyone in a group for the actions of a few is a good way to drive away rational allies and end up alone, and then get eliminated from the gene pool.
Either they are skulking in their chamber corners giving thanks that it's Friday, or they have gathered at the local mens club to engage in mutual misguided affirmation.
Actually, it's convicting innocent arab muslims like DPW of being terrorists because of the actions of a few muslims is 'bigoted'.
Kinda like that kid who went to film the bears, eh?
"Have you considered asking your congeressman to introduce anti-bigotry against bigotry legislation."
Well, I'm a bit bigoted against my congressman. I'm also a bit bigoted against anti-bigot legislation. I know that makes me seem like a bigot but while I don't agree with bigots, I will fight till near fatigue to protect other people's right to be bigoted.
