Girl's Text Terror a Big Lie:Cops
New York Post ^ | March 10, 2006 | Cynthia R. Fagen

Frightening text messages sent by a 13-year-old New Jersey girl who claimed she was kidnapped and being held captive were probably a cruel hoax, cops said yesterday.

Natasha Browne - who sent the messages to her terrified mother in Jersey City - turned up unharmed on a Brooklyn street at around 1 a.m.

Initially, Natasha told NYPD detectives a harrowing tale of being abducted on her way to school on Monday, held in a "pitch black" basement and later whisked to New York where two men raped her.

But that story began to unravel quickly.

"If it turns out to be a total hoax, quite frankly, I feel sorry for her and her parents," said Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy.

On Monday Natasha's distraught mom received a series of messages, presumably typed by the girl. One read: "Please help mom. He's making me do disgusting stuff."

"The credibility of what happened here is in doubt, but we'll give her every benefit of the doubt to make sure that if anything happened, she'll get the help she needs."

Portions of Monday's five messages presumably typed by Browne to her distraught mother, Stella read: "Help I'm scared. I don't know where I am.

Investigators said the girl met a man about three or four weeks ago at a Jersey City shopping mall and agreed to stay in touch with him by text messaging.

If she's black, Al Sharpton will rush to her aid, even if the story is a complete fabrication.

What is going to happen to her? Is she going to get a book deal of a life time?

If my daughter pulled something like that two things would happen:

1) Give her a huge hug and kiss because she's okay.

2) Beat the living daylights out of her.

She was also sending innocuous messages back and forth to her other friends. Hoax.

I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. The horror the mother had to be experiencing during this ordeal must have been intense.

I think she is, based on her mother's name in an earlier thread. One of those Anesha or Shanequa or Latika kind of names, you know the pattern. You never read about one of those names that is getting a good-citizenship award.

She appeared, at least in part, Asian when this story first broke and they were showing her picture. As if a kidnapper is going to let you keep your phone....sheesh!

Well, when I first heard the story on the radio, I was very suspicious because to leak the messages would have given the abductors knowledge about the girl's access to her phone.
If the story was true, they just gave away her only chance of being found.

What!! Stella is such a pretty name! It means Star in Latin.

You're probably too young to remember Stella Dallas on the radio. (I am too.)

A lot of us thought this was probably BS. My guess was that the girl was a runaway...at any rate, those text messages sounded like lies from the outset. Conveniently saying she didn't know what happened and just woke up in a basement was pretty bogus-sounding.
