HOURS after boarding the luxury cruise that would result in her death, Dianne Brimble's friend warned her of a group of men who had been ogling female passengers, a Sydney inquest was told today. The next morning, Ms Brimble, 42, was found dead in a cabin belonging to some of those same men.
Police allege she had been given a lethal dose of the date rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate before being sexually assaulted.
The inquest was told Ms Brimble had been ecstatic, setting out on the "holiday of a lifetime" with family and friends on the P&O liner Pacific Sky on September 23, 2002.
That night, she met a group of eight men at a disco on the ship.
Close friend Nancy Chard today told Glebe Coroners Court she warned Ms Brimble not long after boarding the ship to stay away from the men.
"They were just basically watching every female so I just said to Di be very careful," Ms Chard said.
"They were odd, to my eyes they were really odd-looking people.
"There's a difference between just looking at a woman and undressing them by looking."
Ms Chard said she heard some of the men, who were staying in a cabin directly opposite hers, involved in an argument earlier that night with a group of girls.
She told the court the girls later informed her the men had asked them to expose their genitalia and had propositioned them.
The men were obviously drunk and had been making noise until the early hours of the morning, she said.
The day Ms Brimble's body was found, Ms Chard said she saw one of the eight men crying in the hallway, and in the following days, she said the men gave Ms Brimble's friends "filthy looks".
"They would give us a look as if to say, they have no shame," she said.
"It was almost like it was just playing, they had no remorse."
Ms Brimble's older sister Alma Wood, who also was on the cruise, tearfully told the court her sister had been a "prude" who would not have wilfully taken drugs or engaged in promiscuous sex.
"That sort of stuff was always gross to her," Ms Wood said.
The inquest before Deputy State Coroner Jacqueline Milledge continues next week.
Freeper women who go on cruises need to be very careful. We hear more and more of this kind of thing daily. Now about liberal women, who really cares? Any lib female would go cheerfully with eight men to a sexual party, heck, thats liberalism to the core.
Girls Gone Wild! It's the man's fault, always!

She wasn't warned strongly enough, apparently.
I really don't get a lot of these cruise stories... they're pretty sad. I've been on a couple of cruises and never saw the behavior like has been described in many of these horror stories... maybe because my husband and I only have eyes for each other????
Possible moral of the story - don't cruise without a partner???? Still, guess it doesn't apply here.. with family and friends and still pulled a Natalie Holloway...
Weird world we live in now.
I see someone in MY gym acting like that........in any way untoward..........I call 'em on it.
They listen, too.
Cruises are getting cheaper and cheaper. Heck, I even read recently that Wal-Mart is going to be selling cruise packages. You get a different class of people the cheaper they get.
Your so right. That's why they ought ot hang with me.
They can trust me.
I'm not like the others.
That is typical conservative thinking, right? /s
Is your point meant to bash WalMart shoppers, or Cruising? You need to be more specific when making such "broad brushstroke" statements, so we can figure out what kinnd of bigot you are....
For many college students, spring break is a time for letting loose but it is also a time when they are most likely to drink heavily and engage in other deviant behaviors.
Young women are especially at risk. A recent study by the American Medical Association surveyed 644 undergraduate and graduate women across the country concerning their drinking habits during spring break. The AMA reported 83 percent of the women surveyed said they drank more heavily during spring break than they normally drink and 74 percent said their sexual activity increases.
One of the most important things students need to remember is that criminals and predators go on spring break too, said Keith Sims, executive director of Safe Campuses Now.
Sims said because drinking alcohol reduces reaction time as well as reducing awareness of ones surroundings, women and men are more likely to become victims.
Alcohol affects women at a faster rate than men, the AMA reported.
Scientific evidence shows women process alcohol differently, putting them at greater risks for heart problems, reproductive disorders and liver disease, said Dr. J. Edward Hill, president of the AMA, in a press release. These survey results are extremely disturbing because it brings up an entirely new set of issues including increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases, blackouts and violence...
Thats why I only drink with my husband.... and lightly at that...
;D
Keep trying. I already have you figured out.
OMG,please, please, please don't let cruises go the way of air travel!
Heh.
"Any lib female would go cheerfully with eight men to a sexual party, heck, thats liberalism to the core."
Tis' a mighty broad brush with which you paint.........
