Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Couldn't have caught them anyway because the car rental was bogus

All those Homeland Security drills across the country and THIS is the type of situation (do authorities expect terrorists to be wearing name badges or providing accurate information at the scene of a tentative terrorism site?) whereby instructions need to be uniform, clear, concise and swiftly acted upon. Perhaps car rental agreements should require verification besides identification. Car rental agencies should be just as involved as airlines in criteria for passenger-terrorism lists IMHO.

California to use GPS to track known gang members

Snip: The gritty suburb of San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, this week became the first California city to use the GPS satellite navigation system to track gang members when the devices were strapped onto three parolees, state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Jeanne Woodford said.

Callers to Australian terrorism hotlines face taps

Snip: PEOPLE who contact the terrorism hotline could have their phones and emails tapped without their knowledge under new powers to be granted to law enforcement agencies. The Australian Federal Police revealed this week they would use the new surveillance powers covertly on innocent citizens who offered information about suspected terrorists - but under strict conditions.

3 dead, 7 injured in crash into NM medical building

Snip: "I just looked to my left and I was like, 'Oh my god, are my eyes tricking me, this guy is hauling through the parking lot like he was on a mission to run into the building'," said Carol Payne, who works at the state Child Support Enforcement Divsion in the Pollon Plaza building.

US has archaic tracking system for mad cow disease

Snip: But unlike Japan, Canada and Europe, the United States still does not have a coordinated system for tracking livestock.

Radical imam avoids UCF

Snip: We are pleased to announce that Imam Dremali has been forced to withdraw from the event due to our public awareness campaign. Dremali is currently ensconced in Des Moines Iowa - laying low - and is clearly unwilling to face the controversy that his presence at UCF would cause.

The Imam is an Egyptian by birth and fled to the United States because he was considered too radical even by the standards of his native Egypt.

Terrorism Summary 03/17/06

This week the government released thousands of documents capture in Iraq produced by Saddam’s regime. Already dozens of these reports clearly document coordination and cooperation with OBL and AQ to include training thousands of jihadi’s. Only time will tell how much of this will eventually get into the MSM. Tensions are high at basketball arenas in the US due to potential terror attacks. The war in Iraq has reached a new stage were the Iraqi army is proving itself capable to take over substantially more responsibilities for internal security.

Let me know if you want on or off the Ping list.

03/03/06  Current National Homeland Defense threat level is YELLOW

1. Attack threat windows - America
03/17/06  None currently identified.  There are concerns about an attack in the month of March.

03/03/06 Secondary windows:  None currently identified.

2. Attack Indicators - America
03/13/06  The level of “chatter” by al Qaeda operatives is currently as high or higher than in the months prior to 9-11, and the question in many parts of the U.S. and European intelligence communities is not if al Qaeda will strike again, but when. Much of the thinking centers on the near-term. This is also reflected in current corporate security alerts being circulated among elite business establishments.

There are several factors that point to al Qaeda at least having a plan for an imminent attack. The first is the January appearance of Osama bin Laden himself after months of silence. The second is the repeated warnings and boasts from bin Laden, Zawahiri and on al Qaeda web sites of impending action.

Several analysts I (not Godzilla) have spoken with believe the leadership of the historic al Qaeda would not raise expectations of an attack, especially at a time of intense competition with Zarqawi’s operation for the mantle of carrying out international jihad, without something important afoot. The risk of losing credibility is too high. Zawahiri is already viewed as the person carrying out action, while bin Laden and Zawahiri have been left in the roles of elder statesmen, respected but no longer operational in the field of battle.

One corporate risk analysis group reported something else of interest: A March 10 posting on al-Hesbah website, known for posting al Qaeda messages, carried a message from the Global Islamic Media Front. The message gives a final warning to the United States before carrying out what it said would be two devastating attacks. The second attack would not be launched until after Washington had time to respond to the first one, the message said.

While this is clearly propaganda, it is within the Islamic jihad tradition to give an enemy a chance to repent and convert before carrying out an attack, as the Prophet Mohammed did. Bin Laden did this before 9-11 as well, when few were paying attention.

Al Qaeda’s MO has been to make each succeeding attack more powerful and destructive than the previous one. This has given rise to growing concern that al Qaeda has the wherewithall to carry out a chemical attack or dirty bomb attack. Much of the current al Qaeda threat seems aimed at economic infrastructure, realizing a crippling economic blow would make it more difficult for the United States to continue to support the “apostate” regimes of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and elsewhere.  The signs are there that al Qaeda is poised to try to strike. It is not clear they will be successful.
http://www.douglasfarah.com/
Godzilla note:  Some have come out and discounted the “ben Williams” character as being in essence and Islamic “Aussie Bloke”.  Furthermore, his claims to be in connection with AQ are under serious question.  GIMF also has a lack luster record of words over action.  The following sites have additional discussions regarding the validity of ben Williams:

http://analysis.threatswatch.org/2006/03/rakan-bin-williams-claims-of-a/
http://www.jihadunspun.com/intheatre_internal.php?article=106658&list=/home.php

However, the relative abundance of audio/video messages from OBL and Al Zawahiri over the past few months has fired up the imagination of many of the jihadist wannabes.  If this expectation is not met, OBL and AQ will likely lose more status in the eyes of Islamic radicals.

3. Current Terrorist Operations

AQ / OBL
03/15/06  A member of a password-protected al-Qaeda-affiliated forum recently posted a discussion of considerable length concerning the absence of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi from a leadership position within the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group for seven insurgency groups in Iraq, including al-Qaeda in Iraq, in which he was formerly the Emir.
http://siteinstitute.org/bin/articles.cgi?ID=publications151006&Category=publications&Subcategory=0

Godzilla note:  Zarqawi has been off the net for about a month now, whereas he used to be much more prevalent in propaganda releases.  This SITE report is dated February 23, 2006.  Zarqawi has not been heard from since before the beginning of the new year.

Pakistan
03/11/06  At least 26 people, including some foreigners, were killed late Friday in an assault by the Pakistani army on a tribal region near the Afghan border where it was believed terrorists were gathered, the military said Saturday.    Excerpted
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/03/11/pakistan.attacks/
Godzilla note:  Just as in Afghanistan, spring ushers in a period of more military operations.  Increase in attacks is due to that factor.

Iran
03/11/06  Iran on Saturday explicitly warned for the first time that it could use oil as a weapon if the U.N. Security Council imposes sanctions over an Iranian nuclear program that the U.S. and others suspect is trying to produce atomic bombs.
  http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1107AP_Iran_Nuclear.html>
Godzilla note:  The use of oil as a weapon by the Iranians is not a suprise. An Iranian blog is reporting that the Iranian government will be given 4 weeks to give into the Security council demands.  If they don’t comply, the US will strike the Iranian sites.  On an additional note, there are reports of widespread civil unrest against the current Iranian government.  Reporting suggests that there is a grass roots movement to oppose the government and its nuclear weapons research.  The combination of the two may be why Iran is now suddenly interested in bi-lateral talks with the US regarding Iraq.

Afghanistan
03/16/06 Afghan police said they arrested Thursday two suspected Taleban insurgents carrying letters from the movement’s fugitive leader and Al-Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri.
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/subcontinent/2006/March/subcontinent_March611.xml§ion=subcontinent&col

03/13/06  Apparently the anticipated Taliban "spring offensive" is already under way. The number of attacks across Afghanistan soared in late February and early March by more than 20 percent. As predicted, Coalition forces that have only recently assumed operational control in the southern and southeastern areas of the country have been particularly targeted. While the attackers have had some successes, killing a number of Coalition troops, the level of casualties has not significantly increased as a result of the higher operational tempo.
http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/afghan/articles/20060313.aspx

Iraq
03/16/06  Coalition forces launched the largest air assault in Iraq since U.S. forces invaded that country in 2003, the U.S. military confirmed Thursday.   The assault was launched in the southern Salah Ad Din province to clear a suspected insurgent operating area southeast of Samarra.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,188092,00.html
Godzilla note:  This operation is designed to enhance Iraqi military skills at a larger scale level and is kind of a graduation exercise.  The Iraqi military has been progressively learning how to conduct more and more complex operations with this being the largest one to date.  This provides higher level Iraqi military staff experience in command, control, communications and maneuvering a large force in combat.  I don’t think they’ll find too much, but it is a big step for the Iraqi army.

03/14/06  The Iraqi interior minister said Tuesday that authorities had foiled an al-Qaida plot that would have put hundreds of its men at critical guard posts around Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, home to the U.S. and other foreign embassies as well as the Iraqi government.  A senior Defense Ministry official said the 421 al-Qaida fighters were actually recruited to storm the U.S. and British embassies and take hostages. Several ranking Defense Ministry officials have been jailed in the plot, the official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060314/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_al_qaida

03/15/06  Testifying on Capitol Hill today, General John Abizaid said claims by Iraq's Interior Ministry that Al Qaeda terrorists tried to storm the highly secured Green Zone in Baghdad where the U.S. and British embassies are located were true.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,187983,00.html
Godzilla note:  This successfully countered plot may have been the source for the intelligence reporting a “Big Bang”.  This would have been VERY spectacular.  Here’s the article as posted in the 03/03/06 Summary -

03/03/06  U.S. officials tell CBS News that intelligence has picked up reports that al Qaeda in Iraq is planning what one source calls the "Big Bang," a spectacular terrorist attack in Iraq against either a single high-profile target or multiple targets simultaneously. -snip-

Lebanon
03/11/06  Four Palestinians and four Lebanese nationals with suspected links to Al Qaida, who are believed to have been involved in rocket attacks on northern Israel in December, were recently arrested by Lebanese security officials.  -snip-
The Al Safir and The Daily Star newspapers, stated that a large stockpile of weapons, including missiles, rockets and explosives, that had been stashed in caves and on lands the suspects owned, were also seized.  Excerpted
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1139395580674&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
Godzilla note:  RUMINT suggests that Hamas is cooperating with Lebanese forces to push AQ out of their (Hamas) operational grounds.  Seems Hamas want to be the only player.  Al-Zarhawi rebuked Hamas in a recent message, could be bad blood between them.

Jordan
03/15/06  Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and seven other people were indicted Tuesday in Jordan's worst-ever terror bombing, the near-simultaneous attacks at three Amman hotels in November.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,187820,00.html

03/13/06  With al Qaeda taking a beating in Iraq, the organization is moving more of its operations to Jordan. The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al Zarqawi, is a Jordanian, has been condemned to death in Jordan for terrorism, and would like to inflict some pain back home, if only for old times sake. Islamic terrorists have long been active in Jordan. Zarqawi found himself in Iraq in early 2003, because the police were hot on his heels back in Jordan, and Saddam was always quick to offer sanctuary for terrorists. One reason for the al Qaeda popularity in Jordan was the large number of Palestinians living there. Since al Qaeda is a big supporter of destroying Israel, many Palestinians are eager to assist al Qaeda. The U.S. Invasion of Iraq was seen as an attack on al Qaeda, and Jordan's aligning itself with the United States, made the Jordanian government an even bigger target for Islamic terrorism.
The Jordanians fought back. Jordanian security forces stopped two Islamic terror attacks in 2003, eight in 2004 and ten in 2005. With the defeat of al Qaeda in Iraq, more attacks are being directed against Jordanian targets. This is making Israel nervous, because the Jordanian government, despite occasional anti-Israel rhetoric, has long been a reliable and peaceful neighbor. If Islamic terrorists took over, that would all change.

Israel
03/15/06  Tuesday night, Israel went on one level short of highest terror alert for threatened reprisals after the capture of six high-profile Palestinian terrorist chiefs in Jericho. Another 15 Palestinian suspects were rounded up on the West Bank, 12 wanted on terrorist charges.

03/14/06   Fearing for their safety: European monitors at the Rafah crossing left their posts Tuesday afternoon, Palestinian sources reported.   The Europeans apparently decided to leave the crossing after being instructed to do so in light of fears for their safety, after more than a dozen foreign nationals were abducted in the Gaza Strip and West Bank in protest of the IDF's Jericho operation Tuesday.

03/11/06  Israeli forces along the northern border were on high alert Monday against the possibility of Hizballah terror attacks ahead of increasing international pressure on Iran and Syria, said a senior source in Jerusalem.   The International Atomic Energy Agency - the United Nations' nuclear watchdog -- referred the issue of Iran's nuclear development to the U.N. Security Council last week, angering Tehran.

Italy -  Continued high threat through April due to pending national elections
03/03/06  Godzilla note:  Italy should remain on alert through the end of national elections to prevent attacks to influence the results as happened to Spain.

Amsterdam
03/16/06  Friday marked an important date in this struggle, as a court in Amsterdam issued a much-awaited verdict in the trial of the so-called "Hofstad group," the maxi terrorist cell that planned various attacks throughout the Netherlands between 2003 and 2005.
The court convicted nine of the 14 alleged terrorists, imposing sentences up to 15 years. A key member of the group, Mohammed Bouyeri, had previously been sentenced to life in a separate trial. Bouyeri reached worldwide notoriety in November 2004, when he ritualistically killed in broad daylight Theo van Gogh, the controversial Dutch filmmaker who had directed a movie highly critical of Islam's treatment of women.  Excerpted

Godzilla note: It is unfortunate that the guards were not well trained enough to react properly. Improper response to a probe invites a follow-up attack.

03/14/06  On Monday, jurors heard an informant say a top deputy of Osama bin Laden had once lived in Lodi.  Naseem Khan testified that Ayman al-Zawahri -- bin Laden's doctor -- lived in Lodi and attended a mosque there in 1998 and 1999.

Godzilla note: Although Al-Zawahri was in the US in the early ‘90s, it is unlikely that he was here in this time frame. The government lawyers have nothing to confirm the claim with and this may even hurt the prosecution’s case.

The two mosque leaders, Yassin M. Aref, 35, and Mohammed M. Hossain, 50, were charged in August 2004 with conspiring with a government informant to take part in what they believed was a plot to import a shoulder-fired missile and assassinate a Pakistani diplomat.   Excerpted

03/16/06   Federal agents found publications promoting jihad and a Pakistani militant group in the central California home of a father and son charged with lying about involvement in an al-Qaida training camp, a prosecutor said Wednesday.   FBI officials found the items while searching the family home in Lodi two days after the men were arrested last June, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Tice-Raskin said during the men's trial in U.S. District Court.  "This is the book entitled 'Book of Jihad,'" he said. "It teaches the virtues of violent jihad," the Arabic term for holy war.

  4. Attack method.
03/17/06 There are still two methods that are underconsideration. The first is the spectacular 9/11 attack. There has only been one attack of this type. The second, and far more common is the adaptation of an attack in areas of public gatherings, either at mass transit locations (rail lines, buses), or markets. An adaptation to attack sporting events is also considered under the second method.

What is being evaluated more closely is an energy infrastructure (primarly oil) attack to cripple that delicate portion of our economy.

03/17/06  UPDATE  The driver of a truck that ran a checkpoint at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on Tuesday had a loaded gun at his feet and what may have been cocaine in his pocket, Tucson police said Wednesday.   The truck also reeked of alcohol when rescuers arrived to tend to the driver and passenger after they crashed into a metal road barrier that protects the air base from unauthorized entry.  The men remained hospitalized in fair condition late Wednesday.   Police said they have discounted terrorism as a potential motive and now suspect the duo may have been impaired by drugs or alcohol and confused about where they were.

Finally, they convict muslims rather than Christians for Bosnian war crimes!

Now if Christians could be treated respectfully rather than negatively by the liberals and MSM in THIS country who insist they have no bias toward us while removing all vestiges of our religion everywhere they possibly can.....while insisting the religion that threatens to kill infidels and calls on suicide bombers to exterminate Christians and Jews be taught to our nation's youth in public schools.....

By the way, Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone!
