Teheran, 16 March (AKI) - The former reformist president of Iran, Mohammed Khatami, believes the option of a military strike by Washington is being seriously considered by the Pentagon.
The daily Rooz on Line, close to the reformists, on Thursday reported that in a recent meeting in Tehran, Khatami revealed to a selected group some details of a message from the White House. According to the online daily, in the message relayed by an emissary of the White House to Khatami on a recent visit to Berlin, the American warned him of their intention to bomb Iran's nuclear installations if the government continued enriching uranium.
Rooz on Line goes on to quote Khatami, as saying that in the American message there was reference to an approximate date of an attack. "One month after the first meeting of the UN Security Council on the Iranian dossier," which is scheduled for Friday.
The Internet daily adds that on his return from Germany, Khatami immediately informed the authorities of the contents of the message.

Erbil, 16 March (AKI) - A Kurdish source in Baghdad has told a Kurdish national daily that the Mahdi Army, the militia of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, " has set up a shadow government in Sadr City in the centre of Baghdad". The source told the Aso daily: "this group was tasked with carrying out the affairs of the city in the place of the Iraqi government and institutions."
The source explained that the Mahdi Army, accused of kidnappings and sectarian killings, has transformed the rundown Sadr city into an independent district with its security forces and its own courts which do not only judge local residents but also Shiites from other areas of the capital.

Two Bosnian Muslim Commanders Convicted
3/16/06
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands-Two Bosnian Muslim army commanders were convicted of war crimes Wednesday for failing to rein in foreign Muslim volunteers who murdered and tortured Bosnian Croats and Serbs in a 1990s "holy war."
The U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague sentenced former Bosnian army chief of staff Enver Hadzihasanovic to five years in prison and his deputy, Amir Kubura, to 2 1/2 years.
It was the first time the Yugoslav tribunal dealt with the so-called mujahedeen, or holy warriors, who came mainly from North Africa and the Middle East to fight on the Muslim side in the 1992-95 Bosnian war that killed an estimated 200,000 people.

Officials say Wyoming ranchers need to be aware of terror threat
Wyoming farmers and ranchers need to stay vigilant against the possibility of terrorism aimed at disrupting the state's agriculture industry, state and federal officials said Thursday at a state homeland security conference.
"Is agriculture a target? Is agriculture in Wyoming a target? Yes," said Rick Riesland, area emergency coordinator for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The federal government has found documents from the al-Qaida terrorist network that it has planned biological attacks on the United States, Riesland stated in a slide presentation.
Disease agents, such as the virus that causes foot and mouth disease, are readily available worldwide and could easily be spread among food animals in the United States, said Riesland, a veterinarian. And he warned that agriculture is a soft target.
"Our animals have not been exposed to that virus, foot and mouth, since 1929," Riesland said. He said the possibility of transmission if the disease ever got re-established in the United States is tremendous.

Hi all, just checking in.
I started work at Brookings today... it went pretty well.
My first task was to add this article to their site, I thought some here might be interested:

Seeing Hamas Through Different Lenses
http://brookings.edu/views/op-ed/telhami/20060315.htm
A CNN headline last week left an unmistakable impression: "Al-Qaida's Ayman Zawahiri congratulates Hamas on its victory." Al-Jazeera's take on the same story left an altogether different impression: "Zawahiri attacks Hamas" for embracing the "traitor secularists."
A careful reading of the Arabic text of the statement by Mr. al-Zawahiri, No. 2 to Osama bin Laden, shows that al-Jazeera was more accurate in its emphasis. But the contrast served to underscore that Middle Easterners and Americans are judging Hamas through different lenses, and the degree to which that contrast could change.
Many in the Arab world, including liberals who were hoping to see Hamas defeated in the Palestinian elections, now see possibilities in Hamas' victory and seem fully prepared to accept that the organization will change. They are viewing it through the prism of hope.
I'm having a bit of a moral quandary about this.
If worse comes to worst, knowing I have a three month supply of food, medicine, etc.(self-sufficient for me and my family) do I ignore my neighbors' pleas for help? (even though they might have laughed at my attempts to talk them into "stocking up") or do I risk my family's well-being by sharing?
The Christian part of me leads me in one direction, and my survival instinct leads me in another.
Guess I will worry about it when the time comes.
Looks great, starting off on the right foot.
Thanks, Vel.
I lived in Wyo. for 30 years. Our best friend there has a huge cow/calf ranch. I will pass this on to him. Although, he is also a FR lurker and will probably know already.
If the Avian flu kills off our poultry supply, and hoof and mouth gets to our beef, what is left? I am not fond of trout.
Congratulations, you sure are off to a good start.
I guess, to me, it's a choice someone makes. To be prepared or not. To put your head in the sand or see reality. To hold your hand out and expect Uncle Sam (i.e. the taxpayers) to fill it, or get a job. Mind you, I'm talking about able-bodied adults. We all know it's not that difficult, or expensive, to gradually build up supplies. I doubt I could turn a stranger away hungry. But I would tell them "just this once".
We can hope we get something from this
Everyone should be required to view that once a month.
BTTT!

Thanks SlowBoat407.
Well, wonder wonder what this is all about?
Thank you JP.
Thank you for the links Oorang.
LOL at your first sentence...teeeeeheeeee. I know what you mean. The Midwest had a big ice storm during Christmas 2004 and we didn't have electric, gas, phone, nor heat for six days (with zero degree temps). The first few days everyone was ok, but by day 3 you couldn't find a candle, lamp oil, propane tank, generators, or any heating device within a 30 mile radius. My family was ok because we had a nice supply of essentials and enough in stock that we took care of several others.
For me, one of the most shocking revelations was the way the neighbors handled the entire experience. They really weren't prepared at all. A younger girlfriend that lives beside me came over Christmas Eve crying her eyes out. They did have a generator but decided to let the in-laws use it and stay at their house. That lasted 3 nights and 2 days before she lost it. She spent Christmas Eve at my house along with an elderly neighbor and a single mom with a 1 year old. (Not one emergency agency, law enforcement officer nor anyone else showed up to check on anyone.)
However, I did just read in the SD paper this morning that the county is mailing a disaster plan to every household. So maybe more people will pay attention when they get something in the mail. Who knows.
What a great idea. I remember in the 80's every household got a brochure about AIDS. That was the first mailing of its kind to every single household in America. I think DHS should do the same. (btw, I kept mine...think I can sell it on e-bay? lol)
Well now, more Taliban arrests.
That's a good thing.
Closer and closer and closer....
the enemy must be sweating bullets,
pardon the pun.
