Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Run, Hillary, run!

The dispute over control of six major U.S. ports has ended; or has it? Dubai Ports World has, in light of congressional antagonism, decided to abandon the U.S. part of the port-control package. According to the most recent news reports, should DPW not find a U.S. company willing to assume control of the ports, the deal could be on again.

That news should serve to re-ignite New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's hysteria. In expressing her rabid opposition to DPW assuming control of the ports in New York City, Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Baltimore, the junior senator seems to have forgotten an event that occurred during the fading days of the Clinton White House years. This event could eventually put U.S. interests in as much jeopardy as a United Arab Emirates-controlled port facility.

Suspected Insurgents Detained; Weapons Caches Found

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2006 – U.S. soldiers and Iraqi security forces in recent days have continued to detain suspected insurgents and to find and destroy weapons caches, military officials reported.

Soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, and Iraqi security forces in the last two days detained several insurgents and confiscated materials useful in building roadside bombs.
Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, and Iraqi police searched a house and found more than 300 false identification cards, including Iraqi police IDs. During the search, an Iraqi man came to the house to see the owner. After a few minutes of questioning, the man admitted to previously purchasing a false ID card from the homeowner. Both were taken into custody.

On a combined patrol with Iraqi police, 1st BCT soldiers discovered a weapons cache at a home in Kirkuk. Iraqi Emergency Services Unit had detained the house's owner the day before, after receiving information linking the man to a car-bomb attack. A search yielded several bags of ammunition as well as a large cache of materials for homemade bombs, including rocket propelled grenade rounds, C-4 explosive, radios and rolls of electrical wire.

Acting on citizens' tips, Iraqi police raided two houses near Tikrit yesterday and found weapons and explosives. The police secured both sites and called in an explosive ordnance disposal team from Task Force Band of Brothers. The caches included mortar rounds, artillery shells, land mines, a mortar tube, homemade-bomb components and bulk explosives. The police ensured the area was clear of civilians and the EOD team performed a controlled detonation that destroyed the weapons and both houses.

Task Force Band of Brothers soldiers unearthed a large cache of weapons and explosives at a house south of Tikrit yesterday. At the same house on Feb. 10, soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, found mortar rounds that were being disassembled for use in roadside bombs at the same location and detained the homeowner. When soldiers returned yesterday and conducted a more detailed search of the area, they found aircraft rounds, artillery shells, hand grenades, homemade-bomb components, a sniper rifle and several thousand rounds of small arms ammunition. An EOD team determined the cache was too unstable too move. The team cleared the area of civilians and destroyed the weapons and the house in a controlled detonation.

Two off-duty Iraqi soldiers captured two terrorists who were planting a roadside bomb in Kirkuk province March 12 and turned them over to police. An Iraqi explosives unit disposed of the bomb.

In the past three days, Iraqi police captured several individuals involved in terrorist activities in one form or another. Police in the Daquq district captured a member of the Omar Bin Khatab terrorist cell who is known to transport weapons and roadside bombs throughout the region, while police in the Qoria district detained a woman suspected of using her home as a safe haven for terrorists. In another community, children told police of weapons stashed in a nearby trash bin, where police found 18 fuses and more than 20 explosive rounds.

Thanks very much for the ping Velveeta, I'm way behind on the news.

Regarding this incident, for what it's worth, they had it on the Portland,OR evening news. They showed a few people standing around the scene of the accident. A couple of them were women who were wearing islamic dress and the head-wrap scarf thingy. That implied, to me, that the perp is islamic.

PAKISTAN: TROOPS DESTROY MADRASSA IN NORTH WAZIRISTAN

Miran Shah, 15 March (AKI) - Pakistani security forces have blown up an Islamic seminary or madrassa in the tribal region of North Waziristan which lies on the Afghan-Pakistan border. The privately-run school, known as the Khalifa Islami Madrassa, is believed to be linked with the fugitive Taliban leader Jalaluddin Haqqani. No one was in the school building when it was destroyed, according to a report by the Associated Press agency which also said that the soldiers removed books from the school before blowing it up. The school was used mainly by Afghan students.

The demolition of the madrassa is part of the continuing military operation by Pakistani security forces against pro-Taliban militants in the tribal belt. On Monday, Pakistan had ordered all Afghan nationals to return to their country. The demolition followed a bomb blast at an army security post near Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan. No causlaties were reported from that blast.

Earlier this month, the Pakistan army said more than a 120 militants have been killed following three days of clashes which observors said were some the fiercest seen in the region.

A separate madrassa in North Waziristan, Darul Uloom Faredia Gulshan-i-Ilum which is run by wanted cleric Maulana Abdul Khaliq was also destroyed on 7 March by the Pakistan army. No one was in that building when it was destroyed. Maulvi Abdul Khaliq together with another cleric Maulvi Sadiq Noor are believed to be leading the pro-Taliban militants in the area. Reports earlier said that the two have gone undergound.

TERRORISM: IRAQI TRAINING VIDEO FOR TALIBAN FIGHTERS

Karachi, 14 March (AKI) - (Syed Saleem Shahzad) - Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have acquired a training video on urban guerilla warfare produced by an Iraqi militant group. A copy of this video, which is in a CD format, has been obtained by Adnkronos International (AKI). The Taliban has received training from the group known as the Islamic Army of Iraq and have brought the CD back to their bases both in Afghanistan and in the tribal areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The video is not for propaganda purposes but strictly for training. Many of the leaders of the Islamic Army of Iraq are believed to be former officials of the Iraqi army under the regime of Saddam Hussein including those from Saddam's elite Republican Guards which may explain why the video shows sophisticated attacks. The Islamic Army in Iraq is a militant group notorious for carrying out abductions in Iraq and was responsible for the kidnapping and death of Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni in 2004.

97 percent of the researchers receiving funds from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study bioweapon agents had never been funded for such work before.

It IS very interesting AND very troubling. Considering other venues (airlines, high security contractors, et al) and their lapses concerning hiring practices, wondering what type of security clearances employees (and all other people with access, including janitors and clerical staff) have at the 300 labs with access to live bioweapons agents (that would be in excess of 16,500 individuals with high security clearances - daresay the expenditure involved in such clearances would be enormous) (would they spend it?).

Investigators believed the gunman's motive could be unrelated to the restaurant or its employees after a witness told them about something the gunman said. They declined to give details.

Another attacker with a message?

Dutch get tougher on terror
March 15, 2006

As events such as the Madrid and London bombings have abundantly proved, Europe has become one of the key battlegrounds of the global war on terror. Friday marked an important date in this struggle, as a court in Amsterdam issued a much-awaited verdict in the trial of the so-called "Hofstad group," the maxi terrorist cell that planned various attacks throughout the Netherlands between 2003 and 2005.

The court convicted nine of the 14 alleged terrorists, imposing sentences up to 15 years. A key member of the group, Mohammed Bouyeri, had previously been sentenced to life in a separate trial. Bouyeri reached worldwide notoriety in November 2004, when he ritualistically killed in broad daylight Theo van Gogh, the controversial Dutch filmmaker who had directed a movie highly critical of Islam's treatment of women.

The verdict represents a major victory against what Dutch intelligence agencies consider the most severe threat to the country's security, and the first successful use of new antiterrorism legislation.

But the Amsterdam trial has an importance that goes well beyond the sphere of counterterrorism. This verdict is the culmination of a new trend that has been growing in Holland since the van Gogh assassination, as the country has gone through a severe self-examination. The Hofstad group is just the most dramatic and evident manifestation of a much larger problem. Most of the members of the group, in fact, were born in the Netherlands, sons or grandsons of North African immigrants who had grown up immersed in Dutch culture, yet had embraced radical Islam and decided to "wage a holy war against their own country," as Dutch prosecutors defined it.
