Scare at the Sub Base
GROTON -- Police and fire units have set up a perimeter at the Groton Sub Base. Bomb-sniffing dogs have been also called out to the scene.
Navy authorities are providing very limited information as to what happened Monday morning.
Crystal Lake Avenue and the military highway road along the river have been blocked off by local police.
This provides access to Gate #1 where the incident involving a truck took place.
A spokesperson for the sub base tells Eyewitness news that at 6:30 a.m. Monday a Navy dog trained to sniff for explosives sensed something on a truck attempting to enter Gate #1. That's the gate near the Nautilus Museum.
The Navy immediatly shut down the base. Groton police cordoned off Crystal Lake Ave and Military Highway. Around mid morning the other gates north on Route 12 were opened.
Federal agencies are on site as is the Navy bomb squad. The Navy is not saying if anything was actually discovered or removed.
The other possibility is that this could be a drill. But they are not indicating that at this time.
We'll have more on this story on Eyewitness News starting at 5.

PANDEMIC PLANNING UPDATE
A Report from Secretary Michael O. Leavitt"

I personally think some of Bushs' cabinet are not up to par. Leavitt, Chertoff, Minetta, Norton just resigned. Brown was chosen for FEMA, not a good choice. Who else?
Thank you JP and Godzilla.
Look at this link. As I stated in an earlier thread, when the government tells you to be prepared to homeschool your kids, you'd better pay attention. So many people are just ignoring the possibility of this turning into a pandemic.

The President's very best asset is Cheney. I sincerely hope he knows that.
Off topic: Prayers to you and your fellow Texans. Those fires are horrific.
Smiling a tad bit...do you think the government reads FR-TM?
On a sad note, just like 9/11; some people willfully choose to be ignorant and then are shocked, shocked, shocked when a terrorist attack happens.
I just printed up that information.
The same would apply to a major terrorist attack on our soil.
I'm afraid that most Americans will expect the Government to take care of them if the worst case scenario happens. But as we learned during Katrina, we are on our own, and we'd better be ready. I've read many stories today about someone in government suggesting we keep a weeks worth of tuna and powdered milk under our beds. We're gonna need a lot more than a weeks worth if this happens!
"I'm afraid that most Americans will expect the Government to take care of them..."
I understand your concern.

Snip: During the operation, the police busted prostitution houses, illegal maid networks, forged ID document rackets, alcohol manufacturers and distributors, and illegal international call cabin operators. Drugs were confiscated from a number of homes. Security forces will continue performing operations till they clean out our cities from crime, the officer told Arab News.
Snip: Customs officials argue that's why they started the Container Security Initiative. Now operational at some 40 foreign ports, the program "pushes the borders out" by stationing Customs inspectors at foreign seaports to target and oversee the inspection of high-risk cargo before it sets sail for the U.S.
That's just more eyewash. What officials don't tell you is that those U.S. inspectors have to rely on locals to inspect the containers they flag as high risk. And many times the locals refuse to look. Between the start of the CSI program in January 2002 and September 2004, foreign inspectors refused Customs' requests to inspect 4,013 containers. That's 28% of the total referred to them within this period of inspection. Feel safer?
And few foreign partners inspect containers for nukes. Only two foreign ports in the CSI program even have the unreliable radiation portal monitors. Feel safer now?
Snip: New Jersey officers patrolling the harbor - as well as trains and ferries that go back and forth between the states - lose authority under current law when they cross into New York.
During emergencies, Gov. George Pataki has had to sign executive orders allowing New Jersey law enforcement to make arrests in New York, and homeland security officials in both states agree the system is inefficient.
Muslim cleric says Islam will finally win
Snip: Speaking to the Oslo newspaper, Mullah Krekar, who came from Iraq, said: 'We`re the ones who will change you. Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes. 'Every western woman in the (European Union) is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries (is) producing 3.5 children. By 2050, 30 percent of the population in Europe will be Muslim.'
Feds announce Bay Area Latino gang arrests
Snippets: At least one man is believed to belong to the notorious El Salvadorean gang MS-13, while others are members of the Norteno, Sureno and Sur-13 gangs, Holman said.
Three of the men arrested were U.S. citizens and the remainder foreign nationals in the United States illegally, one from El Salvador and 11 from Mexico.
And most of those who expect the government to take care of them vote Democrat. That's how they get their power.
