Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

"Libya: 'We do not allow occupiers into our country'"
Jerusalem Post ^ | 3-22-06 | RAFAEL D. FRANKEL

Posted on 03/22/2006 6:47:52 AM PST by SJackson

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "History was thwarted early Wednesday morning when a peace mission making its way across the Sahara Desert was refused entry into Libya due to the participation of three Israelis who were flatly denied entrance at the border.

The group of people from around the world, including four Americans, was welcome in Libya, a special representative of Libyan leader Mohmar Qadaffi told the mission as it stood on Libyan soil just five meters from the formal border crossing. But not the Israelis.

"Israel does not exist as a country, it is Palestine. We don't allow occupiers into our country," the official said. "Now I order you all to leave Libya."

Earlier, the group had decided it would not cross into Libya unless everyone was allowed in.

After being denied, the nine-person group voted to stay the night at the border and see if diplomacy and their message of goodwill to all peoples would gain them admittance Wednesday into the nation which has until now barred Israeli visitors.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it appeared those efforts had failed and the group was considering its options."

Thanks for the link.

I had never seen that photograph before. Maybe the footage taken that day should be shown as the author says. People do tend to forget.

****Once on the road you are MUCH more vulnerable.****

True. I need to do an inventory of emergency supplies and restock our vehicle in the event we are away from home when something happens. Blankets, jackets, food, water, matches, walking shoes, small backpack, first aid kit, etc.

Untreatable TB called 'a death sentence'

New tuberculosis resists most drugs
BY NANCY KERCHEVAL
BLOOMBERG NEWS

March 24, 2006

A strain of virtually untreatable tuberculosis has been diagnosed, raising concern about a worldwide epidemic, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

The strain, known as extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis or XDR TB, resists all so-called first-line drugs and three of the six classes of second-line drugs, the CDC said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

"The emergence of XDR TB is cause for concern because it is widely distributed geographically, including in the United States, and renders patients virtually untreatable with available drugs," the CDC study said.

The strain grew to about 350 cases worldwide between 2000 and 2004, primarily in South Korea, eastern Europe and western Asia, the CDC said. In the United States, 74 cases were reported.

The development follows the spread of what was called multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the 1990s. Known as MDR TB, it requires the use of less effective, more toxic and costlier drugs than the so-called first-line medications.

"Importantly, the emergence of MDR TB 15 years ago was a harbinger of a pandemic; this scenario must be prevented from happening with XDR TB," the CDC warned.

Tuberculosis causes lesions on the lungs and leads to coughing, fever, weight loss and chest pain. About 9 million people a year become ill with the disease worldwide, and 2 million of them die, the CDC said.

In the industrialized nations of Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Britain and the United States, XDR TB increased from 3% of drug-resistant cases in 2000 to 11% in 2004, the CDC said.

U.S. patients with XDR TB were 64% more likely to die during treatment than patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, according to a data collected from 1993 to 2002.

"It's basically a death sentence," said Dr. Marcos Espinale, executive secretary of the World Health Organization's Stop TB Partnership. "If people are failing first- and second-line drugs and we don't have in the pipeline a new drug for immediate use, that's a crisis."

Dr. Henry Blumberg, an Emory University medical school professor, said the figures are preliminary, and the problem may be bigger than the numbers indicate.

Some drugs under development might become effective treatments for these difficult forms of TB. But CDC funding for TB control and research hasn't kept up with inflation, Blumberg said.

The heightened concern comes as U.S. tuberculosis cases fell to 14,093 in 2005 from 14,516 in 2004, the CDC said. The rate of infection, 4.8 cases per 100,000 people, was the lowest since reporting began in 1953.

However, the TB rate in foreign-born people in the United States was 8.7 times that of U.S. natives, the CDC said. Most of the foreign-born cases in 2005 involved people from Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, India and China.

"Worsening resistance around the world poses a problem in the U.S., said Dr. Kenneth Cas"

****Never forget: The Falling Man***

It seems like SUCH an effort for the MSM to nudge people into remembering we have enemies who want to kill Americans at their homes and places of work.

Perhaps a film portraying the terrorists as sympathetic....(oh wait, that's already been done*.....)

*sarcasm

Here's the US Secretary of Health & Human Services 500 Day Plan

Snip, the very last item, Expanding the international network of early-warning infectious disease surveillance.

Personal Note: "International" does not translate to handling the ever-increasing strains of TB and other infectious diseases inflicted upon Americans in America by virtually uncontrolled access and abuse by illegal aliens.

500 days means potentially hundreds or thousands of American citizens facing medical tests, fear of infecting their families and medical expense (especially those lacking health insurance) due to the influx of illegals.

The Global Threat of New and Reemerging Infectious Diseases: Reconciling U.S.National Security and Public Health Policy

Book Reopened on Infectious Diseases

One of the things epidemiologist have been looking at for quite awhile is the reemergences of infectious diseases that were previously considered eradicated. These "new strains" are predicted to come back as super strains... with a vengenance.

Thanks again. There's so much 9/11 material--I've only seen a small fraction of it, but always so interested to see more. Such a sobering event.

You would think every New Yorker would be the most ardent supporter of strict border controls and national security measures.

"Police Issue Warrant for Colorado Bomber"
Mar 26th - 1:13am

By CATHERINE TSAI Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "DENVER (AP) - A federal arrest warrant was issued Saturday for a man suspected of planting explosive devices at the homes of his former co-workers at an aviation company, and police said they believe whoever made the bombs is responsible for similar devices found in other states in recent months.

Robert L. Burke, 54, is suspected of placing five explosive devices at Grand Junction-area homes of Serco Group Pcl. employees and an FAA employee Friday. Three of the bombs went off, causing some slight property damage but no injuries, and two were disarmed.

Police have described the bombs as containers resembling office-style trash cans with a device strapped to them.

The devices were similar to some found in other states, Grand Junction police spokeswoman Linda Bowman said. Those bombs also did not hurt anyone, she said.

She declined to say what states the other devices were found but said they were in places where Burke either lived or had some connection through Serco, and that the cases remain unsolved. She also said Burke had worked for Serco in Arizona and California."

Putin accused of plagiarising his PhD thesis
timesonline ^ | March 26, 2006 | Tony Allen-Mills

The career of President Vladimir Putin of Russia was built at least in part on a lie, according to US researchers. A new study of an economics thesis written by Putin in the mid-1990s has revealed that large chunks of it were copied from an American text.

Putin was labelled a plagiarist yesterday after a pair of researchers
at the Brookings Institution, a Washington DC think tank,

established that the Russian president’s academic credentials were based on a dissertation he had lifted in part verbatim from the Russian translation of a management study written by two professors at the University of Pittsburgh in 1978.
---
The embarrassing revelation that Putin, a former KGB agent, may have cheated and lied about his qualifications follows a long search by US scholars for evidence of the president’s academic prowess. A copy of the thesis was eventually located in the electronic files of a Moscow technical library.

Case Dropped Against Afghan Christian

Mar 26, 8:16 AM (ET)

POLICHARKI, Afghanistan (AP) - An Afghan court has dismissed case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity for lack of evidence, an official said Sunday.

The court, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, had been under intense international pressure to drop the case against Abdul Rahman, who faced a possible death sentence for his public conversion.

Some Islamic clerics had called for his execution, saying Rahman would face danger from his countrymen if he were released.

On Sunday, he was moved to a notorious maximum-security prison outside Kabul that is also home to hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaida militants. The move to Policharki Prison came after detainees threatened his life at an overcrowded police holding facility in central Kabul, a court official said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Gen. Shahmir Amirpur, who is in charge of Policharki, confirmed the move and said Rahman had also been begging his guards to provide him with a Bible.
