Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Bush Calls for Fair Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - President Bush, bracing for more street protests and a Senate showdown on immigration reform, called Saturday for legislation that does not force America to choose between being a welcoming society and a lawful one.

"America is a nation of immigrants, and we're also a nation of laws," Bush said in his weekly radio address about the emotional immigration issue that has driven a wedge in his party.

*** White House Inc.

Bush sides with business leaders who want legislation to let some immigrants stay in the country and work for a set period of time. Others, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, say national security concerns should drive immigration reform.

More stolen "Red Bull"

Over 600 Cases Of Red Bull Stolen (Delaware)
Mar. 25, 2006

If Red Bull gives you wings like they say it does… someone in Delaware is flying pretty high right now. Police say that a truck holding over 600 cases of the stuff turned up missing near Bear this week. When it was found abandoned on Thursday on Kirkwood highway near Newark… the ignition had been popped out and the back door jimmied open. All 622 cases were gone… and the driver of the truck says his vehicle was cleaner than it had ever been after the thief made sure to get rid of all evidence he’d taken the truck.

And repost:
Elmhurst Warehouse Robbed For Red Bull (Chicago)

Just three weeks ago, police said the same suspect robbed the same driver, stealing his truck and again, cases of Red Bull.

The men are described as of Middle Eastern descent and between the ages of 30 and 35.

OPINION: The suspect has been very clear about what his intentions were when he went into the pit. He's been very clear as to why he drove the vehicle into the pit.

His actions and intentions do not match "a gentle soul."

Thanks for the update all4one.

Dangerous Holes in Border Security (Is a War Going on in Texas?) (Excerpted)
Eagle Forum ^ | 3/24/06 | Phyllis Schlafly

If you don't have access to Texas newspapers or the internet, you may not have heard the sensational news about the enormous cache of weapons our government recently seized in Laredo, Texas. U.S. authorities grabbed two completed Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), materials for making 33 more, military-style grenades, 26 grenade triggers, large quantities of AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles, 1,280 rounds of ammunition, silencers, machine gun assembly kits, 300 primers, bullet-proof vests, police scanners, sniper scopes, narcotics, and cash.
---
Meanwhile, the news media have shown us pictures of the just-discovered sophisticated 2,400-foot tunnel running from Mexico under our border to a warehouse in San Diego.
---
The Bush Administration whines that it can't (i.e., won't) do anything to implement border security unless its guest-worker/amnesty proposal is part of the legislative package.

When is our government going to protect us from the crime, the drugs, the smuggling racket, destruction of property, the endangerment to U.S. residents along our border and our undermanned Border Patrol?

In charge of protecting Americans against this war is 36-year-old Julie Myers, to whom President Bush gave a recess appointment after her Senate confirmation bogged down because of her total lack of law-enforcement experience.

Her qualifications are her connections: she is the niece of former Joint Chiefs Chairman Richard Myers and the wife of Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff's chief of staff.

Speaking of General Myers:

Gens. Arnold and Myers, who testified to the Commission that same morning, (June, 2004 ) were not held to account for having presented an entirely wrong timeline a year earlier. Now that the Kean Commission has published the new timeline in its final report, these contradictions cannot be swept under the rug.

Either the Kean Commission is wrong, or else NORAD was pushing a flawed timeline for more than two years. Either way, the FAA story still differs from both.

There can be no excuses. Those responsible for dispensing false information must be held accountable, or else nothing in the behavior of government is likely ever to improve.

Instead of accountability, several of the key figures - Gens. Myers and Eberhard, FAA official Ben Sliney - have been promoted since Sept. 11! Yet one or more of them must be wrong about what happened on 9/11.

Dayton said NORAD officials "lied to the American people, they lied to Congress and they lied to your 9/11 commission to create a false impression of competence, communication and protection of the American people."
---
These are major discrepancies that beg for answers and explanations. How were they resolved? Is there a cover-up? Why was there no call for courts martial?

"Clerics want Christian convert's death"

===

UPDATE...

http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/2006/03/010731print.html

March 25, 2006

"If he is allowed to live in the West, then others will claim to be Christian so they can, too. We must set an example...He must be hanged"

So says Said Mirhossain Nasri, senior cleric at Hossainia Mosque, one of the largest Shiite mosques in Kabul, in this AP story (thanks to Ray), which also contains many of the clerics' reactions we posted here.

In the first place, this illustrates the Berlin Wall aspect of all this: they know there is no escape, and don't want there to be an escape, because they know that in that case people will be streaming out.

It also shows what the Bush Administration should be doing. Instead of saying that all this is up to the Afghans, we should set an example -- and say that we will not tolerate anything but full juridical freedom of conscience, and that if that means the Afghan Constitution must be revised to delete the Sharia provision, so be it. But we are not going to waste our arms and blood to prop up a state that institutionalizes the oppression of religious minorities and extinguishes the freedom of conscience.

"Kempthorne Signs Sex Offender And Criminal Gang Legislation"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BOISE -
Governor Dirk Kempthorne Friday signed legislation that he says strengthens the tools law enforcement officials employ to fight the criminal activities of gangs and violent sexual predators.

Senate Bill 1336, the Idaho Criminal Gang Enforcement Act, extends sentences for gang members who commit certain crimes, criminalizes recruitment of criminal gang members, and makes supplying firearms to a criminal gang member a felony.

"As our communities grow, we must not allow gang activity to gain a stronghold," Kempthorne said. "We will work closely with communities all across the state as they face this growing threat. Together we can keep this social epidemic at bay.""

Officials Provide Details of Recent Iraq Operations

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 24, 2006 – Multinational Force Iraq officials have provided details of recent operations conducted by U.S. and Iraqi forces, including today's early morning launch of Operation Scorpion.
Operation Scorpion, which began at 4 a.m., involves searching five villages in and around the Kirkuk area for suspected terrorists, officials said. Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division, supported by the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, are conducting the joint operation.

Iraqi soldiers from the 2nd Brigade's 1st and 5th battalions are systematically moving through the villages, searching for selected targets based on Iraqi-generated intelligence, officials said. On the U.S. side, the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, is supporting operations at each of the five villages. Officials said this is the second major operation developed and conducted by the Iraqi 2nd Brigade in the past two months.

In other operations, coalition forces and the Iraqi army netted more significant finds of weapons and munitions, including four SA-14 surface-to-air missiles north of Balad on the Jabouri Peninsula, an upscale section of Duluiyah. U.S. and Iraqi troops swept the peninsula for five days to disrupt insurgent activities and collect stores of explosives, weapons and ammunition insurgents used to attack coalition forces, Iraqi security forces and Iraqi citizens.

The combined operation was conducted by members of 1st Battalion, 8th Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Task Force Band of Brothers, along with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division.

Iraqi and coalition forces also confiscated nine 155 mm artillery rounds, four 122 mm mortar rounds, 27 rocket-propelled grenades, eight rocket-propelled grenades, 10 57 mm rockets, a .50-caliber machine gun, various types of hand grenades, 50 pounds of explosives and various bomb-making materials.

Elsewhere, about 1,400 Iraqi army and coalition forces kicked off Operation Northern Lights on March 22 to disrupt anti-Iraqi forces and to find and destroy terrorist caches in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, officials said.

The combined operation began with 3rd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, moving to blocking positions by ground. Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, air-assaulted onto the objective to conduct a cordon-and-search operation.

By late afternoon, about 400 soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, discovered five weapons caches. The stashes contained a machine gun, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, three AK-47 assault rifles, 2,200 PKC machine gun rounds, two boxes of gunpowder, an RPG rocket, an Iraqi police jacket, 18 106 mm tank rounds, 400 blasting caps, 40 artillery rounds, 17 pressure plate initiators, 20 radio initiators, and thousands of .50-caliber machine gun rounds. They also detained a suspected terrorist near one of the caches.

At another cache site, terrorists attacked Iraqi soldiers with small-arms fire, wounding one Iraqi policeman and an Iraqi child caught in the crossfire.

Iraqi soldiers returned fire, wounding and capturing a terrorist. Coalition forces personnel treated all of the wounded.

Another cache consisted of seven RPG launchers, 12 RPG rounds, 14 82 mm mortar rounds, two 120 mm mortar rounds, 10 155 mm rounds, a mortar bipod and 2,000 small-arms rounds, some of which were armor-piercing rounds. A suspected terrorist was detained at the site.

So far, Iraqi and coalition forces have detained two persons of high-value interest and 16 suspected terrorists, officials said. The operation, they added, is based on intelligence, including tips from local Iraqis, that terrorists operating in the area are stockpiling materials for roadside and vehicle bombs to prepare for future attacks in Baghdad.

Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained three suspected terrorists yesterday and found another weapons cache south of Baghdad.

A patrol of soldiers from 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained the suspected terrorists after a search of their home yielded a weapons cache.

The cache consisted of an AK-47, a 9 mm pistol with a magazine and box of ammunition, an air rifle, an Iraqi police uniform, a British uniform and hypodermic needles.

More weapons were taken out of the hands of terrorists when elements of Multinational Division Baghdad's 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, discovered a weapons cache consisting of 26 RPG rounds behind a small berm while conducting a route clearance west of the Euphrates River yesterday. The rounds turned out to be training rounds, which are RPG rounds that consist of warheads without rockets.

Elsewhere, other elements of the regiment detained a terrorism suspect after finding a box of blasting caps in his yard while they were conducting a cordon-and-search mission southwest of Hazah. The suspect claimed the blasting caps belonged to his father, who is a member of the Jurf As Sakhr city council and was not home at the time of the search.

(Compiled from Multinational Force Iraq news releases.)
