Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

***All the investment by the US into China has essentially been a bribe to try to prevent them from attacking Taiwan, only time will tell if it ends up backfiring or not. And it could, in more ways than one.***

Our three Japanese foreign exchange students all took classes that involved swords and martial arts pageantry while American students play with text messaging and I-pods. IMHO China will attack Taiwan when it is ready and will not be overtly concerned about their trade balance with the US or how they are perceived by the world as a whole. They have too many more irons in the fire with other countries (many in South America).....

Allow data entry operators to input all the new info (reports, FI contacts, etc.) that occurs from day to day.

Hire a bunch of additional data input operators to add the info from all the various old systems into your new, fresh computer system.

I've seen this put into action by private companies. It definitely can work.

When we give billions of dollars to foreign governments that spit in our face, it annoys me to no end to know agencies entrusted with the security of our country are left to micro-manage every penny in order to survive.

The new anti-America conspiracy revealed
Book untangles web of extremists giving aid and comfort to enemy

The Cold War may be over, but there is more interaction between anti-American radical groups, American "progressive" organizations and hostile foreign governments than most Americans realize, reveals an explosive new book by a retired intelligence officer, who, for the first time, tracks the interlocking connections between them.

In "Radical Road Maps: Untangling the Web of Connections Among Far-Left Groups in America," James Hansen dissects 29 such organizations and reveals their links, their goals, how they operate, why they have been so successful and how they impact American politics and culture.

GLOBAL JIHAD
Counter-terror experts 'take off kid gloves'
Event will assemble top names to help 'wake up' America to threat

Take off the kid gloves and wage all-out war against radical Islam at home and abroad. That's the message organizers of a symposium on terrorism plan to give the U.S. and its leaders through an all-star roster of speakers.

"It's time for all concerned Americans to wake-up, roll up their sleeves and take a stand – talking and disseminating e-mails is not enough," said Jeff Epstein, president of America's Truth Forum and organizer of the one-day event.

Scheduled for April 29 in Arlington, Va., the symposium will feature globally recognized journalists, academicians and counter-terrorism experts "to inform the public of the reality of the threat of radical Islam to every man, woman and child within the United States."

BC Ferry sinks

Snip: Passengers on an overnight B.C. ferry were torn from their sleep Wednesday morning and thrown into a living nightmare, evacuating onto lifeboats that tossed and swayed on stormy seas for more than an hour as the Queen of the North disappeared "like the Titanic."

Ninety-nine passengers and crew were accounted for, saved by the efficiency of coast guard rescuers and the reckless heroics of a local aboriginal band. But B.C. Ferries was unable to find two passengers. George Foisy of Terrace, B.C., said his brother Gerald Foisy and Gerald's common-law wife Shirley Rosette remain unaccounted for.

Gang tried to buy radioactive bomb from Russia

Ship: Terrorists linked to an alleged al-Qa'eda gang which plotted a bombing campaign in Britain tried to buy a radioactive bomb from the Russian mafia, the Old Bailey was told yesterday. The gang was also said to have discussed attacking the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent, a London nightclub, and gas and electricity facilities.

A Luton taxi driver who is said to be a member of the alleged gang was given information while in Pakistan about a "radioisotope bomb", the jury was told.

Reid Threatens Filibuster on Immigration

As the Senate prepares to tackle the most sweeping immigration reforms in years, a top Democrat vowed Wednesday to do everything in his power, including filibuster, to thwart Majority Leader Bill Frist's proposed overhaul.

Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would "use every procedural means at my disposal" to prevent Frist from bypassing the Judiciary Committee. Frist, R-Tenn., has made clear the Senate will take up his proposal next week if the 18-member committee fails to complete a broader bill.

If Leader Frist brings a bill to the floor that does not have the approval of the Judiciary Committee, it will not get out of the Senate," Reid told reporters at the San Ysidro border crossing, a few steps from Tijuana, Mexico.

"Heroin ship sinks to watery grave"
Herald Sun ^ | 23 March 2006 | Max Blenkin

Posted on 03/23/2006 12:32:53 AM PST by Aussie Dasher

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "THE North Korean freighter used to smuggle 150kg of heroin into Australia three years ago now rests on the ocean's bottom, after being destroyed by a pair of laser-guided bombs.

Four F-111 strike bombers flying from RAAF Amberley in Queensland proved dead on target as the 3500-tonne freighter drifted 140km off Jervis Bay this morning. Two 800kg precision guided bombs struck the Pong Su's hull with massive blasts, showering debris over a wide area. The vessel sank quickly into deep water.

The Pong Su was seized off the New South Wales coast in April 2003 after a four-day chase involving Australian soldiers, police and Customs officers after it was spotted dropping a cargo of drugs along the Victorian coast."

"Mullah Dadullah: The Military Mastermind of the Taliban Insurgency"
By Omid Marzban

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On March 12, Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, the former president of Afghanistan and the current chairman of the upper house of parliament, was wounded in a suicide car-bomb attack in Kabul (Dawn, March 12). Taliban military commander Mullah Dadullah took responsibility for the suicide attack, warning that "attacks against American puppets will continue" (Dawn, March 12). In December 2005, Dadullah warned that "we have prepared 200 young men who are ready to sacrifice and carry out suicide bombings against the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan" (Pajhwak Afghan News, January 11).

Mullah Dadullah is a primary spokesman for the current insurgency in Afghanistan. Dadullah is one of the most combative commanders of the Taliban and has, on at least three occasions, lived through serious injuries. For instance, in early February, Yusuf Stanezai—the spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry—stated in an interview with Kabul-based Tulu TV that Dadullah had been killed during fighting in Helmand province (Tulu TV, February 03). Once again, Dadullah somehow survived. Just 10 days after the rumor of his death, Dadullah appeared on al-Jazeera television announcing his link and support to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden (al-Jazeera, February 13).

Dadullah re-emerged on the Afghan scene two years after the Taliban regime was removed from power. The first time that Dadullah spoke on behalf of his ousted radical regime, his name was not unfamiliar to those who lived in Afghanistan during the five years in which the Taliban ruled the country. Most Afghanis knew Dadullah since he was the commander on the toughest battlefields against the Northern Alliance.

Both Dadullah and Taliban leader Mullah Omar are Pashtun, and Dadullah is one of the most trusted followers of Omar."

"The Baloch Insurgency and its Threat to Pakistan's Energy Sector"
By John C.k. Daly

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "While most of the world's media remains focused on insurgent attacks on oil facilities in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Pakistan is experiencing a rising tide of violence against its Sui natural gas installations located in the country's volatile Balochistan province, where the majority of the energy-starved country's natural gas facilities are located. Pakistan, currently engaged in a drawn-out conflict against al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants in its North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), is slowly descending into conflict with anti-government forces in Balochistan province, raising the unsettling prospect of a rising second internal front against militants. A second internal front would drain resources from Pakistan's ability to maintain control over the country and its campaign against al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants in the NWFP and the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA).

Balochistan contains 42 percent of Pakistan's total land mass and is the largest of the country's four provinces. The province is strategically vital as it borders Iran, Pakistan, FATA and the Arabian Sea. The capital Quetta lies near the border with Afghanistan and has road connections to Kandahar to the northwest.

Islamabad also sees the province as essential to its future prosperity, building a $1.1 billion deepwater commercial and naval port at Gwadar on the Arabian Sea. China contributed about $200 million toward the construction cost of Gwadar's first phase, which was completed in April 2004. Chinese interest extends far beyond Gwadar; during a recent interview, Pakistani Minister of State for Investment Umar Ahmad Ghumman said that the two countries had discussed $12 billion in investment projects of interest to China including a 60,000 barrels per day oil refinery at Gwadar (Aaj TV interview, March 6).

India is also interested in Balochistan province as a transit point for a projected $4.5 billion Iran-India natural gas pipeline expected to be operational by 2010. India also discussed with Pakistan plans by both countries to import gas from Turkmenistan via Afghanistan and from Qatar (balochistan.org, March 4).

Balochistan's natural gas production is critical to Pakistan's economy."

"TERRORISM: U.S. OFFICIALS FEAR IRAN IS HELPING AL-QAEDA"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Tehran, 22 March (AKI) - One day after a US daily reported that American intelligence officials believe the Iranian regime is hosting al-Qaeda militants and allowing senior operatives to help plan the network's operations, an Iranian source close to the reformists confirmed the report to Adnkronos International (AKI). "With the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad relations with al-Qaeda have been resumed and strengthened," said the source, who used to work for Iran's intelligence services under the government of Mohammed Khatami.

The Los Angeles Times said US intelligence officials cited evidence from highly classified satellite feeds and electronic eavesdropping as proof that the recently elected Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be forging an alliance with the terrorist network's operatives as a way to expand Iran's influence. The report said the president might also simply be looking the other way as al-Qaeda leaders in Iran cooperate with their counterparts abroad.

According to the source consulted by AKI, around 100 members of the terrorist organisation are living in Iran under the protection of the Pasdaran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Soleyman Abu Gaith, Seif al-Adel, Abdullah Mohammad Rajab, Abdulaziz al-Masri and Abu Mohammed al-Masri are men close to al-Qaeda currently in Iran, according to the United States. The former intelligence official told AKI the list also included "three children and two wives of Osama bin Laden." He also recalled that al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri recently visited the Islamic Republic "to meet with three envoys of Jordan's Abu Mussab al Zarqawi.""

"Terrorists Planned Attack on UK Linked to American"
March 22, 2006
Jim Kouri
by Jim Kouri, CPP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "British citizens were shocked to hear that a terrorist cell linked to Al-Qaeda plotted to bomb pubs, nightclubs and trains in an intense, coordinated terrorist attack in the United Kingdom. These reports emanated from the trial of terror suspects in London’s courthouse, the Old Bailey.

One alleged member of the terrorist cell, Mohammed Babar, a Pakistani-born American citizen who has pleaded guilty in New York to a role in the British bomb plot, is expected to testify against the British defendants.

The terror suspects had trained at terror camps in Pakistan where they formulated the plot after practicing with ammonium nitrate and aluminium powder to create improvised explosive devices.

The terrorist plot to murder and injure hundreds, if not thousands, of Britons may have involved 600kg of ammonium nitrate fertilizer and they planned to smuggle detonators into the UK through Belgium hidden in small radios, the court heard.

Two of the defendants claimed to be under the command of Al-Qaeda’s number-three leader, according to the prosecution. Most of the necessary components were in place and all that remained before their plans achieved their ultimate goal was for the target or targets to be finally agreed upon.

One member of the terrorist cell, Waheed Mahmood, had been working for National Grid Transco a company that operates the high voltage electricity system in England and Wales and the high pressure gas system in Britain. The aim of the plot was to destroy a strategic plant within Britain or to kill and injure citizens of the UK as possible, the Daily Mail reported.

A great deal of preparation had been done in Pakistan but the targets were to be in the UK, according to the prosecution. In July 2003, the group Muslim British citizens travelled to a training camp in Pakistan with tourist visas claiming they were visiting lakes and glaciers. At the terrorist training camp they trained to use explosives."
