SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota, March 9, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota (PPMNS) said it will defy a law passed Monday that bans all abortions in the state.
We will not abandon the women of South Dakota, said Sarah Stoesz, PPMNS President and CEO, according to a release. Our clinics in South Dakota will remain open and we will continue to serve the women and men of this state by providing family planning services, emergency contraception, and safe, legal abortion care.
On Monday, South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed into law the first abortion ban in the United States since the 1973 Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision. The bill, House Bill 1215, passed with strong bi-partisan support in both houses and makes abortion a felony in the state, punishable by up to five years imprisonment. It is to go into effect this July.
Stoesz also vowed to challenge the new law in court. Planned Parenthood will challenge this law in order to protect the health and rights of the women and families we serve, she said.
Meanwhile, a South Dakota pro-life advocate who was instrumental in promoting the law there was the victim of harassment and vandalism. Leslee Unruh, who founded the Alpha Center to encourage pregnant women to choose life, told Focus on the Familys CitizenLink news that her family has become a target from pro-abortion zealots.
Unruh related to CitizenLink how her home has been splattered with eggs and that coat hangers have been left in their mailbox. Her husbands chiropractic office has also been targeted by pro-aborts leaving dead animals on the grounds, with some employees afraid to come into work. She was even told by her favorite coffee shop not to come back.
They said, We have a choice as to who we serve, and we choose not to serve you, she related. They were careful to emphasize the word choice.

The creeping infringement by the Federal Goverment in states' internal matters is unsettling. That said, if many states ban abortions outright, it will create new problems as well. I think the status quo where abortion before viability is legal, but with reasonable state regulation, is okay for now.
You know, I was thinking the same thing. Watch abortion clinics open up just across the border in neighboring states.
Probably not enough business to be profitable. I think SD has like 800 abortions a year. That said, there's nothing to stop women from traveling to neighboring states or Canada if they really want to.
We also have State law. Abortion should never have been made legal. Roe v. Wade was based on lies and therefore should not stand as the law of our land. Anything that can tople this law is fine with me.
Court precedents based on lies like Roe v Wade was should not be honored by succeeding Supreme Court decisions.
to answer coherently, which I failed... sorry...
Being pro-choice... I am pro-choice and pro-life.
With choice is consequence. be it good or bad.
I do believe it is a poor choice to terminate a pregnancy based on convenience. I also believe that a woman/girl who so chooses is not capable in making correct choices all together. Like I stated, if you think it's an expectant mother having an abortion, what is she expecting to be a mother of? You make a choice, you must face the consequences.
And I agreed with you, States should have the final say...it isn't a federal issue.
Shut it down, arrest the perps and toss their asses in jail.
that's what you do to law breakers.
All that organ harvesting and abortions are Beeeg bidness. They won't go down without a fight.
>>>Do rights come from the Constitution or from God? If God, then does He give us the right to murder unborn children?>>>
I am not disagreeing with you theologically, but legally I am. Evil is an opinion based word.
Apparently, you're wrong...
####In essense, if the other branches had the power, they've waived it.####
Roe is outright unconstitutional, but the other branches of government have indeed waved their power. This is largely because of three reasons. 1) Leftists controlled Congress for most of the post-war years. They ideologically agreed with the left-wing power grabs the Court began making after the war, so they let them stand. 2) Leftists have controlled the media, so they likewise have enshrined leftist rulings as "historic landmarks", painting them as sacrosanct and inviolable. 3) Politicians of all stripes would rather have hot button issues decided by the Court. Remember when Arnold said he thought the "gay marriage" issue should be decided by the courts? As the courts have seized unconstitutional power, politicians have allowed them to get away with it to avoid having to take a firm stand on divisive issues.
Well, thats it then. We'll just have to bring in the bulldozers and have Licenses and Inspections knock down their abortuary as a threat and hazard to human life and health.
Let them feel free to break the law and be imprisoned: after all, we have been told for years to "respect Roe v. Wade" no matter how much it bothered us. Now the shoe is going to be on the other foot.
That is what THEY do to lawbreakers (such as to Operation Rescue). Now they will know how it feels.
"Abandon the women of S. Dakota" - we know they abandoned the babies!
Lock 'em up and throw away the key!
