In the 1960s and '70s they burned their bras and draft cards, marched on Washington, founded Earth Day and vowed never to trust anyone over the age of 30.
Today, the baby boomers are doing the limbo, dancing wildly and waving their arms in the air to the unintelligible lyrics of "Louie, Louie."
At least that's what they're doing in Portland, Oregon, at the Baby Boomers' Social Club Friday night dance at the Red Lion Hotel.
"We have a live band once a month, and we do all sorts of different dance styles," says Melanie Pedersen, co-founder with Julie Dahlman of the Baby Boomers' Social Club.
"Julie does a wall sweep," Pederson says. "She says, 'come on gals ... go get the guys that are holding up the walls.'"
"You know, we're in our 50s now, so it's okay to ask the guys to dance," Dahlman adds with a laugh.
Indeed, this mammoth generation -- at once lauded for its commitment to social change and derided for its perceived self-indulgence -- has grown up and is now going gray.
So, how did the "Me" generation do for itself? Have the boomers prospered as much as they could have, or did they miss key opportunities to better their nation and their lives?
It depends on whom you ask.
Some experts say the boomers did not plan well for their future, especially their financial futures, relying instead on the whimsy of a historically rosy economic era to carry them along.

Did I indicate you should have done anything?
That screen name ....... you aren't Webster Hubbell are you?
;-)
I burned my draft card. It was worth a laugh. I did it with three of my friends while we were sitting on a stoop drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. Oh! I forgot. We were also wearing fatigues, were volunteer, enlisted soldiers in the U.S. Army, and were on the stoop in front of our barracks. Could never understand why the army insisted I get a draft card after volunteering.
I believe the correct terminology is "Spongers."
And I think they coined the expression "me time."
You made it sound like Boomers were just waiting for their parents' money, that they weren't productive.
Whatever you are trying to say there...........good luck
ASA --- '69-71
To some degree yes..Many Boomers I know were given everything they wanted by thier parents. But I know many of people that would not dare stick thier parents in a nursing home and will be there for Mom and Dad..I know I will..
No not at all, I am just saying many BOOMERS have parents that are well off as they have saved all thier lives, own property that is very lucrative and it is all going to thier Baby Booming Kids...
LOL ....... quite true.
Maybe that's why all the paintings looked so pretty. ;)
Nah, when I stopped being a child I "put away childish things", and my drug of choice these days is single malt scotch. :)
How odd.... I never saw Twinkies.... we went for the salty munchies. A regional difference, perhaps?
LOL......... I was Army Security Agency, never burned my card...... but your story is pretty funny.
No, I assumed that was what you were driving at and you probably know the meaning of ass-u-me. LOL
No, I am not Webster Hubbell. I had no imagination when I registered years ago and have to live with it.
you can stuff your post #5 up your own, buTT not most of the rest of ours. Claiming ASA means nothing to what you wrote except whatever you think it means......you speak for yourself, not me or most of the rest of us.
LOL ......... apple/carrot juice here.
Delicious.
It's great.
boo
I get so sick of this whiny "the baby boomers are responsible for all the evils in the world" crapola.
You are right on Vietnam Survivor! As always, the bad few make the news and are covered extensively.
BTW, thank you for your service to our country.
I took care of my Dad for the last 10 years of his life (he had a brain disease similar to Alzheimer's).It was difficult, particularly toward the end,but I'm glad I did it. My Dad was so good to all of us that it would have been a sin to put him in a home in his time of need.
Dude. And Dudette. Screaming Yellow Zonkers. Definitely.
I was in college 1969-1973 and I didn't do any of that BS either. I even registered in 1972 as a REPUBLICAN. I never liked smelly hippies.
