Reality check for the much-hyped Origami PC
Ina Fried, for News.com
Bill Gates' vision of an ultramobile PC seemed like a winner: a device with all-day battery life, yet small enough to fit in a pocket and much cheaper than a laptop.
But as devices begin to roll out a year later, reality still trails Microsoft's ambitions. The first generation of devices, being announced Thursday, are bigger, pricier and more power hungry than the software maker had hoped.
Microsoft acknowledges that instead of a mass-market hit riding a wave of prelaunch hype, these devices are likely to appeal only to the most hard-core gadget fans.
"This is definitely our first step in looking at the area of ultra mobile PCs," said Mika Krammer, a Windows marketing director for Microsoft's mobile platforms.
Over the last year, several PC makers have been readying minitablets under the Origami code-name. These minitablets are capable of running Windows XP along with a "Windows Touch Pack" that allows the devices to be more easily controlled using fingertip input. At roughly two pounds, packing a 7-inch screen and costing around $800, Microsoft expects that "gadget geeks" will be most of the early buyers.

Why would I spend 800 bucks for a "gadget" when I can get a full function PC for less?..........
Besides....it prints out unique reports:
Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.
Yeah, that also occurred to me, the blue screen of death.:)
Why would I spend 800 bucks for a "gadget" when I can get a full function PC for less?..........
now how are ya going to carry that around in your pocket to impress your geeky friends?
of course, carrying a 2 pounder in your back pocket may get unwanted results too
Even geeks have limits on useability and size.........
Are you happy to see me or is that an Origami in your pocket?......
Where no man has gone before..........

Nottes via akihabaranews.
it just reminded me of the old story about the guy+swimsuit+potato+down in back of suit
You can get laptops for under $1k now.
I'd love to see this PC miniaturized into a tablet PC
ah, go back to /. ya geek :-)
Seriously, this is the whole point:
"This is definitely our first step in looking at the area of ultra mobile PCs,"
It may be Microsoft.
It may be crap.
But it's only the first step.
I'm salivating thinking of the future.
That's hilarious! Here it is 2006, and I don't even have a conning station on my home system! Come to think of it, I haven't gotten my jetpack yet either.
