Former Rep. Nick Lampson (D-Texas) has nearly $1.6 million on hand and many supporters will soon start pounding the pavement, his campaign manager, Mike Malaise, said yesterday.
Lampson is challenging Rep. Tom DeLay in the 22nd District, in the Houston suburbs. DeLay easily won the Republican primary Tuesday.
Malaise said that many Democratic volunteers had been preoccupied with Democratic primaries in recent months and that now they could focus their energy on defeating the 11th-term former House majority leader.
Those volunteers, Malaise added, would primarily canvass districts.
DeLay is under indictment in a Texas campaign-finance case, and he has also come under attack for links to GOP scandals on Capitol Hill. The ethical cloud that hangs over him has prompted Democrats to say their only hope of picking up the Republican-leaning seat is for DeLay to continue to be the Republican candidate by beating back his three primary challengers.
But DeLays strong showing Tuesday despite some predictions to the contrary, he avoided a runoff, capturing 62 percent of the vote has given the incumbent momentum heading into the general election, fellow Republicans said.
Democrats in Washington say the primary has changed nothing, adding that they have been running against DeLay from the beginning. In an interview in late 2005, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), argued that the 22nd District race boils down to one person: DeLay.

If three Republicans touted by the MSM/DNC/FR GOP bots couldn't defeat DeLay in the primary, what makes you think a Rat will in the general?
They can dream all they want.
Are you going to support Lampson? ROFL
A lot of people here voted agaisnt Delay..
Give me 2G's on Delay, it's a sucker's bet.
I agree. Delay will be fine and most Republicans will be fine though I imagine it will be more because of the lack of their opponents credibility than any excess of their own.
>A lot of people here voted agaisnt Delay..
Because Earle finally found a way at the last minute to con a grand jury into indicting him?
Go Delay...
I understand that in Texas folks catch rattlers by the tail and snap them like a whip till their heads pop off. Figuratively speaking I can wait to see Delay snap earle.
Nick Lampson lost his seat last cycle due to Texas redistricting
Nick Lampson (D-Texas) Enlists Celebrity Money to Defeat Rep. DeLay
backing of the usuals, Norman Lear, Rob Reiner, Barbara Streisand and musician Don Henley. This is according to politicalmoneyonline.com which tracks campaign contributions.

Lampson as well has scraped money up from the chief executives of key corporations. *Andrew Rappaport, a major investor and philanthropist, and his wife, Deborah, donated $2,100 each. Lawrence Tesler, CEO of Yahoo; Arnold Hiatt, CEO of the Stride Rite Foundation; and Richard Thalheimer, CEO of the Sharper Image; and George Zimmer, CEO of Mens Wearhouse, wrote $1,000 checks to Lampson.
Saying they are "deeply outraged" over Sinclair Broadcast Group's decision to air "Stolen Honor," a film highly critical of John Kerry, a California couple have offered the company over $1 million to run George Butler's film, "Going Upriver, the Long War of John Kerry."
The couple, Deborah and *Andrew Rappaport, made the offer in a letter delivered to Sinclair this afternoon.
Andrew Rappaport, a venture capitalist, and his wife, Deborah, a philanthropist, made the offer to buy an hour of broadcast time. In addition, they have offered Sinclair $1 million on top of the advertising revenue Sinclair would lose for showing the program without commercials, and any fines or penalties that might be accrued for pre-empting the scheduled broadcast.
Introduced to reporters as a donator to "progressive causes," the Rappaports have given at least $2.66 million to Democratic causes, including $1.1 million to the New Democratic Network.

Obviously, "a lot" didn't yesterday nor will they in November.
LOL, DeLay keeps that much folded up in his shoe.
Obviously, you dont get it. If any posters from here voted against Delay, that is too much. Im glad Im not influenced by smear campaigns and the MSM..
It won't be near enough, Nickie!
(PS: Shouldn't that read "(D-Moon)"?)
LOL!
Good catch!
How about changing it to "Norman Noway"?
Delay won reelection in 2000 with 60% of the vote. He won in 2002 with 63% of the vote. But he won in 2004 with 55% after outspending his opponent by more than 4 to 1. I'm not saying that Delay will lose, but this is probably the strongest challenge he has ever, or will ever face for his seat. Lampson already has a million and a half on hand, and will have no trouble doubling that before the election. This is a serious situation and one that Delay may not survive.
Lampson is from Beaumont, he does not stand a chance in Houston.
