Why would such an ally of the US be treated as we are treating them? It's dumb.Beyond merely "dumb," it's criminally foolish.

How will throwing us out of the UAE make the Emirs any safer?

Old Leon Panetta hit the nail on the head today. He said that neither party want to govern but both want to win. A pox on both of their houses.

I think you are exactly right. I think this bill, if it passes and is not vetoed, will do terrible damage to our foreign policy. I'm starting to think most of our government would sell their own grandmothers if they thought it would keep them in power just one more year.

Ahem:
House panel votes to block ports deal
Will there be a Presidential veto? Override?

Never thought I'd feel sorry for Bill Frist. The WH has left him high and dry on this.
He's like a flood victim stuck in a small tree while the water rises...
The Speaker of the House has already extricated himself.

Go ahead and call me a bot.
Makes perfect sense, especially when it isn't true.
it's all you have.
Besides we still have Qatar.

In the UAE there is no ground swell of opposition to their rulers as in Saudi Arabia. The vast majority of their people are obedient citizens, they have good standards of living, and they are very much satisfied with their Emirs. I have been there and I know the place very well.

There will be NO veto when the margin is veto proof, as it will be.
What can be done is a joint venture between an American firm and the UAE where anything remotely connected to security is in American hands.

Exactly. They will consider this a slap in the face.

Never mind all that; there are axes to be ground. Gotta get even.

But Al Qaeda would love to pick them, off, if they can. We're also there to protect them from Iran.
I strongly believe we will stay.

And all the hysterics here will jump on that bandwagon.

It isn't even about the Bush Bash Freepers. I don't care to get into that crap.
It's about scratching the back of an ally. If we don't want to do that, we shouldn't whine about the consequences.
The UAE is still going to get paid, this deal doesn't kill it, it just appoints an American counterpart. But if I were the UAE, I'd pull out of the deal altogether and kick the military out of THEIR country.
they are being accomodating to us, we are putting ships of war into their ports, our implements of war and our personnel on their soil, yet we can't allow them to have anything resembling an investment in our country.
Makes perfect sense to me. and if the UAE responds in the fashion I described above, I'll probably be one of the few who aren't exactly surprised.
Kinda sucks.
