I am opposed to the flag amendment and I am a conservatarian.

How do you define a flag? As disgraceful as it is, it's free speech.

Folks are free to do whatever they will with their flag.
That only reflects on them.
My flag is a completely different story.

Voted "No". As much as I hate seeing our flag burned, it is free speech and should be protected. That freedom is what all the veterans before us fought for. It shows other countries exactly how free we are here and for that we are the envy of the world.

Sorry but I agree with them. Disrespectful though it may be, I see no tangible harm in anyone buring a flag. It's merely an expression of their idiocy, and free speech should be protected. We're not prepared to outlaw blasphemy, so why should we outlaw buring a flag? Furthermore, flags are burned all the time once they are retired. It's usually a solemn, respectful process, but the only difference between this and burning a flag in protest are the thoughts (not actions!) of the people involved. In effect, this would be a thought crime.

Don't do polls, but as a conservative veteran, I am opposed to this Amendment. That said, I will risk a day in court to beat the hell out of someone who burns one in front of me.

The Constitution is a document which tells THE GOVERNMENT what it must and must not do.

The proper place (if any) to prohibit flag desecration is federal or state statute.

As a practical matter, not prohibiting people from desecrating a flag simply allows the hate-America-first crowd to voluntarily show us who they are.

Voted "no". While the flag is a great symbol and needs to be protected, so does freedom of speech.

Unfortunately the ones who would burn an American flag are not the same ones who would wrap themself in it before lighting up.

I would not support an amendment to protect the flag because even a jerk has 1st amendment rights. Cloth flags are cheap, nearly as cheap as the free speech of a flag-burner.

I agree w/ you...IMO, we should go back to the original Constitution, & follow it word-for-word, rather than adding new Amendments every time a new single issue comes along.

Check to see if the 14th, 16th, & 17th Amendments were ratified properly (which I have doubts about)--& REPEAL them. Start to pay respect to the 9th & 10th Amendments for a change (does anybody remember those??)

80% of the American economy is corporate, which would disappear if the 14th is repealed. The 17th can go, though.

Any amendment limiting freedom of speech will never get my support.

We would be no better than the Muslims who demand cartoons that offend them be banned. It's another form of political correctness.

My question re: the 14th Amendment is whether or not it was ratified legally in the 1st place....I think there's evidence that proves otherwise--& as a strong constitutionist who believes that the income tax is evil & that our Senators should represent the state governments as the Founders intended for them to, the ratification of the 16th & 17th Amendments should be looked into as well.

Let them burn their own flag -- just require them to wrap it around their own fanny before lighting it...

As for my flag -- I'll take care of defending it, thank you!

FReeped. No amendment. It's meaningless if we don't protect the rights and freedoms the flag stands for.

I voted "No".

I am heartened by the near unanimous opinion of fellow Freepers and discouraged to see that the vote is almost a tie.

The controversy on the 14th is what was intended. One of the writers of the 14th testified that corporations were intended, although there is slim evidence in the minutes.
