Mayor Giuliani's decision to skip a high-profile showcase for potential Republican presidential candidates this weekend is drawing quizzical reactions from some strategists and fueling debate about whether he is serious about seeking the presidency in 2008.
The list of speakers for the Memphis gathering contains almost all the top prospects for the Republican nomination, including the local favorite, Majority Leader Frist, as well as Governor Romney of Massachusetts, and Senators Allen of Virginia, Brownback of Kansas, and McCain of Arizona.
To stoke the presidential embers further, the conference and a leading political newsletter will conduct a straw poll at the event to gauge how the potential candidates are faring at winning support from Republican activists and local officials.
A spokesman for the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Kevin Phillips, told The New York Sun that his group extended an invitation to Mr. Giuliani but he indicated he did not plan to attend.
"It was recently, sort of, politely declined," Mr. Phillips said.
A former parks commissioner under Mr. Giuliani, Henry Stern, said in an interview yesterday that he doesn't see any indication that the former mayor is readying a presidential bid.
"He campaigns for Republican candidates and has given money and so on, but hasn't made the all-consuming effort that is usually required for the presidency track," Mr. Stern said. "There's no visible sign of deploying operatives to other states, building a personal organization."
Mr. Stern, who said he has not spoken to Mr. Giuliani about his intentions, said the former mayor is focused intently on the economic pursuits of his consulting and investment-banking firm, Giuliani Partners. "He is, it seems, keeping his options open, making money. He seems more concerned with his business," Mr. Stern said.
Mr. Giuliani's spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel, did not return calls yesterday seeking comment

And he will be placing this bid on E-BAY
If Rudy is planning on running, he's going about it in an unorthodox manner.
"Is Giuliani Serious About 2008?"
lets hope not
We'll know Rudy is serious about running when he does a hunting photo op.
......The list of speakers for the Memphis gathering contains almost all the top prospects for the Republican nomination, including the local favorite, Majority Leader Frist, as well as Governor Romney of Massachusetts, and Senators Allen of Virginia, Brownback of Kansas, and McCain of Arizona......
Darn!!...I thought it read...Brokeback of Kansas????
Let's hope so.
Maybe the media can keep posting endless Hillary, Rudy and McCain stories so by the time the primaries roll around everybody on the planet will be fatigued beyond belief and nominate real people instead.
Giuliani ping #1.
No. Next question?
Get your mind out of your ___
He will never get the GOP nomination, thank God. He is too liberal.
Is Giuliani Serious About 2008?
God, I hope not.
America has been virtually reduced to a 1 party system. There is another party, but is not American. It is the party of traitors, sociopaths, homosexuals, feminists, pedophiles, abortionists, communists, anarchists and socialists.
There is only one American political party remaining. Americans no longer have a choice for which to vote. Whoever the Republicans nominate, Americans will have to vote for. Which is truly dangerous.
The demise of the democrat party is dangerous for America. Americans need a strong two party system. That is what protects us from the rule of tyrants. Having no choice for which to vote, is tyranny.
Mark Steyn wrote a brilliant piece last year (they're all brilliant, frankly), in which he said that within the Republican party one could find big government types, small government types, deficit hawks, tax-cutters, pro-life, pro-choice, pro-big business, pro-small business, pro-immigration, anti-immigration, interventionists, and neo-isolationists. Everyone from left-of-center to right-of-center can find some expression for their views in the GOP. While that frustrates most of us, it has rendered the Democrat Party completely irrelevant. It would be nice to see the Democrats eventually go the way of the Whigs.
There is no potential candidate with a better chance to win than Rudi. Bush was a "liberal" to many around here.
The MSM's wily reverse psychology strikes again!
I think the author of this article has his pulse on the New York political scene. The NY Sun did an expose on New York governor George Pataki a few months ago in which it suggested that he and his political staff would mount a half-@ssed "presidential bid" in 2007-08 for the sole purpose of keeping his staff and supporters gainfully employed (paid by unsuspecting campaign contributors and Federal matching funds) for a while after he leaves office at the end of this year. I suspect Giuliani is engaged in a similar revenue-producing operation that is going to close shop as soon as political realities make it clear even to his strongest supporters that in a presidential election he'd lose to a pile of rocks.
