We all thought it was funny at the time, but when I look back, it is just sad. Military life is tough on relationships.
Desertion rate in the Mexican Army is near 10%, and they aren't fighting in Iraq!

Title is misleading since it seems to indicate that ALL desertions are from the Iraq Theater, not the overall scope of the US military around the world.
I think most of the desertions are probably far from the war.
My feeling is that if someone is willing to accept a less than Honorable Discharge to get out of the military, then we don't want him there anyway. Do you have a link to that report?

We just now came from the chow hall where #$%! CNN was on the big screen. That moron, Anish What's-His-Face-Lying-Scumbag was giving his daily Iraq-Gloom-and-Doom report (he had to kind of scrape for it today; it's been relatively quiet, but he managed to make everything look dark and hopeless anyway) and he started going on about how the Iraqis need unity in order for their government to succeed. Then, he said
"Unity here has been elusive."
Every one of us at my table reacted. "WHAT???" "Where is he getting THAT???" "What kinds of drugs is HE on??" "Where is he really??"
He was just flat out lying. Like they always do. This was just about 45 minutes ago. I'm sure he'll pour on some more lies on the 10:00 broadcast.
It is, but that one sounded doomed no matter what. For his wife to bring some lover to the pier as he left on deployment to serve his nation was cold and calculated. This wasn't simply loneliness or separation anxiety.

Thanks for posting this. I couldn't remember the total number of personel serving (and I knew someone would post it) but that's almost Zero desertions! The armed forces should be proud I should think. A 99% non-desertion rate must be a record of some type,.

Some of these desertions are Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who are facing Court Martial or NJP for other offences, and they don't want to face the music. My unit had two of these in Jan. They were being prosecuted for fraud, and never returned from the New Years 96.
The high Navy numbers (other than Marine medics there are few Navy losses in the WOT) would seem to very strongly indicate that there is no correlation between combat in the WOT and desertions, assuming that is what the MSM intend to say. In fact, if there are a lot fewer total people in the Navy vs. the Army, the Navy might want to lower the desertion rate by finding ways to get more of their personnel on the ground in Iraq, to boost their morale.
Gee, I wonder when the last death penalty was imposed causing them to feel the need to include it?

Once you are gone 30-days and listed as a deserter, you can be arrested by any law enforcement agency for desertion and returned to military control Normally, most of these people were punished by Article 15, UCMJ, non-judicial punishment, stripped of rank, fined, and then put under some type of Administrative Chapter for getting rid of them and getting them out of the military.
It is usually some type of personal, financial, or failure to adapt problem, rather than what the leftist press wants you to believe that they ran off for anti-war crap. Now, some may have ran off simply because maybe they had been deployed over to Iraq once, twice, etc., and just were not going again. It was not because they were anti-war, but rather they were anti-having to go overseas and serve again, without girl friend or mama to baby sit their sorry asses.
During my career, I had only one man dropped from the roles as a deserter. He decided he needed an extended vacation, but forgot that it included a 31 day month. He reported back late on what he thought was the 30th day – it was the 31st day.
I had the paperwork and MPs waiting as he strolled into my office. He stayed in the area and I had been keeping track of him.

If I remember correctly I saw a film staring Martin Sheen called Private Slovik (sp?) and I believe it was a docudrama stating that he was the last US soldier shot for desertion, the show was set during WWII.
