It happens to the best of women. Here's Rosalind Wiseman, who has spent her entire working life teaching girls to treat each other decently. The script for the movie Mean Girls was based on her 2002 best-selling Queen Bees & Wannabes, a book that helps parents understand the drama and danger in the adolescent girl world. She knows the minefields that lie in gossip, jealousy, disloyalty and cruel judgments, and offers solid prescriptions for changing bad behaviour.
Yet despite her experience, she recently found herself sizing up two mothers who came to see her.
In her view, the women paid too much attention to their appearance, especially their hair. They seemed catty in their conversation, were micromanaging their kids' lives, and were silly.
"All these things came into my head. Why? They are antithetical to what I teach and believe," Wiseman says. "I was still judging these women."
Where does this nastiness come from?
Wiseman thinks it exists because it's supposed to exist. Being nasty to each other is one of the unspoken rules about how girls and women are supposed to behave; one of the rigidly enforced North American standards of what constitutes femininity.
"It's everything you know but haven't been sat down and taught," as Wiseman puts it.
When she judged the two women so harshly, it was as if she was acting out one of the observations she made in her book that girls and women can be their own worst enemies.

You must know my dad.
Very nicely put!!
Great advice. Would you mind if I call on you for advice from time to time? You can FReep mail me anytime.
We actually took motorcycle lessons last year but decided it was not a good idea to buy one since we are in NYC area and it is crazy driving.
Between the two of us, even though 99% of guys won't mess with me, she is way more tough than me.
I was "allowed" to be friends with them because I was cute and dressed well and I knew how to draw the guys. I found other friends because I couldn't stand the way they treated others.
I have also been on the other side and as I grew up I matured enough to be ashamed of myself. I think most of it is about competition.
Not from me, I'd never say such a thing!
Sure glad we're homeschooling our young girls. I can live without this crap.
Oh wow. You have really NOT been paying attention around here.
I remarked years ago that I have seen women in the work place just do some nasty stuff to other women.
Must be some other RockinRight....
My phone number is on my website if you want to call me. Its on the home page.
You should also make sure in your contracts with the subs that you are not responsible for any extras unless signed by you.
Make sure to also get copies of licenses from the plumbers and electricians since if they are unlicensed, your house will never pass inspection and you won't be able to get a CO.
Must be! Because I'm a good boy who never says anything bad...
Very well said! I treasure my female friends! I just don't bother with the petty little girls who find fault in everyone but themselves. Females like that still have a lot of growing up to do. Most women here on FR are very loving, supportive people and I enjoy their great personalities and pearls of wisdom!
I get things thrown in my face by my GF that forgot about long ago and she gets even madder when I can't remember.
Upside down on purpose?
;-)
I'm sorry, I must have you confused with someone else....
I'll ping you to some of the horrible things that have been said on several threads.
I know there are plenty of supportive FReepers out there - but there are some horrendous women haters out there also.
Conservative women have masculine brains and feminine bodies. Liberal women have feminine brains and masculine bodies.
Concise and precise.
