"There are 34 ethanol plants and nine expansions under construction with a combined annual capacity of more than 2.1 billion gallons."

Whatever the cost, it's cheaper than the life of one Marine! Unfortunately, they use more oil than they save.

Does anybody have a handle on how much farm tractor, truck, train fuel is expended to get a gallon of ethanol into someones gas tank?

Ethanol Industry Sets Record in 2005Of course it has. It has bought off more politicians than ever in an effort to mandate the use of its product.

Ethanol, more Alaska drilling (needed), Hybrids, more nuclear power, switch more things that are gas to electric (where possible), more bio diesel.... We will rapidly decrease our dependency on foreign oil. We import a lot less than is assumed and talked about in the MSM anyway, since most of those bogus stats don't take off shore drilling into account even if it's right off our boarder. We import roughly 1/3 of our oil but even that is to much.

Good. If America could just cut 10% of OPEC oil in the coming months it would have an impact on their terrorist supporting butts. It's only unfortunate that we will have to pay more because we can't supplement with ANWR.

Maybe Congress should issue war bonds again. this time the $ goes to fund bio-fuel research and people can put their money where their mouths are. Only 15% of Brazil transportation fuel comes from ethanol. Although the majority of the cars sold there today are flex fuel cars, they only make up less than 8% of the vehicles in Brazil.

I wonder how fast the ethanol industry would be growing without subsidies?

An ethanol plant is being constructed in our county here in Indiana. It won't employ many people, but it's being touted as the cutting edge of energy. The county and city have given them all sorts of incentives.

Saudi Arabia et al are little more than hotbeds of oppression by sheiks and royals intent on putting another 747 in their garage.
If we could save up enough energy to avoid all imports for a year, it would foment government insurrection and coups in the middle east solving the problem of terrorism once and for all.
