Washington, DC [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) announced that the U.S. ethanol industry set annual production records in 2005, producing just less than 4 billion gallons (3.904 billion gallons) and averaging nearly 255,000 barrels of ethanol production daily, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
"These figures represent not only the tremendous growth our industry is experiencing, but also the future growth that will occur," said RFA President Bob Dinneen.
"Demand for ethanol will only continue to grow as refiners remove MTBE from the marketplace and more Americans switch to this clean burning, renewable fuel," said Dinneen. "The U.S. ethanol industry, with 2.1 billion gallons of capacity currently under construction, will continue to expand to meet this soaring demand."
Currently, 95 ethanol plants have a combined production capacity of more than 4.3 billion gallons a year.

Brazil produces ethanol for a buck a gallon. Do you understand that America is not Brazil? LOL!

You apparently are wholly unaware that Brazilian ethanol cannot be imported into the US (because of a huge import duty).
To: Toddsterpatriot
You really don't have the slightest idea as to how ethanol is produced from corn, what it costs or what other products are produced, do you?

1) You can power an ethanol plant with Coal, thats not oil... Do we make fertilizer with coal? What about the fuel to get the corn to the plant or the ethanol to the market?

Maybe Congress should issue war bonds again. this time the $ goes to fund bio-fuel research and people can put their money where their mouths are. Only 15% of Brazil transportation fuel comes from ethanol. Although the majority of the cars sold there today are flex fuel cars, they only make up less than 8% of the vehicles in Brazil.

I wonder how fast the ethanol industry would be growing without subsidies?

Unanswered is does Brazil have any domestic oil to "prime the pump" of ethanol production?
Producing feul for a buck a gallon is a vague stat at best given the unknown cost of labor/capital in Brazil.
Someone can make a fortune buying it in Brazil and selling it here.

George just gave nuclear reactors to the indians, and none for the home folks here, what are we Chopped Liver?

Do we make fertilizer with coal? What about the fuel to get the corn to the plant or the ethanol to the market? 1) We use *energy* to do these and as with any type of energy it can be substituted... eg use BioDesel for the farm equipment and nuclear / alternative energy sources to power factories that make fertilizer.

I believe we turned it away for 55 cents a gallon in 2003. I'm not sure we will do that again. The objectors would be ADM, not the oil companies. If it gets out that we are protecting ADM and pushing ethanol use, and then turn down Brazil, it will be another UAE port type scandal.

Yeah, that fermentation process hasn't been around for thousands of years.

That's it? All you know about energy consumption in American agriculture and grain processing is that fermentation has been around a long time?
To: Toddsterpatriot
We could make ethanol FROM coal, if we just would.
http://www.westernresearch.org/content/technology_areas/alternative_fuels/alcohols.shtml
You can buy one and set it up on your property if you can get the coal.
