GOP picks a fight
Boston Globe ^ | March 6, 2006 | Yvonne Abraham

Law student takes aim at Wilkerson...

She is the daughter of immigrants. She is black and Hispanic. She is a single mother, and a Muslim.

And, to the delight of the state party, Samiyah Diaz is also a Republican.

The law student, who is collecting signatures to oppose state Senator Dianne Wilkerson, the Roxbury Democrat, in November, may have little chance of besting the 13-year incumbent.

But for longtime Republicans, Diaz's candidacy is as much about shifting the image of the Republican Party as it is about winning.

''For the Republican Party, which needs to find some new energy on the state legislative front, supporting a candidate like this will send a message that this party is willing to grow and become more inclusive,"...

Diaz, 28, says labels don't matter.

She is basing her candidacy partly on what she sees as Wilkerson's shortcomings: failure to pay federal income taxes, foreclosure on her condominium, $70,000 in campaign donations and expenses that are currently being investigated by the state attorney general's office.

''She has given the people of this district a bad name," said Diaz... ''She lacks credibility. She has no integrity.

One mistake is one thing, but to keep doing it over and over again, it's not something someone in public office, elected by the people, should be doing. I think it's time for a choice, and I want to be that choice for the people."

I got all excited there, until I realized it's NOT the GOP.
It is one woman on her own...

Are you surprised. The Mass Republican party doesn't support anybody who runs against the democrats.

She has more courage as a student than the whole party.

Sad. Maybe she can get something started.

Now THAT'S an improbable combination.

Anyone who thinks this is a total aberration, consider this: Blacks under 35 self identify as Republicans at about a 30% rate. We now get 11% of the Black vote. If we kick it up to 15%, the rat is finished. That is entirely doable as shown by this story.

Doesn't Wilkerson have a criminal background?

It's not as improbable as you think (heck, i'm a Christian Chinese-American Conservative) for these reasons:

1. Dims have nothing to offer minorities anymore.

2. Dims are so far left of center that the GOP supports the values of the majority of people.

Wow, another nightmare for the Dims - a person of truly diversity and they can't claim her as their own. Now they have to get all racist and -phobic again. Isn't amazing how the white, rich guys of the Dim Party are always railing against the white rich guys, while continuing to push the minorities to the back of the bus (I guess they figure Rosa's seat is open, so why not...)?

She's the sort of person who SHOULD be a Republican, because the Democrats have done nothing for her.

Perhaps she is an Individual and not...gasp...a Victim!

Black, a woman, hispanic, fine.

Single mother, Muslim, not so great.

We need more strong black and hispanic candidates, but we sure don't need Muslim candidates, IMHO.

"Single mother, Muslim, not so great. "

I agree one hundred percent. I have little interest in running candidates who are members of the "religion of peace." I also have little interest in running candidates who can't keep their legs shut and who have children outside of marriage. Let the dems run those kind of people.

But those single mothers are also not the ones destroying the life inside them. I'm delighted to see women birth their babies, in spite of the circumstances.

''For the Republican Party...supporting a candidate like this will send a message that this party is willing to grow and become more inclusive,"...

There ain't no such a thing.
