"...the 21st-century battles for Kandahar and Fallujah were won on wrestling mats and football fields in small towns all over America."

In a related subject, Washington's (the man, not the city) observation is pertinent to our efforts to establish democracy in the middle east.
The Patriot Post
Founders' Quote Daily
"We have therefore to resolve to conquer or die: Our won Country's
Honor, all call upon us for vigorous and manly exertion, and if we
now shamefully fail, we shall become infamous to the whole world.
Let us therefore rely upon the goodness of the Cause, and the
aid of the supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is, to animate
and encourage us to great and noble Actions. "
-- George Washington (General Orders, 2 July 1776)

Great stuff RT
Great article, thanks.
Thank you for that quote, RT. - I intend to use it when debating. 8^)
A truly great man.
Very True.
My cousin just won the heavy weight all-state high school wrestling title in Massachusetts. He's expected to win the New England championship also. 17 years-old, 6-1 265 pounds. Wants to be an MP. This may not happen though, as he is expected to garner several Div I football scholarships. We'll see what happens.
But as his proud cousin, I know he's got the grit we need in the future. I'll be promoted to Major in the US Army in a few months. I'm deployed now for Operation iraqi Freedom. We have plenty of soft Nintendo-Generation soldiers, but plenty of hard ones too.
I was an accomplished high school football player and wrestler. An easy day at wrestling practice was harder (physically)than just about everything I've done in the military, including Airborne School and Air Assualt School. Flight School was tough (UH-60 Blackhawk) but it wasn't physically demanding.
I have a 15-month old boy and another boy on the way. They will not play soccer. They will wrestle, play footbal, and play Rugby. They will also hunt and learn orienteering skills.
My wife, an engineer, accomplished pianist and Johns Hopkins grad, will provide the brains of the operation. Figure they'll crush guys on the playing fields and wrestling mats, then land the women with the piano skills and brains.
How's that for a plan?
TOWNHALL link does'nt come up.
!!!!!!!????????????????????
Sounds like W. Thomas Smith is paraphrasing Wellington's famous quote:
'The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton.'
Sounds like a plan to me. Add lots of shooting.
Start them shooting at a early age. Have them able to feild strip a M4 by the time they are 10 or so and you well have it made.
He even says that's what he is doing.
Read the article.
Right now, they have to settle for, "trust me, son, you'll thank me later." Where we live, soccer is popular because "everyone can play!" No thanks.
It's WAY too easy to raise girly-men today. No tag at recess, sedentary urban lifestyles, and nowadays, these little tykes are fodder for the predators in public schools. Egads.
Good read.
Godspeed to you soldier. Our great Republic is counting on you.
