Zimbabwe has only two weeks of wheat supply left, while citizens are faced with soaring bread prices, Zimbabwe's main milling organisation has said. The cost of bread has risen by 30%, pushing Zimbabwe's inflation rate to more than 600%.
Zimbabwe has been in economic decline since President Robert Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms in 2000.
The government is reported to have put its security forces on alert in case the discontent leads to protests.
David Govere, deputy chairman of the Millers Association, told AFP news agency the scarcity of wheat has meant a reduction in supplies to bakeries.
It's a travesty of justice that the country has been so run down by Robert Mugabe's regime
"Due to depleted stocks, GMB [state-run food distributor Grain Marketing Board] is now giving us 400 tons of wheat a week, down from 600 tons," he is quoted as saying.
Shortages of wheat could force bakers to import flour from South Africa, which could lead to more price rises.
A loaf of bread in Zimbabwe currently costs $66,000 Zimbabwean (66 US cents), having risen 30% in just one week.

The amount of corruption in African governments is staggering...it makes our public figures look like choir boys. I am not advocating a return to "white rule." But it is high time that the usual global do-gooders (Bono, Bob Geldorf, et al.) stop blaming Africa's troubles on the policies of the west and point the finger where it belongs--at African leadership.
This is where Bono tells us we need to raise our taxes and give more to the impoverished.
I wouldn't bet the farm on it (sorry about the pun). The MSM, the NY Slimes, in particular, still won't refute the writings of Walter Durante, who spoke of the "workers paradise" in the Ukraine, while Stalin was starving tens of millions of people to death. To this day, the Slimes defends Durante.
No, they'll figure a way to blame the west, if it's ever reported at all, and ultimately, it will be "Bush's Fault!"
Mark
Lib Paradise indeed...Among Cuba, Venezuela and Zimbabwe, so much to choose from! Maybe I should stay in the lib paradise of Northern VA for now...
The farms were seized just before harvest, with full crops in the field. It's theft any way you look at it. Then they were given to Mugabe's friends and family who couldn't grow weeds.
The MSM would call Mugabe "Right-wing" and "Conservative"

Thank the Lord for College Baseball.
After that happened the intelligent ones followed and that's why today cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam etc. are full of malcontents who aren't fitting in.
Given the birth rates of these former Africans they will greatly increase the population of the European cities and the mortality rate of their offspring will be much lower that if they stayed in Africa.
It would have been better had the colonial powers stayed in power because history has proven that stability existed under colonial authority.
Unfortunately, the continent is peopled by a rabble who can never rise above the present situation due to countries like the USA continually funneling money that winds up in the pockets of the tin-horn dictators.
Yea, but the big "sin" was it was run by whites (gasp)
Certainly seems that the political process is run by the group with the most guns.
Tony Blair should strip the peerage from Sir Robert Mugabe.
Ah yes...ECU...usually a very good baseball team, as well.
