SPRINGFIELD, Ill., March 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

The very foundations of the gun control movement were rocked today by the results of a survey taken by the National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP). In a nutshell, the survey shows that the nation's top law enforcement officers believe that average citizens can be trusted to responsibly own firearms; that criminals ignore gun control laws; and that concealed carry laws reduce crime.

These revelations come as a stark contrast to gun control movement propaganda that asserts that police officials feel that our streets would be safer if law-abiding citizens were disarmed.

Specifically, the survey revealed that 93 percent of chiefs and sheriffs felt that citizens should be able to purchase firearms for sport and self defense; 73 percent opposed so-called "one gun a month" laws; 96 percent believed that criminals ignore gun control laws and; 63 percent supported laws that allow citizens to carry defensive firearms as a means to control crime.

"These survey results are important and timely for the law- abiding Illinois firearm owner," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "The General Assembly is currently considering HB2414 which would ban most of the guns owned by law-abiding citizens in Illinois. The legislature is also considering legislation that would shut down most of the lawful gun shops in the state. The supposed justification for these two bills is that they would result in a safer society. Well, based on the chiefs' survey, it would appear that the gun control movement is standing all alone on that assertion."

"I hope that the Illinois General Assembly is paying close attention to what our top cops have to say," continued Pearson. "It's time for the legislature to stop trying to find ways to harass the law-abiding gun owner and start finding ways to keep criminals in jail and off our streets.

---

Since 1903, the ISRA has been the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership.

...96 percent believed that criminals ignore gun control laws...

Who are the 4% who are stupid enough to believe criminals obey gun control laws? I certainly hope I don't live in one of their towns.

Attemps at gub control ignore the sheer number of wepaons in the USA. I have a forty five pistol that was purchased by my dad in 1922 from an Army officer. The only way anyone could know would be to check if I bought bullets for it.

OUT OF CONTROL US Gun violence.

It is a myth.

Here are the statistics to prove it:

All information. based on Private Firearm Ownership in the U.S. as of 1997

All Firearms # of Guns 200-240 Million

All Firearms Owners : 60-65 Million

Handguns # of Guns 75-80 Million

Handgun Owners: 30-35 Million

1997 All Crimes in US in which Guns were used: 701,369

Murder in which guns were used......10,369

Other violent Crimes in which firearms were used, not resulting in death......691,000

Measure Gun Violence :701,369/60,000,000

( presuming erroneously that some of the 60 million gun owners turned criminal)=1.1689483333333333333333333333333 % of guns are used for criminal violence.

99% of gun owners in the USA are law abiding citizens. We are responsible gun owners and self help defenders. The 2nd amendment is no myth, as the liberal gun control wing nut press would have you believe.

There is relatively little gun violence in the USA.

Stats Source: www.justfacts.com/gun_control.htm

And if you say that 701,369 incidents represent a lot of gun violence, they would do so IF they were manifest within the context of a population that was smaller than 260 million people, or not spread across a continent.

But that is not the context in which we speak, thanks to the 2nd amendment of the United States Constitution.

The fact is that more people die from car accidents ( about 40,000 ) annually in the United States than from gun violence.

Maybe we should outlaw cars and go to bicycles.

I think that crowd is another government arm that was infiltrated by the Bubba crowd and has never been cleaned out.

Yes: but there is a difference between Concealed carry and gun ownership. I still believe only a few are against gun ownership.

Nice statistics. I can't help but wonder how we got down the path of justifying a God given right through statistics. Do you have a statistic on how many people that were killed with guns had no gun of their own? The problem is not an abundance of guns, but rather a deficit, IMHO. If our country valued marksmanhip like it values computer prowess...

Many years ago I spent a very pleasant half day at the downtown Detroit Police HQ registering a .357 magnum revolver because, as I said to the officers, "I didn't want to get prosecuted for killing an unbidden visitor at 2:00 a.m. with an unregistered gun." They were all hugely polite, very friendly, and I later bumped into a lieutenant who was there at the time and we have a very pleasant conversation.

Agreed, but don't you think the numbers are interesting. Less than 1% of those with guns in their hands drive the gun control movement and 99% are patriots.

Now the police chiefs of america have their on statistics.

If anything gun owners have been too slow to put their gun control detractors into the trash can where they belong.

American youngsters want to learn how to use guns. I am a teacher and did a survey. A shooting club is the most popular thing on the list of possible activities. I am trying to set one up now.

Move over computers

The other 4% are in south Florida.

I'm sure you meant Louisiana where they confiscate guns after a national disaster in NO and are sued by the NRA to stop.

Whereas in Florida, citizens are still armed, have a no retreat law, freely carry in their cars or home even without a CCW and shoot dead most would be robbers and home invades on a frequent basis.

top law enforcement officers believe that average citizens can be trusted to responsibly own firearms;

This disputes the liberal logic that people cannot be trusted. However, if they write a law the people will abide by that law because they can be trusted?

I had the same pleasant experience while renewing my pistol permit in (are you ready for this?) my small hometown in Massachusetts. Yes, even in the People's Republic of Teddyland, cops realize that "good guys" follow the laws and can be trusted, while the bad guys (by definition) break the law and cannot.

Police Station Intimidation in South Florida

"Police departments around the country, like here in Tallahassee, give citizens police complaint forms all the time, no questions asked. But walk into a police station in South Florida, trying to find out how to file a complaint, and watch what happens."

Louisiana law permissive on deadly force

“Louisiana has the broadest self-defense law in the country,” said Stuart Green, an LSU law professor who specializes in criminal law.

I take my Concealed Carry Permit test next week.

I don't think I catch the correlation between S. Florida police not giving complaint forms (seen it all last week, not a good thing) and the State's easily accessable CCW permit laws?

Oh wait, there is no correlation!

Try again.

Let me make it simpler for you. Any police force that is that hostile to its citizenry, as the south Florida police obviously are, is no a friend to lawful gun carrying citizens. Hence, the police force there are good candidates to be among those 4% who support gun control.

New Orleans is an anomaly in the state of Louisiana. The soccer mom governor, willy wonka mayor and fascists police commissioner will soon be given their walking papers.

This is no slight on the good people of south Florida.

For years, many Police Organizations supported these un-Constitutional laws.

Many still do. Those that are dominated by the other 7%, the appointed Chiefs of Police of the "Blue Zone" areas. It's just that now our side can point to this survey, conducted by one of those organizations, as evidence that the the appointed Chiefs do not speak for most of the rank and file professionals.

It's interesting that this survery was of members of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, while the Brady Bunch most often is in alliance with the International Association of Chiefs of Police Another pro arms rights police group is the Law Enforcement Alliance of America.

Contrast this IACP statement about the Assault Weapons Ban:

Weapons of this nature serve no legitimate sporting or hunting purposes and have no place in our communities. Unless Congress acts, the firearms of choice for terrorists, drug dealers, and gang members will be back on our streets—where, once again, our officers will be outgunned by criminals.

With the results of the NACOP survey. The interesting thing about the survey result is that it was only part of a much larger annual survey consisting of 33 questions, only 7 of which concerned guns or gun control, making it difficult to argue that it represents only the feelings of already pro-arms rights police who choose to send in the survey questionaire.

BTW, here are the results of the latest NACOP survey of over 22,000 command level law enforcement officers. NACOP Survey (PDF file)

BTW, the NACOP has what appears to be a rather nice musem in Titusville FL. The musem has an attached public gun range. I'll try to check it out next time I go TDY to nearby Orlando.
