Polls should generally be completely ignored. Internal and external validity is highly questionable even in the most "scientific" polls. And regardless, as long as President Bush is in office, public opinion regarding the war will not influence our policy one iota--though negative opinion will certainly make the war harder to win.

Sounds like another biased poll, which oversampled Dems.

I don't really know if that's the case? GW seems to keep shooting himself in the foot. While I totally disagree with the MSM attacks on him, he needs to speak up and he is not. That is what is driving these polls.

But then again, add a couple of questions to those polls like 'would you rather have John Kerry as your President' or 'is the democratic party doing what you would like it to do' and you would see totally different results.

GW needs to get out in front of the MSM, the whacko leftists, and those who want to socialize this country. And he could start by closing the borders!!!!

All it will take is 2 or 3 infiltrators (angry, America-hating young Muslim men from Dubai) to cause another 9/11. I understand quite well, and have thought through many implications of this deal.

Flawed arugment. They already ship thousands upon thousands of containers into the U.S. from their other port operations. If they wanted to ship in "infiltrators" or a suitcase nuke, they would have already done so, since only a few % of containers are actually inspected and they know this well.

It would make no sense for them to spend billions to buy U.S. port operations and then use their own new operations in the U.S. to bring bad guys/stuff in and then have it get traced to them after the fact, and jeopardize their worldwide port business.

No one would want to let them run any ports anywhere in the World if they were implicated in bringing terrorists into the U.S. thru their port operation. That would be an exceedingly stupid business decision, and DFW has already shown by how they operate their worldwide operations that they are not stupid business people.

Once again, naive arguments, not thought through.

Oh no, not them! I'd say go for it if it was morlocks! :)

Morlocks have a tendency to eat the stevadores and the containers. Not so with the Kanamits.

*cough*

Doesn't fly. The media isn't doing anything now that they haven't been doing for the past 6 years.

Cannot agree with that one. After 911 this nation was a lot more together, and the MSM news reflected that - very few BUSH BASHERS on the MSM circuit. Err Amerika only came into being in the last 2 years in time for the election of 2004. While they may not be considered MSM by many, they do have some listeners and it is IMPEACH Bush 24/7. Didn't hear that anywhere over the 1st 4 years of Bush even from the MSM. Now it is a weekly thing even on the antique MSM circuit. I wasn't commenting on the goodness or badness of Bush's performance, only on the media and treatment of him. It has definitely taken a turn driven by the RATs. It is very obvious.

A majority of adults in five key Southern states disapproves of President Bush's job performance...

Someone wake me when these polls begin to balance the number of Republicans vs. Dems instead of weighing them 10-15 points to the 'rats side...and also, when they start showing us there are LIKELY VOTERS in these polls. Until then, it is 'rat CRAP being put out for an increasingly smaller Old Media audience.

It seemed to me that post 9/11 MSM unity lasted about as long as it took for the topic to shift to the potential invasion of Iraq. That changed their tone to body bags and quagmires and they've never looked back.

Perhaps the President has been far ahead of most Americans on some issues but that matters little if he can't effectively communicate with the public...if people think a leader is leading them over a cliff he or his surrogates must explain his thinking in a convincing fashion and defend him against those who seek to damage him. The average Joe who decides elections is not a policy wonk and will tend to think the worst if the President refuses to sell his policies and vision.

It would help to replace Scott McClellan. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he always carries the same expression on his face that my kids had they came home past curfew.

He better start doing what the Stone Age Press wants or his numbers will never improve! Polls are not leading.

As a rule wars lose support rapidly after an initial flush of patriotic fervor and are generally impossible to sustain above a 50 percent approval level for more than three years. World War II was the only exception. Even there, it is likely that sentiment would have soon turned against the war if it had continued for another year with no decisive knock-out punch of the axis powers in Europe or Asia.

President Polk was censured by Congress on account of the Mexican-American War. Lincoln had terrible numbers going into the election of 1864 and was personally convinced he would not be reelected. Wilson saw much of his support turn against him once he committed troops in contravention of his promise to keep the US out of World War I. Eisenhower brought the Korean War to a close against numbers almost identical to the numbers for Iraq. And of course, John Kerry and his ilk did such a great job demonizing the United States over the Vietnam War that Nixon had little choice but to panic US forces out in shameful full-scale retreat.

Bush is doing what great presidents do--continuing the hard worthy task until it is done.

And in any event, the fact that more than half of all Americans might be soured on the Iraq War does not mean they are ready to hand it over to a clueless equivocating dolt and opportunist like Hillary.

Well, here in Texas, I can tell you that based on W's negative numbers - we're not voting for him in 2008!

Stumbled across this in the military early bird. Have to wonder what this does for moral for our men and women in uniform?

This isn't a referendum on the military. People in the South tend to be conservative and deeply patriotic. It's Bush's globalist tendencies and overspending that are at issue here, as well as the "mission creep" that has occurred in Iraq.

Originally, the war in Iraq was sold as "get the WMDs". It turns out now that the intent was to set up a nice shiny model home (democracy) that the neighbors could see and have a reason to change their Islamic ways (idiotic strategy).

Two comments:

a. Sooooo...I gather you believe that the 11% of Republicans NOT included in this poll would have been anti-Bush (BTW, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you - CHEAP!!), and

b. Ostriches do not put their head in the sand. When danger lurks, they run. Like the wind. Like their dinosaur ancestors (about 40 MPH max).
