Virginia County secretly removes Confederate flag from official seal

The removal of the Confederate flag from Amherst County's official seal has upset Southern heritage groups, who contend residents weren't told of the change. County officials acknowledge the image was quietly removed in August 2004 to avoid an uproar.

btw, it has been my experience that EVERY "i didn't serve, but" has at least 10 WEAK EXCUSES why they did NOT serve in the forces.

the ones, who have a legitimate reason for NOT serving, COULD have done something else for the nation, like volunteering full-time in a prison/hospital/asylum/peace corps/vista/etc. instead of doing what they COULD do, 99% did NOTHING.

i suspect that "justshutup" is one of the 99%.

Why would you applaud those who enlist in the Tyranny's military services?

You are deliberately confusing the Union with the GOVERNMENT of that Union. It was the government which changed not the idea of the perpetual Union.

Nope. The founders understood what "union" meant.

Regarding you wild claim that the framers continued a "perpetual" union despite abandoning that phrase, their new potential "union" would consist of 9 members that chose to join that union. The remaining 4 members of their prior PERPETUAL "union" would be abandoned by their former associates.

But if you truly insist, then your definition of union is simply some amorphous assemblage, that has no corporal or legal component. It's just some mystical and munificent touchy-feely, kumbayah society - without any LEGAL means to prevent dissolution!

This issue is settled. Madison's letter makes it clear that the believers in the Self Destruct Buttom have nothing to base their misinformed opinions upon. There never was a time after 1776 when the Union ceased to exist. It is just as perpetual as ever.

Now lets hear the arguments alledging that "perpetual" really didn't mean perpetual. Those are real howlers.

Plenty of Union soldiers served honourably and deserve commendation for service under Lincoln.

There never was a time after 1776 when the Union ceased to exist. It is just as perpetual as ever.

5 states declared their independence PRIOR to 4 Jul 1776. New York did NOT assent to the Declaration until August 1776 [see yesterdays post on the subject]. Now by definition "union" would mean that the states acted in concert, together, in unison, but facts prove otherwise. 5 of 13 states acted INDEPENDENTLY of each other, followed by 7, followed by 1 straggler, is NOT and will never be indicative of unanimity!

Now lets hear the arguments alledging that "perpetual" really didn't mean perpetual. Those are real howlers.

Articles of Confederation:

Articles of Confederation and perpetual Union between the States of
New Hampshire [that's one],
Massachusetts bay [that's two],
Rhode Island and Providence Plantations [three],
Connecticut [four],
New York [five],
New Jersey [six],
Pennsylvania [seven],
Delaware [eight],
Maryland [nine],
Virginia [ten],
North Carolina [eleven],
South Carolina [twelve] and
Georgia [that makes thirteen].

US Constitution

Article VII: 'The Ratification of the Conventions of thirteen nine States, shall be sufficient for the Establishment of this Constitution between the States so ratifying the Same".
Now in the land of the sane, NINE is less than THIRTEEN. Your bizzaro world might be different. Now if a PERPETUAL union of 13 members is shrank down to a perpetual union of 9 members - meaning 4 members left sitting in the ash heap of history - then that union of 13 has vanished.

How far behind is the Farber quote? "Mystical bonds of union" my ass.

Funny how many guys want to tell us we're mystically bound, and then inform us that they're the high priest. Like our jerkoid friend with the bullyrag username.

I prefer Jefferson: "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility toward every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

This means you, JSUAFI.

He was not speaking of putting down insurrections in the Federalist now was he? And the federal government is EXPLICITLY given the power to put down insurrections in the Constitution now isn't it?

Bully someone else, chump, your arms aren't long enough.

Yes, the federal government is given the power to put down insurrections. Now quote the Constitution and quit playing games: You are on the wrong board, to try that one. We know what the Constitution says. Now quote the rest of the clause, including the part about the call by the State in which the insurrection occurs.

It's their call, not Honest Abe's. Always was. Lincoln broke the law and broke the Constitution.

Lincoln whined about Taney's opinion in Merryman, about "all the laws but one". But Lincoln broke just about all the laws, and preserved very few of them when they got in the way of his Plan for the South.

And all so that Mrs. Vanderbilt could offer her dinner guests sapphires and rubies in their desserts as party favors.
