Freepers cirque23, firebrand, and AliVeritas were among the crowd at the demonstration today in support of freedom at the Danish Consulate. Another freeper was there who forgot his screen name but was part of the DC demonstrations outside Cheney's house in 2000. Juliej could not get out of work until 1, so she missed it, but she did try to stop by.
We started assembling at the northwest corner of 47th and Second Avenue. A guy with a Viking helmet, another guy with a Lego sign, a guy with a Danish flag painted on his face, lots of people with signs and flags and T-shirts, a woman handing out little squares of Havarti--were all there. The only reporter I spoke to was from New York Press. I told him to get rid of the pornography but he was nice and interviewed me anyway. (Famous last words?)
The police discovered us after about 15 or 20 minutes and moved us to the diagonal corner, the southeast corner of 47th and Second (the western end of Hammarskjold Park). There were rumors that Hitchens was going to be there but I guess that's what they were: rumors only.
I was handing out a list of Danish products, but it kept getting expanded by people who were there. One guy had a big sign with Danish product names on it, so I copied some from him too. The list appears below.
The organizing blogger is Snarksmith. I'm not sure of the guy's real name, but I hope he will show up here and take a bow. You might want to take a look at his website. This is where cirque23 saw the demonstration announcement.
It was quite cold, and we were glad to break up a little after 1 p.m. It was a very nice, illustrious-looking crowd, all true lovers of freedom.

A huge thank you from this freeper.
We may have to start with changing the minds of Freepers to support the Danes. According to this one http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1589195/posts?page=20#20 Danes have never see indoor plumbing or a refrigeratory in their lives.
rolling eyes..........
I don't think that's what ladyjane meant. She meant people other than the Danes, if you look closely.
DIESEL SALUTES in the keywords refers to the Teamsters who kept honking for us as they went down Second Avenue. Pretty savvy bunch.
The cartoonists were Danes correct? Check again.
It depends what she means by "quota." Yes, of course the cartoonists were Danes. Does she mean "our Danish quota"? If so, I stand corrected.
LOL! It's always nice to have the support of people driving by.

DANISH CONSULATE RALLY: Reader Kevin Patrick sends this report from New York:
About 150-200 People in attendance at any one time (some of us are supposed to be working). Friendly crowd handing out danish cheese (even in relatively cold weather). About a half dozen danish flags and even more signs in support of the Danes. Healthy discussions/debates going on as well. Couple of people vocalizing their attendance on behalf of friends serving in Iraq and elsewhere. Police in attendance also managing crowd in an orderly manner. All in all a good showing in suuport of the Danes.
Manga tak, firebrand.
(thank you very much in Danish)
Skal (Cheers)
Dinah
