Katrina Tape Transcripts Show Media Hack Job For those who want to see the transcripts themselves of the video conferences, the New York Times has them for the August 28th and August 29th briefings. The transcript for the 29th makes one garbled mention of the levees around New Orleans (page 6). After making the point that the storm surge would cause the greatest devastation in the Gulfport area of Mississippi, going as high as 21 feet, Max Mayfield then turns to New Orleans:

MAX MAYFIELD: ... The rest of the track we have 10 to 15 feet, in a few areas up to 16 feet. At least glimpsed it out, and Louisiana can talk a little bit more about this than I can, but it looks like the Federal levies [sic] around the City of New Orleans will not have been (incomprehensible) any breaches to. That certainly doesn't sound like a warning -- and this was on the day the levees broke. That transcript clearly shows that the conference considered the storm surge and precipitation runoff to be the major threats of flooding in New Orleans. The possibility of breaches, even on the 29th, had been discounted.

The transcript from the August 28th meeting talked more about levees, but in the same vein, and this time no one mentions the word "breach". Starting on page 5, Max Mayfield again talks about the dangers of Lake Pontchartrain, but only in the context of the winds created a surge that could overtop the levees:

One of the valleys here in Lake Pontchartrain, we've got on our forecast track, if it maintains its intensity: about 12 1/2 feet of storm surge in the lake. The big question is going to be: will that top some of the levies? And the currrent track and the forecast we have now suggests there will be minimal flooding in the city of New Orleans itself, but we're -- we've always said that the storm surge model is only accurate within 20 percent. If that track were to deviate just a little bit to the west, it would -- it makes all the difference in the world. I do expect that there will be some of the levies over top even out here in the western portions where the airport is. We've got valleys that can't overtop some of the levies.

The problem we're going to have here -- remember, the winds go counterclockwise around the center of the hurricane. So if the really strong winds clip Lake Pontchartrain, that's going to pile some of that water from Lake Pontchartrain over on the south side of the lake. I don't think any model can tell you with any confidence right now whether the levies will be topped or not, but that's obviously a very, very grave concern.

Again, the entire briefing that related to levees only focused on the effects of the wind on Lake Pontchartrain and its effect in pushing water over the top of the levees. Mayfield never even addressed the possibility of breaches in the levee walls. And in fact, the storm track shifted eastward in the final hours before Katrina hit, which eliminated much of the predicate for even the worries Mayfield expresses in this transcript.

The media got it wrong yet again on Katrina. The notion that the experts warned of levee breaches is nothing more than a hack job initiated by the AP and continued by the rest of the Exempt Media even after the source material has proven it false.

The first month after Katrina hit it was very important news - but after that the hurricane victimes need to get on with their lives. Katrina victims don't need to wallow in their self pity for months and months because the newsmedia decides this story will go on forever because they have a Bush Bashing Agenda. The Katrina victims are being used by the media to further the Democrat agenda to blame Bush for everything that goes wrong in this country. The blame is on Mayor who let this happen without evacuating the people a day before. Nagin saw dollar signs and decided he was going to reap the disaster rewards. He knew this was coming - the weather services were predicting it days ahead of time. During the Mardi Gras parade he was riding a horse like some sort of dictator waving at his loyal and frightened subjects. Made me sick to see those pictures.

"The drive by media doing their usual."

Rush has been using the term "drive by media". I actually think it's way to soft. Blitzkrieg Media is more like it. Day after day, on slot after on slot.

President Bush was sending subliminal messages to Nagin. Hide the keys to the schoolbusses so they can't be used for evacuation.

Messages to BlankO......don't activate the national guard. Let the people starve in the convention center.

Dontchaknow that was the plan all along.

To make the chocolate city turn white.

Katrina is all Bush's fault.

These previously secret videos prove he knew all about Katrina ahead of time and kept the rest of us in the dark, especially the residents of New Orleans. Meanwhile, he ordered FEMA to push aside the governments of New Orleans and Lousyanna and stopped the sending of food and water to the Super Dome so Blacks would starve!

This is a much more interesting and important news story than Able Danger and it highlights once again how utterly corrupt and malevolent the Bush/Cheney Administration is and why they should immediately be impeached! /sarc

Well, except that when you moved in, there was an old footed tin tub in there and you replaced it with a modern one.

Then one winter, while you were on vacation, the pipes froze in your house and all the tile crumbled and the bathtub split in two. You put in a claim with your insurance company and they gave you a check for $20,000 to repair your bathtub.

You bought a hot tub for your outside deck, on sale for just $2 grand. You got some adobe mud and packed it in the crack in your bathroom tub and went to Las Vegas with the rest of the money.

When you left the tub filling while answering the phone, the mud washed out and breached. You had a flooded bathroom, hallway, bedroom, living room, house.

How long did it take Fema to get to New York after 9-11?

I don't know when FEMA got there, but the mayor of NYC headed towards the disaster and was on the scene taking charge within minutes of the first plane hitting. The building literally came down almost on top of him.

In the same situation, I can envision Nagin trying to hot wire the nearest unused schoolbus and heading for Canada.

For the sake of argument - what if they had mentioned breached levees - not just overtopped levees in these briefings? When the briefings occurred there was concern about a Cat 5 direct hit which didn't happen. And take it further. If they were discussing breached levees and such a catastrophe - why weren't all of the people evacuated earlier? This makes the locals look even worse.

First the media destroyed Brownie, now they've resurrected him for their own end.

Way back Brownie resigned, I told everybody that was precisely what was going to happen.

And look how everybody complained about Rita, when the evacuations were ordered well ahead of time, and you had all of the traffic jams and people running out of gas on the highways.

Exactly.

As somebody said during the Katrina hearings, first the press and the politicians demanded his head, but now they are busy trying to sew it back on!

IMO, he's in major CYA mode and is stabbing Bush in the back.

What was Bush supposed to do - go down there and physically hold them up himself.

This is what I cannot figure out. What COULD he have done?

If you want to get a good work out on the treadmill as I did this morning then turn your TV that is on the treadmill to any one of the Liberal channels.Especially this morning..Man I got the speed up to four I was so disgusted..I soon turned the thing off and went about my chores..I won't watch any news shows today..it just makes me see how stupid the Dem's think the American public is..

I wish this would just go away..I am so sick of all the liberal crap about N.O.The Mayor and the Governor were to blame and stop trying to pin it on anyone else..How stupid of the Dem's to keep on about such stuff..The people that left N.O. don't seem to care..A great majority are living off other states..but I have to admit there are some that are working and supporting their family's..The other should be back in sin city rebuilding their city..Oh well that will be a cold day in H--- before that happens..

And I heard last night that Brown himself said the President asked tons of question.

All of a sudden it's get Bush at any cost mentality with the media and it's one "hit" article after the other and they are continually getting beaten down.

How soon before the public say's enough or how soon before they just plain ignore all the "hit" pieces?

Thank God for the internet and talk radio. I heard Tony Snow call them the "truth media". The MSM pumps up a story and it is up to the bloggers and talk radio to get to the facts. One example is the bogus CBS poll.

When I want to hear the real story I go to Fox news or conservative radio. When I want to get liberal political propaganda I go to CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS.
