An emergency alert has been raised at the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant in Salem Township in Luzerne County, but officials said the public is not in danger. According to PPL officials at the plant, there was a release of halon in one of the non-nuclear structures at the plant. Halon is a fire suppressant. Officials at the plant said no flames were present, but there was a burnt smell detected.
The Luzerne County Emergency Agency also responded to the incident, and local E.M.A officials are on alert. Officials said there have been no evacuations. For any questions, residents of Luzerne County can call the rumor hotline at 1-800-821-3716. In Columbia County, residents can call the rumor hotline at 570-389-5738.

Heh heh, I was gonna kinda let it drop, but since you mentioned "Niagara Falls" ... slowly I turn, step by step, inch by inch ...
If you google "slowly I turn" "Niagara Falls," you'll find the *rest of the story* that a reporter in Niagara Falls delved into. Evidently, if you live there, you get the routine just about every time you meet someone from somewhere else.
It is variously attributed to both Abbott & Costello and The Three Stooges, as both had it included in their theater-length movies in the same year back in the 40s. However, it does go back to burlesque and vaudeville - and right, it did start with Niagara Falls. There is even a guy who claims he first performed it, credited in that article.
The "Susquehanna Hat Company" routine of Abbott & Costello's was separate, but woven into it on their TV show, evidently.
I tried to find some reference to it as to the Danny Thomas show, "Make Room for Daddy," where I know I heard it more than once. I believed that it was something "Danny" did when he wanted to strangle Uncle Tonoose (Hans Conreid) for something ridiculous he was doing OR it was something Uncle Tonoose did to Danny for the same reason.
Uncle Tonoose had been in vaudeville (in the TV show's backstory) and they were all from Toledo, OH. Lots of references to their Lebanese community there on this show. Well, the trigger word for them was "Cincinnati," but pronounced "Zinzinnati" by Uncle Tonoose - as it was evidently their rival Ohio town, as it would make him "see red" (or "Reds," I guess!).
If "Cincinnati" came up in a conversation, here it would come ... "slowly I turn" ... and the little kids on the show - Rusty and Linda - would run screaming from the room when the man started making menacing motions towards them or someone.

Having spent several great years working for PP&L at SSES (Susquehanna) I can tell you the plant staff are the best--the training cycles carried through (no exceptions), the professionalism of everyone there--this as any emergency will be handled perfectly.
It's a great company and a great plant.

Plenty of them. BTW, there is uranium in the very dirt of your own back yard. No big deal. Perfectly safe. Also I do not "fling" info around haphazardly.

PPL Takes Blame for Nuke Plant Alert Confusion
The nuclear power plant near Berwick was under an alert Wednesday night.

A Newswatch 16 investigation has revealed that local emergency crews were left in the dark Wednesday night when an alert was declared at the PPL nuclear power plant near Berwick. Now PPL says it was the company's mistake.
Wednesday night the company issued an alert at the plant but there was confusion among emergency crews over what was really happening. An alert is the second lowest of four levels of an emergency at the plant. A fire suppression system went off but there was no fire.
"We had no idea what was going on and that was a concern and we're sitting around the table saying what do we need to do here," said Robert Kishbaum, Salem Township Emergency Management Director.
There was confusion with officials who are in charge of protecting the public during an alert.
"We had no idea what was going on. We had no idea if there was a small site release if there was a major problem with the equipment. We had no idea," Kishbaum added.
He and his counterparts in other communities were told by Luzerne County emergency officials to go to a page in a manual and that would explain the problem but the manual is outdated and the section the county was talking about wasn't there.
"Messages coming down from Luzerne County we're to refer to this action level in the manual and it wasn't in there so there was confusion and concern here," Kishbaum said.
"Do we want them to have the most accurate information? Absolutely and once we realized that was a problem last night we got that information out to them," said Luzerne County E.M.A. Director Steve Bekanick.
PPL, the plant owner, has had the new manuals for a month but never sent the information to the communities.
"We'll be taking all the things that happened during this drill and looking to learn from this. We can always do things better so we'll be looking for ways to do that," said Joseph Scopelliti of PPL.
The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission is investigating why the fire suppression system went off at the facility. There is no word if it will look into the confusion caused by the emergency alert.

Your welcome. I had to laugh this morning the WNEP bimbo took a ride to the neighborhood that is right behind the plant. She was asking if they felt they should have been notified. Well the older gentleman was laughing at her, he said "no not really". It was not a life threatning situation and yet this bimbo has to make it look like it was. I was waiting for them to Blame Bush. This is a news station owed by the NY Slimes. I am 10 miles from the plant.
I have PPL stock. My dad worked for them from 1946 to 1980. He worked in Harrisburg, Shamokin Dam, and Washingtonville.
I watched the history channel yesterday since I was home due to the snow. They had the story about the Nuclear Plant in Harrisburg the 1979 incident. Scary, I had no idea Dick Thornburgh was the Governor at the time. I am a native New Yorker. Wasn't Thornburgh in the Regan Administration?
More people have died in Teddy Kennedy's car than in commercial nuclear power plant accidents in the US.
PP&L also manages some of the nicest campgrounds I've ever seen! We used to stay at one that was south and west of Lancaster, on a tidewater area of the Susquehanna that was just lovely!
