Vanity: What is DPW really purchasing?
na | 2/29/06 | me

What do phrases like "control of ports" really mean? Consider this article which purports that in New Orleans 2000 feet out of 440 miles of port frontage would be owned by DPW.

I also heard Rush say the other day that something like 10 out of 3000 facilities (docks? slips?) would be under the control of DBP.

Similiarly, this article seems to indicate that the entire Port of Miami will not be sold, but rather "part of one of the operators at the port"

They are managing some of the terminals within some of the ports. Period.

They own NOTHING. They are buying NOTHING, except the contract from a British company to load and unload cargo.

I have no idea why this is so difficult for some people to understand, unless they are refusing to understand, or, completely incapable of understanding.

Per terminal its about 2000 ft of space to anchor ships and load and unload to the dock for container ships. There are also some much larger and some smaller.

I was listening to Rush on my MP3 while I was working out.
He hit everything right on the head...ignore the Tsunami effect. Everyone is getting too hysterical.

Just follow the money trail.

It's all about the Longshoremen Union and politicans who take campaign contributions from them. It not about National Security but Monetary Security.

US used to be in the port operating business but not anymore. Overhead is too expensive now. Too many lawsuit hassles and Union mandates. China for example is state owned and if you want to sue the company it's SOL.

All our port operations are run by foreigners.

"What is DBP really purchasing?"

It is purchasing the current companies that run our American ports. When they purchase these companies, the Arabs will be in control of our ports. It's a huge security issue and the Arabs must be stopped from purchasing these ports-servicing companies.

It's a no-brainer, really.

"They own NOTHING. They are buying NOTHING, except the contract from a British company to load and unload cargo."

That's not true!

They are buying the net asset of the company and the present value of its future earnings. They are moreover buying goodwill, and a host of other intangible assets such as trademarks and patents.

I think that DPW will be buying cranes and assets as well as a lease. All the port provides is pretty much a cement slab by the water.

Then why do you still think they will be controlling the port?

Because it's a no-brainer that the Arabs will be controlling the ports.

control of our ports

Everything I have read (other than hyperbole such as yours) indicates that they are buying a small piece of space within much larger ports. NOT the entire port.

All the port provides is pretty much a cement slab by the water.

When you say "port" do you mean, the entire 440 miles of commercial waterfront space in New Orleans, or some number of (2000) feet of dockspace within a 440 mile stretch of ocean front property making up the port of New Orleans.

Lie.

When they purchase these companies, the Arabs will be in control of our ports.

Another lie.

It's a huge security issue and the Arabs must be stopped from purchasing these ports-servicing companies.

And exactly who would believe a word you say after you've been proven a liar on your first two statements?

It's a no-brainer, really.

I'll agree to that; you have no brain.

And I still say you are a troll.

That posted has been repeatedly told the facts of this deal -- yet he continues to post that drivel.

That about tells you all you need to know.

And I think he's a troll, if you care what I think..........LOL.

You may want to read this which discusses what it means to "operato a port." You're unlikely to get the straight story from the partisans here. Which is unfortunate.

Am I not phrasing the question correct, or does no one really know the answer?
