Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay faces a stiff re-election battle in Texas. Some political analysts say he`s not even a safe bet to win Tuesday`s Republican primary, in which he faces three challengers.
If he survives, he will square off against former Democratic Congressman Nick Lampson in November.
DeLay, once one of the most powerful politicians in Washington, is fighting a criminal indictment and links to the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.
DeLay resigned from his leadership post in January.
He has denied doing anything wrong and says the allegations against him are politically motivated.
His rivals say DeLay`s tough tactics are simply catching up to him. For example, one of his top challengers in the Republican primary is Tom Campbell, who used to support DeLay.
Campbell says he doesn`t agree with DeLay`s, quote, "win at any cost version of slash-and-burn politics." Lampson, a Beaumont native, calls DeLay a "bully" and says voters have gotten tired of his style.
No hard feelings but I disagree. I think Tom Campbell is the better choice for the conservative movement of a respendican free traitor like Delay.
He is not a free traitor Respendican like Delay. He may end up being a disapointment, but at this time and this level I will roll the dice.
And as for issues check his website. I did.
Why not take your talking point: "Tom DeLay is a Free Traitor", make it your tagline and be done with it?
And you are correct, no hard feelings. You won't win the primaries and will sit the general out. In the end, DeLay goes back to Washington.
What is a Free Traitor? I have never heard the term.
Just the fact that you are so hostile & ready to hurl insults at Delay sends all kinds of Red Flags up for me.
Maybe, maybe not. I know of several people who voted for Delay last cycle who will not this time for whatever reason. My father and my brother's father inlaw for example. Delay may win, if he wins the primary. But I live in his district and I know he will have a fight and if he wins it will be a narrow run thing.
I live in his district too. I now know of four people who voted against DeLay.
I know many more who voted for him.
But hey! You've got the entire MSM on your side, so how could you lose, right?
I frankly don't care what accusations the DNC/MSM make. I only care about a candidate's behavior.
The local media are preparing us for a DeLay win with 60% of the vote. I sense this race is breaking hard and fast in Campbell's favor. Remember, Campbell polled only 6% in January.
Here is my current thinking:
Outcome: Campbell wins outright
Chances: As close to zero as it can be
Spin: Republicans, unlike Democrats, can clean their own house. Campbell safe in general election.
Outcome: DeLay and Campbell in runoff
Chances: 20%
Spin: Media goes crazy with Campbell's performance. Spin suspended during wild runoff race. Dems, who have been quiet, may monkey with GOP runoff.
Outcome: DeLay wins with 50-60% of vote
Chances: 30%
Spin: Voters in TX22 disapprove of DeLay's character. Lampson has good shot in general. GOP horrified at prospects.
Outcome: DeLay wins with 60-67% of vote
Chances: 30%
Spin: Gray area. Dems preen that GOP in danger. GOP convinced that DeLay can bring voters home in general election.
Outcome: DeLay wins with 67-75% of vote
Chances: 20%
Spin: DeLay generally considered safe for general election even though he'll be lucky to win 50% of vote.
Outcome: DeLay wins with more than 75% of vote
Chances: As close to zero as it can be.
Spin: DeLay safe. Even if DeLay wins 75% of vote, his opponents will have performed 25% better than any time in recent history.
It would appear Mr Delay could use a $100 donation from one of his fans in Ohio..(me)

Integrity in public office.
Your choice. Not mine.
Dice Rollers, Fence Sitters RINOs?
I just am telling you what I hear.
It seems as if you are simply a Delay basher. As I said, I'll send my $100 to Tom & hope the Right (pun intended) man wins.
That's cool. Me too.
And BTW, I'll vote for your guy if he wins. Anything to keep a Dim out.
(But your guy isn't going to win.)
3 Choices:
1. Nick Lampsom, rat
2. Delay, respendican, free traitor
3. Tom Capbell, conservative
I support Tom Campbell
If I'm a DeLay basher, how do you explain DeLay's false statements in the Blankenship deposition? People who claim DeLay has integrity don't ever mention that. They can't explain it. DeLay made a false statement under oath.
If suggesting that someone who makes a false statement under oath lacks integrity makes me a DeLay basher. I guess I'm guilty. I believe that President Clinton lacked integrity for making false statements under oath. I was called a Clinton basher, too.
I believe that if Republicans don't hold their own elected officials accountable for poor behavior, then we're no better than Democrats.
I already voted for Tom DeLay in the 2006 primary. My wife also voted for Tom DeLay. Mr. S. Side, how many votes do you personally have?
Look, this country isn't exactly going to return back to its constitutional roots overnight. At least DeLay understood the basic concept that you have to defeat the DemoRats first AND THEN implement a strong conservative agenda, instead of compromising and being feckless all the time. He was one of the few Republicans who had the backbone to stand up to the MSM/DNC machine, and with him gone, the GOP Congress is rudderless.
