March 1, 2006: Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has been making noises about running the Dutch out of nearby Caribbean islands, areas that the Netherlands have owned for centuries. In response, the Dutch are trying to orchestrate a suitable, and scary, message for Chavez. The Dutch are trying to get the United States to make a port call with an aircraft carrier, and its accompanying warships, at one of their Caribbean islands. This would be part of a series of "messages" that they're sending to Venezuela. An additional "message" is an invitation to the Venezuelans to take part in a navy/marine exercise that the Dutch are going to run in the Caribbean later this year.

If I had to bet on the Dutch or the French against Huey, I'd pick the Dutch.

Do you think it would be proper for us to ask if they want to go "Dutch treat" on the operational expenses for a carrier battle group for the duration of the exercise?

GtG
France could help!! France is busy towing that defunct aircraft carrier back to the home country for destruction - why don't they tow it to the Carribean instead and anchor it there to intimidate Chavez??? ha ha ha.....
This is the Van Galen. Supposedly, they might be getting David Lee Roth back on board again....
Actually, Hugo has put a bug in the ear of the Argentine President about the Falklands. Despite the 1982 "war", Argentina still claims the Maldive Islands as their own. They've built up their air force to about twice what they had in '82 and have been probing the radar screen set up by the British. They've also been apprehending British fishing boats which they say have strayed into their territorial waters.
We live in interesting times.
And we should ask about their help in Iraq-Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world in winning the WOT.
No they don't. Very few countries do. Other than the US only, United States, United Kingdom, France, India, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Italy and Thailand. Spain, Italy, India, Thailand, and the UK only have Harrier Carriers. The Russians only have one CTOL carrier, and I don't know if it's operational.
As I recall from reading about the Falklands Island War, the Argentinian Air Force was the only branch of their armed forces to show any fighting ability or spirit.
I still remember some older footage of Argentine A-4's flying real low (weaving and turning, trying to do their bomb runs) amongst the British ships anchored in Falkland Sound.
Islas Malvinas, not Maldive Islands, which are in the Arabian sea, not the South Atlantic like the Falklands/Malvinas.
No.
They have some quite new and shiny ships - but they are a bit under-equipped to defend their islands.
4 submarines some old fregates and 4 new fregates that are more or less destroyers by their role.
But they are embedded in several multi-lateral defence treaties. Like NATO.
So they kind of - have carriers.
Frigates and Walrus class Subs. Oh, and the US Navy via NATO.
But they wouldn't need them...
the venezuelan navys bigger ships are a submarines 1 Week job (if it's a 688 or virgina class probably less)
Sounds like a soccer match....
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well, we'll just have to see what we can do....how many KIA on each side would make you happy?
Yes, the NATO link is key.
That, and I like to think we'd be quick to take advantage of a provocation by Hugo, of this nature.
