SoCal Islamic school ordered to pay $1.7 million in legal fees (Muslim woman discriminated against)

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) - The Islamic Society of Orange County and two of its officials must pay more than $1.7 million to lawyers for a woman who successfully sued the organization for discrimination, a judge has ruled.

Zakiyyah Muhammad, a 60-year-old black woman who converted to Islam, served for five years as principal of the Orange Crescent School in Garden Grove before she was fired in 2003. The school is operated by the Islamic Society.

An Orange County Superior Court jury awarded her $788,000 in damages last September after she claimed she was dismissed for challenging her male bosses and that the school board denied her a grievance hearing because she's a Muslim woman.

Now, Superior Court Judge Corey S. Cramin has ordered the society to pay Muhammad's legal and expert witness fees. Cramin said he based the award partly on the "exceptional competence exhibited at trial" by Muhammad's lead attorney, Ed Conner, who argued that his client was fired because of a culture clash between black and immigrant Muslims.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Society on Monday sued its insurer, the Chubb Insurance Group, alleging the company should have accepted a proposed $900,000 settlement of Muhammad's suit, which included attorneys fees.

Chubb has told the society that it must pay the total awards of nearly $2.5 million because its $1 million insurance policy was consumed by attorneys fees at trial.

"We're saying, 'Hey wait. You should've settled this for us. Instead, you forced us into a lawsuit we didn't want,'" said Jordan Stanzler, the Islamic Society's attorney in the new case.

Chubb officials declined to comment, saying they were unaware of the suit.

The Islamic Society also is appealing the jury verdict, Conner said.

Interesting. This could be the poison pill for islam in America. The muslims have beaten their own followers down in the middle east. But here in America they have to deal with converts, (generally black Americans), who won't take the muslims garbage as passively.
Something worth watching.

Nice to see some personal liability.

Event though the other post this was also neutered, this one is even more neutered. Culture-clash my @ss. The other article pointed out that 'immigrant' muslims treat women like trash.

They will claim 'sharia law' and of course they will get a pass.

That's really kind of funny under the circumstances..but legal costs sure are out of hand in this country.

Catholic institutions might have reason to be concerned here.

"challenging her male bosses"

Im sorry, but you can disagree with me as the boss, but the quickest way to the hiway is to challenge me.

Whe you disagree with me, and you are right, you get all the kudos.

When you disagree, and after I make the decision, you challenge me, that is when there are no kudos and the fur flies. However, you do have the right to say "I told you so"........Bob

If you read the article you get the impression that the school authorities are, as typical, in the "everybody's fault but ours" mode.

Ouch. Islamic misogyny, meet the trial lawyers' bar. One of the great irresistible-forces vs. immovable-objects clashes of all time.

I've got to send this to a friend who is insured by Chubb to let him know that his insurance rates are going to increase quite a bit.

They were trying to supplant US standards with Muslim standards, and within their own subculture they were shot down by American jurisprudence. Then they proceed to whine. Hope this good precedent is only the beginning.

Bet their premiums will go sky high or more than likely they will have a hard time finding any insurance at all.Insurance was sleeping on that one for sure.I have the 'pleasure'of dealing with many insurance companies and it is incredulous the stuff they try to save a buck.I could write a book about my experiences, but people would think it was non fiction!

Not at all. You can't have someone say "I want $900,000" and then just hand them a check. Make them prove it to a judge and jury.

Yes, the beginning of an increasing exodus of Muslims from the United States back to the stinking ratholes they came from. The sooner the better.

"Most non-converts think that they can't be good Muslims' while also being free Americans."

And that would certainly seem to be the case.
