The H5N1 strain of bird flu has been confirmed in a cat in Germany, the first time it has been positively identified in the country in an animal other than a bird, a national laboratory said today.
The cat was found on the northern island of Ruegen, where most of Germanys more-than 100 cases of H5N1-infected wild birds have been found, the Friedrich Loeffler institute said.
No other details were immediately available.

Did they find the cat dead? After it ate a bird?? Did it die of bird flu, or just test positive because it had eaten a bird?
Sounds like a cat hater.

Kitty should have made sure the bird he ate was fully cooked.

Rather than attempt to actually answer any of your questions, I'll just cheat and use the last line of the article.

How do you recommend we deal with rodent infestations?

Through his attorney, the cat announced that he had no comment on how he became exposed to the bird flu.

Yes indeed. You were prescient, Kelly.
One final point to make Judith, keep an eye on sentinel species. In fact H5N1 is acquiring mammalian polymorphisms this is seen in tigers, (Vietnam) mice etc. The adaption to human will not come via humans IMO but rather through alternative mammalian hosts.
I remember months ago, the Thai tigers dying at the zoo, after being fed infected chickens...as I recall, though, not every tiger that got sick at the chickens. I wondered then about tiger-to-tiger infection...

Quit dropping food crumbs off the dinner table. Keep the doors closed, not wide open like they do in Alabama, and get some potion pellets and traps.
Keeping an animal more disgusting than its prey is fundamentally dumb.
