House lawmakers scuttled a bill that would have required public school students to be told that evolution is not empirically proven - the latest setback for critics of evolution.
The bill's sponsor, Republican state Sen. Chris Buttars, had said it was time to rein in teachers who were teaching that man descended from apes and rattling the faith of students. The Senate earlier passed the measure 16-12.
But the bill failed in the House on a 28-46 vote Monday. The bill would have required teachers to tell students that evolution is not a fact and the state doesn't endorse the theory.
Rep. Scott Wyatt, a Republican, said he feared passing the bill would force the state to then address hundreds of other scientific theories - "from Quantum physics to Freud" - in the same manner.
"I would leave you with two questions," Wyatt said. "If we decide to weigh in on this part, are we going to begin weighing in on all the others and are we the correct body to do that?"
Buttars said he didn't believe the defeat means that most House members think Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is correct.
"I don't believe that anybody in there really wants their kids to be taught that their great-grandfather was an ape," Buttars said.
The vote represents the latest loss for critics of evolution. In December, a federal judge barred the school system in Dover, Pa., from teaching intelligent design alongside evolution in high school biology classes.
Also last year, a federal judge ordered the school system in suburban Atlanta's Cobb County to remove from biology textbooks stickers that called evolution a theory, not a fact.
Earlier this year, a rural California school district canceled an elective philosophy course on intelligent design and agreed never to promote the topic in class again.
But critics of evolution got a boost in Kansas in November when the state Board of Education adopted new science teaching standards that treat evolution as a flawed theory, defying the view of science groups.
Need a better answer on this, I realize, as I cited the volume change as a doubling. I used a figure from my 1988 Encyclopedia Brittanica. You can Google up a current estimate with "hydrosphere."
And if I get banned, I have had my say...I am here, and I am quite angry...
If they have lawyers in their families they might file a shark's kin suit.
They wrote the books.
"They wrote the books."
Allegedly.

I think Amishdude is a sitting on the fence evo/creo mathematician? No offense amishdude.
(OK, beer game is over and I still don't know what it is. I think it is just inventory management. Ever watch the game?)
The Grand Master isn't in the business of answering prayers. He does, however, prefer that we stifle our understandable urges to expound on the faults of our opponents.
now 666. For several reasons, now I'm quite speechless.
Only if you don't know anything.
I knew who the real scold was as I had engaged in some disgusting interchanges with the old fart...
Well, you know, all interchanges with the 'old fart' are disgusting.
As are all of the interchanges with this recently recurring cast of creationist trolls who are apparently frustrated over the demise of ID. But of course, ID isn't about religion :).
Indeed...I already made it known to the moderator, that this post was meant to be a private Freepmail, and that I accidentally hit the wrong button...I deserve banning, thats for sure, and I expect it...
It's common courtesty to ping the person you are maligning. If you don't want to ping him, please don't discuss him.
BTW zeeba, "mental midget" and "complete nitwit" puts you into the lead. I don't think I can continue to compete with the insults you've been getting. Congratulations. You're awesome!
Here's my whacko theory--maybe God beamed all of the water from sources in the solar system (Mars, Titan, etc.) in order to flood the earth and kill everyone, and then he beamed it back to whence it came.
Prove it didn't happen!
Kind of silly, hmm?
This may seem odd but I virtually never watch TV. Not bragging, just get bored too easily. Somehow it always seemed very slow, sports, news, shows... Don't know why. I may have a bit of ADD, adult version.
You can hit the abuse button for that post, explain that it's yours, posted in error, and request that it be deleted.
Nobody is forcing you to read them or believe them. OTOH, the public schools are forcing my children to read and believe evolution.
Ahem, as I explained to the moderator, this was intended to be a private reply...this was already explained to the moderator, and Jim Robinson, as this post was never to be public, but rather private...I admit, I flew off the handle, got carried away, and deserve banning...
See there, I can admit when I had done something wrong, and I do not blame anyone else...I can own up to my own mistakes...and just have...I have been called many awful things, without being pinged, and never said a word...that does not excuse what I did, its just a part of past history...
I have apologize to the moderators, and Jim Robinson, and explained it to them...its in their hands, I accept their decision, and will not moan about it...
Thanks...
