CBS News Poll: Bush Ratings At All-Time Low
CBS News ^ | 2/27/2006 | CBS/AP

(CBS) The latest CBS News poll finds President Bush's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 34 percent, while pessimism about the Iraq war has risen to a new high.

Americans are also overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush-backed deal giving a Dubai-owned company operational control over six major U.S. ports. Seven in 10 Americans, including 58 percent of Republicans, say they're opposed to the agreement.

CBS News senior White House correspondent Jim Axelrod reports that now it turns out the Coast Guard had concerns about the ports deal, a disclosure that is no doubt troubling to a president who assured Americans there was no security risk from the deal.

The troubling results for the Bush administration come amid reminders about the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and negative assessments of how the government and the president have handled it for six months.

In a separate poll, two out of three Americans said they do not think President Bush has responded adequately to the needs of Katrina victims. Only 32 percent approve of the way President Bush is responding to those needs, a drop of 12 points from last September’s poll, taken just two weeks after the storm made landfall.

Mr. Bush's overall job rating has fallen to 34 percent, down from 42 percent last month. Fifty-nine percent disapprove of the job the president is doing.

For the first time in this poll, most Americans say the president does not care much about people like themselves. Fifty-one percent now think he doesn't care, compared to 47 percent last fall.

Just 30 percent approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the Iraq war, another all-time low.

By two to one, the poll finds Americans think U.S. efforts to bring stability to Iraq are going badly – the worst assessment yet of progress in Iraq.

Even on fighting terrorism, which has long been a strong suit for Mr. Bush, his ratings dropped lower than ever. Half of Americans say they disapprove of how he's handling the war on terror, while 43 percent approve.

In a bright spot for the administration, most Americans appeared to have heard enough about Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident.

More then three in four said it was understandable that the accident had occurred and two-thirds said the media had spent too much time covering the story.

Still, the incident appears to have made the public's already negative view of Cheney a more so. Just 18 percent said they had a favorable view of the vice president, down from 23 percent in January.

Americans were evenly split on whether or not Cheney's explanation of why there was a delay in reporting the accident was satisfactory.

You need to believe it because they polled 1080 adults where 40% are democrats, 35% are independents, and only 25% are Republicans.

From freeper frankjr regaring the lastest CBS fake (as usual) poll:

This poll is not even close to being reasonable in the sample selection:

UNWEIGHTED Total Respondents 1018

Total Republicans 272 27%

Total Democrats 409 40%

Total Independents 337 33%

WEIGHTED

Total Respondents 1018

Total Republicans 289 28%

Total Democrats 381 37%

Total Independents 348 34%

In the Nov. 2004 election, the split was even between Dems and Repubs. This poll gives the Dems a 32% advantage (based on 28% Repub and 37% Dem of Total Pop).

As long as the Dems keep believing these faulty polls they will continue to be disappointed on election day.

No arument from me.

The point was that unless his results are clearly and unambiguously positive, historians won't be kind to him and his presidency.

My memory of the 1970s, unlike yours, is better than excellent!

PRESIDENT BUSH IS NOT EVER GOING TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT EVER AGAIN!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...Carter: gas lines, "malaise", fireside chats in a sweater, aiding the ouster of the Shah and helping the fanatic mullahs to rake over Iran, 400 odd days of Americans held prisoner, botched/failed rescue raid, gigantic interest rates, falling markets, rising unemployment, recession...............................

Gee, what similarities there are between Carter and President Bush.......................NOT!

I can't see this deal going through. If the overwhelming majority of the American people are against, and if it still goes through, there's something more here going on they we are privy too.

Are we not lemmings following the leader off the edge of the cliff? I step aside and let Dickie boy go over! I see far too much of the kool aid drinking and hooray for globalism!

Where are the real conservatives?

Can we not balance the budget?

Do we have to cow-tow to foreign governments because of indebtedness?

Have we no nerve to stand up to China? We are the super power militarily and yet we act like the street whore or the dog that been beat to much when it comes to trade and economics! Should our children and grandchildren look forward to careers at Walmarts even if they college degrees? I hope the low ratings for the president wake up this Grand Old Party! God Bless Reagan and Goldwater!

Your overwhelming majority is shifting. People with a real interest in the issue are looking at the facts and changing their initial opinion. Many of the rest won't even remember what this was about in two weeks.

By then you folks will be pushing some other fabricated crisis.

I never said he didn't care about his credibility. He simply doesn't rely on polls as a barometer of that. I won't either.

Other than the lousy PR that plagues this WH, I see nothing that he's done to damage his credibility regarding the ports deal. And I hear no concerns about that in the people I talk politics to.

What gets me is there isn't any pretense anymore. These people are blatant supporters of the Democrat party.

I listen to them ocassionally when I drive as it is about the only station I can get clearly.

OH NO! Now W will never get re-elected!

You bushbots have been repeating that stupidness all night. I guess to inferior minds it sounds funny.

There are a lot of Republicans for whom Bush's coattails will be an anchor that will sink them this November. With the Dubai ports deal I think whatever chance Santorum had evaporated.

The Democrats could run Mickey Mouse for president and the MSM would make a strong case for him.

Historians won't be kind to him and his presidency anyway – since most historians are liberals.

"You bushbots have been..."

Bushbot: anyone who can't think of six new reasons to hate President Bush by noon each day.

Real Conservative: someone who can.

True Conservative: someone who can AND was one of the eight people who bought the collected works of pat buchanan

He initially said he would veto any attempt to block the port deal.

In short order it became clear he didn't know much about it.

Well if he didn't know much about it, why threaten the veto like that?

Credibility: sunk.

What would the opinion of Iraq be if the media would publish half of what the Soldiers on the ground want to say?

I've seen some of the troops return from a deployment and go through a "culture shock" when they hear what the media is saying.

It's not exactly fun and games but it is not what the media is force feeding the public.
