Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

Since Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is # 2 in the line of presidential succession, doesn't he automatically move up to V.P.?

No. Under the 25th Amendment, the President can appoint a new Vice President, subject to Senate confirmation. That's how Gerald Ford became Vice President when Agnew resigned.

If the white house didnt know about the shooting for 18 hours, someone MUST have been drunk. Pick your end of the communication stream.

It just doesn't fly. It dont walk like a duck, or smell like a duck. It smells like duck poo.

Actually this is the ONLY appointment that requires approval from BOTH sides of the Congress--not just the Senate.

IF there is any truth to this, my respect for George W Bush would be extremely decreased.

Uh, how can you be dropped as a political liability AFTER the last election President Bush will ever face in office? What would be the point? The conservative base would be totally demoralized going into 2008.

"Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush."

Political liability, how??? The President is not running for re-election. It's a hit piece on Cheney pure and simple. MSM still sore over the hunting incident and finding a way to get back at Cheney.

"envision"

I "envision" Eva Mendes falling in love with me . . . but it doesn't mean it has any chance of happening in the real world.

Sounds like Drudge hopped on a non-story.

And you know this how?

Look at this claim:

The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

The White House knew of the incident that evening - that much is clearly documented. Insight is getting very sloppy lately.

Anyone GWB were to appoint as VP probably would be filibustered by the Dems anyway so Cheney might as well stay put.
