Cheney seen retiring after midterm elections (Drudge Siren)

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

Just got to your post as I read through the thread. Cheney being a "hate magnet" was a phrase never used until Peggy Noonan wrote her slimy article. If you are taking your political information from her, I suggest you get another source.

Three of the nine members of the Civil Rights Commission are appointed by the House too.

Where are you digging this up?..... there are only eight members, four of whom are appointed by the President and four by the Congress. They rotate between the President and Congress as they come up. The Congress rotates their appointments by branch every other time their turn comes up. The President also designates the Chair and Vice Chair subject to approval by the members.

You are right, deport. I was relying on faulty memory. Does the House name 2 members and the Senate two, or is it four for both houses to approve?

The United States Commission on Civil Rights is composed of eight Commissioners: four appointed by the President and four by Congress. Not more than four members shall at any one time be of the same political party.

The President also designates the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson from among the Commission's members with the concurrence of a majority of the Commission's members.

The Commissioners serve 6-year terms. No Senate confirmation is required. The President may remove a member of the Commission only for neglect of duty or malfeasance in office.

And this silly stuff doesn't have one named source in the entire piece. Not one! They've created a non-news story without any basis in fact.

Oh, they use an unrelated George Allen quote from a FOXNEWS Sunday Show from a few weeks back, that has nothing to do with the subject of this article, but no named quotes on any of the wild speculation this article tries to sell.

Well, I would dearly love to see Condi in the slot but she apparently really doesn't want the job. That's not unreasonable, no President or Vice President ever has a private life again.

But oh, the Democrats would writhe!

The worst thing Bush could do is appoint Condi (a baby killer) to the position, you had better hope he doesn't.

My understanding is that the turns are alternated, President-Congress. When it's the congress turn they alternate House/Senate. I can't remember the details now without looking them up but Daschle had a pick back early on when he was ML in the Senate.

I haven't read the legislation setting up the appointment process in a very long time so don't take all my comments as gospel.

The press would never have trouble helping the dims with anything. But it's irrelevant anyway, as Cheney isn't going anywhere.

I guess I did get the phrase from her article, but I can see what she was saying. Again, I like Cheney. I think this country is MUCH better off for having had him in office all this time. I think most people on the right like him. I don't want to see him step down unless he darn well wants to...and I'd rather just not see him step down.

BUT, I think it's clear that people on the left hate Cheney every bit as much as we hate Hillary. That has always been clear.

I also stick to my other point, which is that the man is in questionable health and we're talking about the most stressful job in the country. Yes, he has a lot of power and influence now, but he's not the big guy. It would be a MUCH bigger deal to lose a President due to health problems than a VP.

I LIKE Cheney and would have a hard time voting for him for President in a primary because of his heart problems. In the general election, I'd vote for him in a heart-beat.

So is this retirement like the pre-'02 elections Cheney retirement, pre-'04 elections Cheney retirement, or post-'04 elections retirement? I can't keep track of 'em all!

I know, and I didn't get the memo whether this is to set up Rudy, Frist, mcCain or Condi. How are we supposed to know what to say if they don't get us the memo in time. Just another sign of the chaos and incompetence inside the WH.
