Cheney seen retiring after midterm elections (Drudge Siren)

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

"I don't think anybody should be releasing classified information, period, whether in the Congress, executive branch or some underling in some bureaucracy," said Sen. George Allen, Virginia Republican.

SHUT YOUR MOUTH, Allen! What are you trying to do???????

I think he's about as likely as Hillary to run in 2008 (for some of the same reasons). The man's in questionable health and I'm sure that's not getting better with age. He's been a hate magnet ever since they've been in office. He's said he's not gonna run.

The man is rich and he's old. I'm VERY glad he's been in there these last few years, but I have a hard time seeing him wanting to mess with a Presidential run. Why should he put up with that crap? Given the pure hate he attracted as a VP, it's safe to be that campaign would be a bloodbath.

"Imagine, White Liberal Elitist lining up in lock step to vote against a qualified Black Woman!"

Qualified? Just what makes her qualified? Surely not the Hamas victory. Where does she stand on the issues of the day? Is she a pro abortion, pro gay gun grabber like Guiliani? I'm not ready to anoint her until I know where she stands on the issues.

I LOVE CHENEY!

(Sorry for shouting. I get emotional about this man, and I am so sick of the baseless attacks on him.)

We've heard this talk since he was tapped for the running mate spot. I guess it makes sense to set up an apparent successor but it will also alienate a lot of primary voters who would like to think they have a say in who the nominee will be (although we realistically don't).

I think their source for this is Scooter Libby. ("Now whatever you do, keep this secret, but I heard that . . . . ")

Dick Cheney was elected to the office of VP, and we deserve to get the whole four years

Agreed. Barring illness, his own or in the close family, he should stay on the full term.

The confirmation hearings of a successor would be quite a spectacle, wouldn't they? Dem heads bursting in air. Anybody with a shred of appeal as a presidential candidate in '08, would be given the full torches-and-pitchforks treatment.

My favorite was the he was going to fake a heart attack so he could cleanly step down and Bush could pick someone who could help him win in '04, and then be in place to run in '08. Washington needs something else to talk about. Can't we get a war going or something to focus on?

If Bush uses this opportunity to try and select his successor, my immediate reaction will be to fight like hell against the new VP. I want the GOP's next nominee to bubble up through the primary process.

One reason this seems unlikely: Imagine the Senate confirmation hearings for Bush's VP nominee. The Democrats would turn it into a circus, especially if it looked like Bush's choice could be the Republican presidential nominee in 2008. Bush would be handing his political enemies a high-profile opportunity to drag the administration and the unlucky nominee through the mud.

Unless Cheney absolutely can't continue as VP, there's no advantage in replacing him this way.

Because the Situation Room and Andrew Card knew there was a shooting right away - after some confusion, the President was, in fact, told Cheney was the shooter that evening.
